Who has had their civil rights stepped on? Is this reference to the Patriot Act, which has more built in safety features than any other federal investigation program? Get a clue. Can anyone name a single person who has had their "rights" violated under the Patriot Act?

2004-05-22 03:51:37 PM
Yeah, THE MAN asks for my ID at bars all the time. Abusin' my civil rights, baby!

2004-05-22 04:17:52 PM
Even though this seems to raise a few red flags to me, I can't see how this is much different than being required to show id while boarding an airplane. Call me when they start randomly id'ing people at stoplights.

2004-05-22 04:20:36 PM
Oh, the horror of having to reach in my pocket and produce my ID. I would feel so.....violated. What utter bastards.

2004-05-22 04:22:00 PM
Your papers, please!

2004-05-22 04:22:45 PM
Wow! The first five posts are in favor. I think I'll sit this one out.

2004-05-22 04:24:58 PM
What are the repercussions for not showing your ID?

MBTA stations are considered private property, so I would assume you would just be asked to leave.

2004-05-22 04:25:41 PM
Ihre Papiere, bitte!

2004-05-22 04:26:27 PM
Well shoot, if they are going to check my ID, they might as well tap my phone, bug my house, and why not, quarter a federal agent in my guest room.

Listen asshats, the point isn't "who has had their rights trampled?" The point is that they have the power to do so because of the patriot act. All who have power will abuse it eventually.

2004-05-22 04:26:35 PM
I agree will Diogenes.

2004-05-22 04:27:01 PM
Holy crap, I never thought I'd live in a country where "Papers, please" was not only DONE, but people...supported it. Well, this is how it happens, I guess. Guess I'll be moving ASAP.

2004-05-22 04:27:01 PM
Can anyone name a single person who has had their "rights" violated under the Patriot Act?

Why do we have to wait for abuses to happen before we ask our representatives to do something about it?

2004-05-22 04:27:04 PM
Happens already in continental Europe... soon to happen in Britain soon.

/I don't like where it will lead, but if it would only stop here I'm not that bothered.

2004-05-22 04:27:40 PM
SNAP! (sound of the rubber glove)
You know what comes next...

2004-05-22 04:28:01 PM
And shave off that mustache! Makes you look like you got something to hide.

2004-05-22 04:28:01 PM
Police: May I please see your ID?
Good Person: Sure, is my Drivers License OK?
Police: Thank you. That was fine. Have a nice day.

or...

Police: May I please see your ID?
Bad Person: Uh Oh....

If you have nothing to worry about, stop worrying.

2004-05-22 04:28:14 PM
MBTA stations are considered private property, so I would assume you would just be asked to leave.

Or handcuffed, and escorted to the nearest station and sat in a little tiny office till the cops come and get you; proccess you; and maybe release you, six hours later because you've left your wallet at home.

2004-05-22 04:28:26 PM
All who have power will abuse it eventually.

That about sums it up.

2004-05-22 04:28:28 PM
Quick1: Have you considered that perhaps the people who've had their rights violated are in cells unable to communicate with their families or lawyers, or have been deported? It's awfully hard to get them on fark to let you know their rights have been violated.

This is because the DNC's convention is going to be there in July. The Dems want this to happen to keep the delegates safe.

FLAME ON!

2004-05-22 04:29:10 PM
Only a terrorist would refuse to show their ID.

2004-05-22 04:29:29 PM
"About a year ago they admitted they were using training based on an Israeli security model of behavioral profiling or selection which they declined to either explain or to otherwise amplify what it means,"

Yeah, lets use an Israeli technique. No bombings or terrorist acts take place in Isreal.

2004-05-22 04:29:45 PM
Wow, Why not just card everyone at the door, and sell booze?

No ID = NO Admittance.

These "Random Checks" are retarded.

2004-05-22 04:30:13 PM
Stick a fork in it, democracy's dead.

2004-05-22 04:30:27 PM
Sturgeon:

Or, how about - Good person: Uh, crap, I forgot my wallet at home/it was stolen.
Police officer: You must be a bad person with something to hide!

And you know, a lot of people with outstanding warrants have them for dumb things like not having paid parking tickets. You really think that makes them a "bad person"?

2004-05-22 04:30:43 PM
Police: May I please see your ID?
Me: You have no reason to, so no.

2004-05-22 04:30:55 PM
If you have nothing to worry about, stop worrying.

