Yeah, I love a song where you not only have to re-tune your guitar but in fact remove two strings entirely.  Fun tune anyway but yeah.

Came here to post this. Why this song didn't become legendary, I have no idea. I think it's beautiful in every way possible.

Saw them in '79 and again in the 90s. One of the best party music bands ever. I stood at Cindy Wilson's feet at the front of the stage as she sang, "Dance This Mess Around" in '79, her high heel on the monitor, hand on her hip. We made eye contact. She look at once vulnerable and punishing. I actually have Super 8 (out of focus) footage of the gig somewhere. An extraordinary band that expanded music by maturing what had previously been novelty tones. Another point; For a week or two in the 90s, B-52s and R.E.M. were the same band.

Michael Stipe looks like he bought his outfit off the sale rack from a Cross Colors store to seem urban and hip.

Kate has an amazing voice, but song is just terrible.  It was trying to reach out to the rave kid scene that was big at the time.

Even Stipe said this "Despite the song's success, band members were ambivalent about being known for a pop song that lacked gravitas. "It's a fruity pop song written for children. It just is what it is", Stipe told the BBC's Andrew Marr in 2016. "If there was one song that was sent into outer space to represent R.E.M. for the rest of time, I would not want it to be Shiny Happy People"."

And even on Space Ghost.

"In an interview with The Quietus, he said that he was a bit embarrassed when it became a big hit, but it's an important song because it shows a different side of him"
"The title and chorus are based on a Chinese propaganda poster. The slogan "Shiny happy people holding hands" is used ironically - the song was released in 1991, two years after the Tiananmen Square uprising"
