Will Smith as the Genie?

Basically, you're asking Will Smith to play Robin Williams.. and I can't imagine that.

it's almost as if a cgi-filled live-action remake of a cartoon might not be as good as the original and disney is just cashing in on brand recognition and revitalizing sales of dated merchandise

Interesting, since I thought that was the worse portrayal of Ali I have ever seen. And certainly one of the worse acting jobs Will Smith had ever done.

I had never seen Ali portrayed as being a slow, retarded, valium infused character before - and in his prime too. Weird.

Some of the best Hollywood films ever had people of the wrong ethnic or racial background playing central characters.  Of course, some of the worst did too....  and of the best, they were largely made 50 to 80 years ago

I think it was Foreman who noted that Ali was amazingly well-spoken, but wasn't particularly literate or well-educated. He was basically a newscaster. What he said sounded good, but he didn't understand all of it.

You do have to admit that it is just a tad weird that Hollywood seems to view Indian and Arab as interchangeable ethnicities. Kind of smacks of: "Eh, she's roughly the right shade, let's go with her."

On the other hand, playing a little fast and loose with the ethnicities did give us Ricardo Montalban as Khan, which was an iconic performance. Plus, you could sort of handwave it by having the Sultan make a reference to his wife being from a distant land (can't remember if Jasmine's mom was alive in the original).

Or that they always use Mexicans to play American Indians, or twenty-something women to play teenagers, or able bodied people to play handicapped, or make actors stand in a hole when they're next to Tom Cruise to hide that he's so short, or any number of other things along these lines. It's Hollywood, the land of make believe.

Yea, I mean it's acting. It shouldn't be imperative to match everything up. And i didn't see outrage over giancarlo, an Italian, taking a Hispanic's role in breaking bad, a genie's role in once upon a time, or a black role in that spike Lee joint.

The bigger issue isn't perfectly lining up various minorities, but perhaps better matching pay and respect with folks other than white males, no?

When you consider the story takes place in a fictional land called Agrabah, we really can't say the casting is "wrong" or "right" or that people from Agrabah aren't a totally unique race that cannot be fully and properly represented by any one group of people in the real world.

However, my problem is that Disney has shown a tendency of casting actors who cannot sing, and using Autotune to make them sound "better" -- Emma Watson is just flat-out HORRIBLE in Beauty and the Beast because she obviously couldn't sing, and they turned her voice into a robotic warble. I don't recall Will Smith being a good singer (and I REALLY hope the Genie doesn't rap, instead) so I'm thinking we're in for a heavily Autotuned Will Smith performance.

So they make a huge fuss about making sure Aladdin and Jasmine are cast ethnically correct, but then hire Tom Hardy to play Jafar?

I have found that I have an inexplicable weakness for gujarati hotties. It can, and has (repeatedly), gotten me into trouble.
One night, when I was early 30s and single, I got a text from a 18-19yr old ex-barista saying "I have my sister's ID. want to meet me at the bar?" She was in a college town 45 minutes away. I left work early.

Robin Williams wasn't much of a singer. He sold his songs through humor. I can see Will Smith doing something similar.

GungFu: just went down the wikipedia rabbit hole...I was curious about the origin of the Aladdin story.
In my childhood in the UK, the tale of Aladdin was a Chinese one, and they still have this reflected in pantomines Mickey Rooney would have been proud of.

Anyway, since we're on the race thing with Middle Eastern Will Smith and Aladdin, I had a look at Wiki and found that to my surprise that the tale does not originate from the land of sand dunes. In actuality, some French dude made it up and added it into a translation of the compiled stories from A Thousand and One Nights. The story of Aladdin comes from a distant land of baguettes, and onion carrying bicycle riders.

So Luc Besson should direct?
