Yisroel and Rachel Merkin, 37 and 34, are suspected of improperly taking home $70,557,51

Well, giving huge tax cuts to the poor doesn't have much effect.

If you're rich, you'll get that much (and then some) from Trump and the Republicans if they have their way.  And it's all legal and above board.   The moral of this story is, if you really want to steal, join the Republican Party.

Because some people might abuse a system, we should take away that system.

Because some people might be imprisoned even though they're innocent, we should build more prisons.

I don't know if that's false equivalence or not, but it sure seems odd.

Chris Christie can tell you how much that is in nuggets.

The answer is always tax cuts and taking away poor people's health care. What was the question again?

Lakewood?  Let me guess....

Yep Ultra orthodox.  Fark them.  They're pulling the same thing here that that are in Israel.  Scammin the govt. and producing nothing of value.  Not even cannon fodder.

Between this, what they're doing in Rockland county, and thee sex abuse scandal, we really need to clean our own farking house.

I thought it was all due to Republican Jesus St Reagan. Is there a patron saint I am forgetting?

I wonder how much corruption a serious investigation of government contracts, business tax returns and big business kickbacks would uncover? Think anyone would dare to use it as an excuse to curtail giveaways to fat cats?

They've caught an astounding 6 couples who've scanned the system out of $400k!  Now tell me the man hours and all additional costs that went into catching these 6 couples.

Correct.

Also, Lakewood is Trumpier than Oklahoma. I think he carried that town by like 50 points.

Over what period of time?

/Checks article - ahh, about 4 years, so about $17k a year. Stop the presses! They caught the biggest scammer of all time!!!

Eliezer and Elkie Sorotzkin, Samuel and Esther Serhofer,Yisroel and Rachel Merkin, Jerome Menchel, 33, Mottel Friedman, Tzvi and Estee Braun, Moche and Nechama Hirschmann

The ultra orthodox are notorious welfare cheats.

Stories like this exist only to enrage Post readers. Only the dumbest among us (possibly Post readers) would suggest throwing the baby out with the bathwater just because someone, somewhere gamed the system.

I'd like to see similar outrage, from the same people, when they are forced to realize who's REALLY robbing them blind, and to what tune.

The Mafia, Bank Robbers, Oil Barrons did you leave that off the beginning of your sentence?

Since people who(m) made to much to get welfare scammed the system and got caught I guess this means we have to cut off real poor people from welfare and give tax cuts to the rich because reasons?

They arrested an additional six couples, bringing the total up to 26 arrested and $2.4 million in fraud.

So far.

I bet if you excluded the ultra-Orthodox vote it would be much closer. Nobody wins the ultra-Orthodox segment of a community by a mere 50 points. They vote consistently en bloc for whoever promises to look the other way while they commit welfare fraud streamline the benefits application process.

Naturally, Trump's voter-fraud investigators will look everywhere except where the fraud actually is.

JEWISH scammers, headline writer. Doing scams SPECIFICALLY because of their particular brand of Judaism.

Why would you omit that? It's important context

Some rich people commit crimes, so we should make sure there are no more rich people?

Reminds me of the HUD scam on the Sopranos. So Jewish mafia?

I wonder what their other income was? These guys on welfare don't work. They go to yeshiva and pray all day. That's usually it for their education unless they choose to learn English. Though the ages on the reports are beyond the educational years so I expect they WERE on welfare (legit no income) when they were in school and got greedy as soon as they got under the table jobs.

2017-07-07 12:46:52 PM
Um, don't mean to be racist or whatever, but reading the names and the fact that they're couples leads me to believe this is about the (apparently) well-known welfare fraud committed by the Orthodox Jewish families in the Yankee part of the U.S.

So I'm OK with it.

Like other reasonable people, I'm OK with investigating and prosecuting fraud of any kind, not just the kind supposedly committed by black welfare queens with a dozen kids. And obviously, there is still copious fraud out there, the suggestions that the "little" fraud committed by these people is not worth investigating sounds like the assholes yapping now about how we should stop talking about the tiny matter of Russia-directed hacking/influence/whatever of our voting infrastructure.

I live not far from Lakewood and have been following this story for over a week now.  Most of them *do* work, often multiple positions.  But the corruption runs so deep over there, everyone turns a blind eye.  Businesses pay under the table, money is openly laundered through a beeper store right on Main St., there are over 100 private schools for a total of 30K students, most apartment complexes are considered either school or synagogue property so don't pay taxes, the Lakewood school board is mostly Hasidic and they've directed the public school buses be used for private school kids (causing a $3M shortfall in the public school budget), and all affordable housing gets mysteriously condemned halfway through construction, only to be rebuilt into luxury condos 6 months later.

When this scandal first broke, it was reported that THOUSANDS of Lakewood residents were calling the local police to find out if there were arrest warrants on them, while another few hundred called the State Treasury & IRS to "update their income".  So, yeah--they're working.  They're just not reporting the income.
