I have HBO but I don't watch it live, so no. I like to watch TV in the dark, and it's summertime in the Pacific NW. I'll watch it when it's good and black outside.

No.  We'll all watch the Simpsons last episode.

Still don't get all the hoopla about GoT. It's a decent show, I've watched the first 4 seasons over the span of a whole year....it's not OMG I HAVE TO WATCH TV, so I am not in a hurry to watch the 5th and 6th or 7th.

There will be other shows that have an audience similar to what GoT has. At one of the last places I consulted people couldn't wait to talk about The Walking Dead the day after an episode, so it's not like GoT even has a monopoly on that right now.

/dnrta so hopefully that's what they were referring to

Huge fantasy fan and the first you learned of it was the TV show? The books were huge in fantasy circles long before the TV show was even a concept.

How about "No"?

There will be more shows that get tens of millions of viewers and penetrate the general discussions.

Also when they are discussing viewship there are two key points:

1) HBO has limited subscribers compared to NBC. Game of Thrones would get millions more viewers of it were on one of the big four networks (ignoring the fact that they would never air it or put up the money to make it).
2) Relatively few people would watch a show outside the official channels in the mid 1990s. Sure a few people would record something and pass around a VHS, and a few would download it but it wouldn't be a significant number. When HBO is reporting 25 million viewers, that will include those watching various airings on HBO, getting it from their streaming service and other legitimate channels. It will not include those that download or stream via illegitimate means. And that will also number into the millions.

Yes, the numbers viewing the most popular shows are likely reduced, but not as much as hose numbers show. Now anything other than the most popular shows, those that penetrate the general discussion, are down a lot more.

Hell, the article references Stranger Things, we will see what happens with that when season two comes out.

Between HBO, YouTube and Facebook Live, "Last Week Tonight" gets anywhere from 10 to 30 million viewers. And apparently its ratings keep going up each season.

The books/show is essentially all the juiciest parts of early to late medieval history mashed up with dragons and magic sprinkled on top.
If you like reading history, there's a lot of interesting fantasy-steeped takes on things like the wars of scottish independence, the war of the roses, etc.

Rubbish. The books were mediocre. The boobs, incest and violence sold it on screen.

There is far superior fiction out there but it will never make it to screen because the audience is not exactly geared for it. ie, mouth-breathers not think good.

Same reasons that Expanse rubbish is all the rage...  some of the worst fiction I was ever exposed to and folk just can't shut up about it...

It's the only show I feel compelled to watch live: not only can I freak the hell out with my GoT-loving coworkers the day after it airs, but it is a pain in the arse to dodge spoilers all over social media any time after the live showing.

I think this show is the last of that kind of viewing. It started before the ubiquity of streaming, and is of a quality that very few outlets would even want to pay for anymore.

2017-07-17 06:27:40 AM
The only argument I can see in favor of "No More Shred TV Experiences" is that more and more premium content will be viewed timeshifted.  Just look at how Netflix shows are released.  Some people go through the entire season in a weekend, some people might sit and watch an episode a week.  It becomes difficult to have an open discussion when not everyone is on the same page.

Oh please no, I can see a lengthy post coming about Horton Hears a Who and why HBO will never have the balls to turn it into a 8 season series.

/cannot wait for George R R Martin's adaptation of Green Eggs and Ham which not only will be seventeen hundred pages long describing the eggs and ham but what happens to poor Sam at the end would make Lemony Snickett shudder.

There arent many "Good" guys to begin with.  There are main characters, some of whom we grow accustomed to, but they're not necessarily good people.

It's actually one of the plot points:  If you play the game of thrones, you have to play to win.   And that usually means a certain number of shady things.  Being "good" is even a disadvantage, usually fatal.

I must admit, the bad guys winning part has a lot less appeal for me now, ever since it started happening for real last November.

If all of the good guys were killed nobody would still be watching. Instead, it was one of the most anxiously awaited season openers of the season. This should tell you something. Yes, there is gore and boobs. There is some of the most intense, emotionally wrenching television you'll ever see. Scenes that might make a grown man cry, want to barf or strangle someone. Unfortunately it's probably too late for you to start at this point. Story lines that began in the very first episode are just starting to come together now. You would need to binge watch all 60 previous episodes and take copious notes to even begin to grasp the plotlines at this point. It helps a lot to read at least the first 3 books just to get all the characters sorted out.

2017-07-17 11:38:32 AM
Unfortunately I read the books and never got into the TV show. I may have to now since Martin is never going to finish it.

My roommates and I did throw a viewing party for the opener last night. We had tons of great food with semi-funny names and tons of meads and the Ommegang beers. I still have a headache!

The books started well but got progressively worse. All the action is off the page which lets the TV show producers make the scenes fit the TV medium. Contrast this Abercrombie's first law trilogy. The action is rather detailed with a lot if internal thoughts. It would be a lot harder to recreate.

No, it's not going to be the last shared TV show.    But the article seems to miss the point of what makes this particular show special to the people who watch it, namely that it very quickly established the involved personas, and more importantly, had little trouble in showing the 'bad guys' winning on a pretty regular basis.

Few tv shows do that, few tv shows make people yell at the screen in quite the same way, to the point where you almost want to just say "fark it" and stop watching, but of course that doesn't happen.

And while there are shows with equally good writing, and better acting, nothing else has the unique combination of everything that GoT has.

I'm also hard pressed to believe that the viewership numbers are that low, taking pirated viewing into account.
