"I was angry because a female Doctor made no sense. I mean, how am I supposed to connect emotionally to a non-male character?" said longtime fan Curtis Mayflower. "But with this change, the belligerent creatures who display inexplicable fear of and rage towards the Doctor are now strangely relatable."

Maybe I'm on the wrong internet, but I haven't seen any outrage over this. But I'm seeing plenty of people outraged over the "outrage" assuming it actually exists.

My only gripe is I wish they considered Haley Atwell. But this lady will do fine, and I look forward to the new season. Especially without Moffat.

There was one? I looked in the Entertainment tab about when they announced the new Doctor, and didn't see anything. Then tried the Geek tab. Then tried the main tab. Then got caught up in Game of Thrones threads.

Yeah, the vast majority of fans seem somewhere between excited celebration and "let's see how they pull it off" guarded optimism.

There's the occasionally weird MRA/alt-right troll nonsense, spouting the standard "political correctness gone mad" drivel, but they do that any time a woman appears in public without her red cloak and white bonnet on. No worse than usual.

2017-07-17 08:19:10 AM
For 50 years it's been the same thing.

"Oh, the Doctor is going to change! This is gonna suck! He'll never be as good as the other one! He's too old. He's too young. He's too goofy. He's too similar to the last one. It's too much of a departure."

And then the first episode comes out and it's "I guess I'll give the new Doctor a chance. Oh, this person is pretty good. I don't know if they're my FAVORITE Doctor, but the portrayal is enjoyable! WOW, I didn't see THAT coming. Still prefer a previous one, but this okay. This Doctor is GREAT, but the showrunners don't know how to use them."

Every goddamn time.

If you like Doctor Who, give it a chance. Predicting doom for the series because of a casting announcement is ludicrous.

Just read that thread.

It wasn't outrage.  It was ONE POSTER saying the most stupid shiat he could think of, and farkers falling all over themselves to respond.

Like this.  This is bait, ok?  You don't need to respond to it.  The poster isn't looking for a discussion, or interested in talking about the subject.  They just want to make you upset and count the green arrows, because it mimics the feelings of friendship and respect they otherwise lack.  Just let it go.  There's even a handy little button over there in the top right corner.  I guarantee that you will never miss being enlightened or educated by this person, so go ahead and use it.

If you judge it from about 4 seconds of screen-time that tells us literally nothing other than what the character is going to look like...yes?

I just wish they didn't make the announcement so public. It would have been an awesome surprise to see it happen while watching the new Doctor Who episode. But the BBC needs to make its money which means hyping up the next season and the only way to do that is to let everyone know who the next doctor is.

Well, given that to watch a Dr. Who, you pretty much have to switch off your brain and just believe whatever nonsense the Doctor says (even when he's lying), Then no matter who says "I'm the Doctor" you have to believe it.

Given that, you could cast *anyone* including Don Knots, Samuel L. Jackson, or a very large slug with a voiceover by Helen Mirran as "The Doctor."

Once she reads whatever claptrap the writers came up with about why she's a sentient slug with the voice of a 65 year old woman, then we could get on with the special effects, and the poignient story about love and death, roll credits.

We had an episode on in the background after a family dinner a few months back (start of the new series ?) and at one point Capaldi referred to the TARDIS having a cloaking device.

My brother, early forties, probably hasn't been a regular viewer since Peter Davison was the doctor, suddenly looks up and says "the TARDIS' doesn't have a cloaking device, it's got a chameleon circuit".

If they're going to keep raiding the earlier series for ideas then they really should pay more attention to stuff like that.
