Dave and singe Russell Allen are also core members of Trans-Siberian Orchestra. This year is officially into nightmare territory for them.

Sounds like they didn't pull all the way off the road. A Trucker doesn't drive in the emergency lane. For fark sake waste the tire rim and drive on the rim until you can find a safe place to pull off on a ramp.
Because if you can't pull all the way off the road...you aren't going to be able to change a tire.

That's what I thought of as well.   Aside:   The surviving three were so young.   Baby-faced.

This is really sad.   AM lost their drummer as well a couple of years ago, dying on the tour bus.   So weird, I was just reading about it last night.

Self-driving trucks can't happen soon enough. This is just the truck driver tooling along with his head up his ass. Sadly, not uncommon.

This happened about 25 miles from my place. That seems to be a particularly dangerous stretch of interstate. Hope nobody else dies of their injuries.

Or maybe they did pull all the way off the road...

" ADRENALINE MOB bassist David Zablidowsky died and six others were injured when a tractor-trailer veered off Interstate 75 near Micanopy and struck the group's RV that had pulled off the highway with a flat tire. "

Lots of pictures here. Only one showing a portion of the skidmarks, and not enough to tell if the collision happened in the travel lane.

I drive through there fairly often for work. They've been re-paving I-75, but I think all that actual work has been at night. There's some construction north of there in Gainesville, but that's 15 miles away.

Some of that, too.  Adaptive cruise control/automatic braking and lane-departure warning are slowly coming on-line, but true autonomous driving needs more work.

My carrier is skeptical about much of those technologies. We carry high value and military loads and there are already incidents where trucks are rammed to force them to the side of the road to steal stuff. On loads governed by Freightwatch we even have special instructions to never pull over due to accident and have them negotiate a safe place to meet the police. Usually that is for cellphone loads.

The issue with these technologies is that if they override driver control, then they can get used to force the truck to slow and stop just by properly boxing them in. Theft of freight is rising, the DHS put out a warning to all carriers this spring about it. It's insane what risks some thieves will take. And usually they are working on insider knowledge so they know what trucks to target.

Yeah, I work for a pretty conservative company. We are just starting with the stuff. And yes, cargo thieves will steal anything.

I was a string player with TSO. I wasn't one of the "stars", just sat in the section, this was in the early years. Dave was super friendly and a fine musician. I had no idea he was so young. I'm probably the same age as the Savatage guys, so he was considerably younger. What a tragedy.

Our high school's current strings teacher, who a few of us whent to school with, is also an occasional violinist for when they come to the local venues. We've worked with her a couple of times, but not for a while. (In a TSO tribute band,  we did fundraiser gigs at the HS a while back.)

We like mocking Metallica in recent years, but Cliff's death completely changed everything for them.

Sounds like you do NOT know of the geographic reference provided by the article. This stretch of  I-75  is acknowledged by FDOT as one of the deadliest in the State. You DO remain correct that the best option is to keep moving and get completely off the road via exit ramp. Unfortunately this is not always possible.
