Who is the 13th Doctor?

Gotta be Nurse Who, though. Ladies can't be doctors.

So, you didn't understand that storyline then - the point is that they never meet again as the doctor ages, which is what made it poignant. Rover can never meet 13.

I thought I heard a million fanboys cry out in disgust. Looks like it will be an interesting shift for the plot lines.

I look forward to a couple of weeks of delicious internet shiat-flinging.

To no avail though, after all The Doctor is an expert at dealing with ineffective whining cybermen.

Yes.

The "true fans" are already writing Doctor Who's obituary---not to say its death warrant.

Which they do every goddamn time there's a new Doctor, but now they're doing it with sexism. I'm tired of the inevitable fan-whinging in the first place, but this just makes me want to throw some bricks through people's faceholes.

That's cool. I guess I'll have to wait for 14 for her to become a pony. :/

Their name is Doctor Who.  Missy confirmed it.

It would be very cool to pick a woman in the next doctor too just to see the world in flames

2017-07-16 12:11:31 PM
Yep. TV show about a main character that does and is regenerated into a new body, travels through time in a phone box, grew back a hand that was cut off by use of some "latent regeneration energy", and has a bisexual immortal who will sleep with almost anyone and ends up being a giant head in a fish tank.

But THE WORLD IS ENDING because the doctor regenerated looking like a female instead of a male. (Do gallifreyans even have standard binary genders? I don't even know.)

2017-07-16 12:11:45 PM
Personally I am pleased that there will be a female Doctor in my lifetime.

IT'S ABOUT F*CKING TIME!

2017-07-16 12:12:41 PM
A time travelling alien that lives for thousands of years and "dies" by being reborn into a new body, sure.
But a woman? Cue the outrage!

Already seeing "But what about Wonder Woman, or James Bond" idiots like that's a valid argument

2017-07-16 12:12:51 PM
maybe with a woman they can bring something new to the character rather than 'oh hes older now!' or 'hes a wacky millennial!'.  only so much change they could do lately.   but maybe that was more a moffat issue

not surprised chibnall brought in someone from broadchurch

2017-07-16 12:13:17 PM
Is Doctor Who like Game of thrones? If so, they could incorporate a lot of pegging scenes.

No reason why they can't trot out a herm or neuter Time Lord.

hopefully having had missy will help abate the nerd rage.

not likely

As a life-long Wholigan who used to catch the show out of Canada in Western NY from Pertwee on, this was always a possibility. The Doctor having a different sex doesn't bother me; the endless crap episodes that rivaled the Colin Baker years is what killed it for me. Let the Doctor be a Zebra for all I care, just get better writers!!

Moffatt is out too. The Broadchurch showrunner is taking over. That's a good thing (and probably how Whittaker got the job.).

All in all, I say... GOOD!

2017-07-16 12:15:28 PM
Weird, I just got through watching all three seasons of Broadchurch with her and David Tennant just a couple days ago. She's a good actress and easy on the eyes, I'm sure she'll be great.

Thing is, a female doctor was being mooted as early as the Eighties. I'm mostly surprised they actually did it.

Then again, it's rarely appreciated how conservative a TV institution DW is.

Even Rose Tyler came as something of a surprise. All previous female companions were middle-class women with RP accents. An Eastender? Maybe on Eastenders where the gentry could look down on them, but not DW.

So if they're finally going for it, it's probably well past time.

Well, the Moffatroll is gone, so the writing should improve.

Stage one is going to be epic this go around.

Personally I'm more concerned with what Chris Chibnall will do to the series. Granted he worked on Torchwood and a handfull of Who episode so we got that going for us.

2017-07-16 12:20:08 PM
I haven't seen Broadchurch or anything else she's been in, so I can't comment on her acting ability.  I just hope she's able to bring the right balance of mania/gravitas to the role.

I still think Hayley Atwell would have been perfect, had she be interested in the role.

I have appreciated this last series with Capaldi where there is no attempt at romance between them.  People can work together, adventure together have fun together as friends with no romance involved.

Hopefully we avoid the special companions too.

Every new Doctor brings an opportunity to revitalize the franchise.  This is a welcome change that opens up new possibilities but, as always, it will come down to the show runner's ability to tell an interesting story.