So you're all for letting the police search your house whenever they want?

2004-05-22 04:30:57 PM
People whose rights have been violated under PATRIOT? How about holding indefinitely people defined as terrorists without legal recourse?

Wake up, America.

2004-05-22 04:31:43 PM
ImJustaTroll

That's a great idea. I've got the booze already. You stop random people to ID them,. and I can sell the alcohol. We'll split the profit.

2004-05-22 04:31:47 PM
It not just showing your id but having to be questioned about where you are going and coming from ect ect

2004-05-22 04:32:13 PM
Last October, State Police at Logan stopped Lylburn King Downing, the national coordinator of the American Civil Liberties Union's Campaign Against Racial Profiling -- and an African-American -- who was ordered out of the airport after he refused to answer an officer's questions during an identification check.

What an incredibly racist thing, to believe you're above standard security checks because of the color of your skin.

/flamebait

2004-05-22 04:32:44 PM
Some of you honestly do not care if police check your id for no apparent reason? WOWWY WOW WOW

2004-05-22 04:33:26 PM
T spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the State Police involved in the training were from Troop F at Logan International Airport, where such identification checks have been taking place since about a year after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

heh, F Troop...

If republicans have nothing to hide about they won't mind registering their guns in a national database.

Turnabout is fair play. Remember, Reps only have a few more months in power.

Hmm...a tad too ironic a thing to have happened without a little prompting IMHO.

Still, if I was the next guy in line I wouldn't have given the officer any info either. Stuff like this scares me - but then again, I said the same thing about DUI checkpoints in the 80's and nobody listened then. So I suppose nobody will listen now.

2004-05-22 04:34:45 PM
wonder if its worth the 30 bucks to get my name legally changed to Osama. fark it, i'm already a walking red flag to law enforcement as is....might as well go all the way.

2004-05-22 04:35:17 PM
This is a good thing because as everyone knows terrorists don't carry ID

2004-05-22 04:35:40 PM

A German police officer examines the identification papers of Jews in the Krakow ghetto, circa 1941.

It always starts out soooo innocently...

I love this country more and more each day ... its almost as if america is trying to breed terrorism and anti-american sentiment here at home ... this sucks . This is our mother land not some country we are waging war on , and controlling illegaly .. there is no reason to breed contempt , scorn , and hatred here too . Back off our civil rights let us focus on survivng and feeding our kids damn it ,we shouldnt have to worry about what the government is trying to take away from us next .
I want to work and make a decent wage . I want to take care of My family . I dont want to have to worry about about false returns , followed by national embaressment , detainment , and sexual abuse .
/ oops sorry these finger prints on the baggy ARENT yours after all .. your anus will quit bleeding soon ... heres your t-shirt have a good day ... Godbless america

Ironpoint, if you think the GOP only has a few more months, then you're smoking more crack than most leftists.

CadetHappy:
Get a clue. Can anyone name a single person who has had their "rights" violated under the Patriot Act?

The density of freedom-hating right-wingers never ceases to amaze. CH, the whole point is, you don't know if your rights have been violated. The FBI can now enter your house, look through your personal belongings, read your mail, and leave without having to tell you they were ever there. They do not need a warrant, nor probable cause (previously known as the Fourth Amendment), to do this. They now have the power to get your medical records, find out what books you have read at the library, look at your student records, and make it illegal for your doctor, librarian, or registrar to ever tell you it was done.

There's a term for people who support this kind of thing. They're called fascists. Don't join them, my friend.

2004-05-22 04:37:28 PM
By all means, let's just let the potential threats move as freely as is absolutely possible. Those b*tching have never had the responsibility to protect.

2004-05-22 04:37:29 PM
Well, CadetHappy, this isn't particular to patriot, but Jose Padilla.

Showing ID to take the train is, useless, annoying, and a waste of time, but it's not a HUGE deal.

When the govt can arrest a US citizen on US soil, and hold him for years without due process, access to a lawyer, etc., it's blatantly unconstitutional.

2004-05-22 04:37:55 PM
Ironpoint, My guns are registered, clean and loaded. I pray I never need to use them for self-defense. But, if I do, I don't miss.

2004-05-22 04:37:59 PM
And the best part is, because those gosh-darned Arabs look different from us and wear different clothes anyway, we won't even have to make them wear crescent-shaped patches on their clothes. See? We still love freedom.
