I don't understand this. At all. But I understand very little these days.

2017-07-04 04:00:25 PM
people don't have faith in the media because they don't think the media is doing a good job of reporting on the stories that are important to them. I think few non-trumpers would claim that CNN is making up the news. But most non-trumpers know that Donnyboy is a prolific liar.

2017-07-04 04:02:32 PM
This makes complete sense. It is not that we trust CNN completely or even all alone, it's that compared to trump it's credible.

They are not entirely, or even mostly credible anymore. Once they decided that news and truth was all about perspective, and they should present all sides, they lost.

Who the hell are these guys polling?

(I know, I know. People who answer polls...)

A crap-ton of my family members are full-on Republican and were Trump-thumping hard during the election season. Now, not a word one and when I try to get anything out of them they proclaim to have voted for Gary Johnson.

After the polling debacle in '16, I'm not sure which ones to even pay attention to any more.

Keep in mind that "the media" includes FOX.

So 9% of self-described Democrats are liars, trolls or holdovers from before the Southern Strategy.

Not in the mind of a StormTrumper.

The "media" helped deliver the presidency to trump. Of course they are not trustworthy. When it counted they have let us down tremendously the last few decades.

You don't. But dumb as a stump increasingly seems to be a key prerequisite. That and stigginit.

I remember when news was a variety of different stories.  Nowadays, it's just talking (shouting) heads spouting spin about one story.  None of the news channels are really news.

Think very deeply before you buy into wholesale contempt of journalism.

"Before mass leaders seize the power to fit reality to their lies, their propaganda is marked by its extreme contempt for facts as such, for in their opinion fact depends entirely on the power of man who can fabricate it."
― Hanna Arendt, The Origins of Totalitariasm

I have very little faith in the media.

I have zero faith in Trump.

Only 42% of me trusts polls.

2017-07-04 05:45:48 PM
Ahhh the elusive 37%. Soon to be "rugged independents" in roughly 3.5 years

2017-07-04 05:58:59 PM
I have faith that "the media" will do whatever it considers most profitable, and that rarely includes providing useful, actionable, and meaningful information, and usually means that it's going to play to our biases and attempt to get emotional reactions out of us.

I have faith that Trump is going to say whatever farking thing he feels like, and any connection to the shared reality the rest of us inhabit is coincidental at best. Trump doesn't lie, he bullshiats. He bullshiats by the dump truck load. He moves it around on supertankers. He'll use the same bullshiat when he can, he'll use new bullshiat when he has to, but I can guarantee that the only thing he's good for is bullshiat.

Sunk cost fallacy.

2017-07-04 06:09:39 PM
Talking about "the media" as a single entity makes as much sense as trying to talk about muslims, black people, white people, christians, or any other large group as a single entity. The media ranges from Fox to The Enquirer to WaPo to Teen Vogue.

Ask a stupid question...

Look, I find CNN more trustworthy than Two Scoops, but I think the average thug is more trustworthy in that thugs are unlikely to sell out the nation to a hostile power. But CNN is not a great source of news. It hasn't been for a while. Broadcast news was always inferior to print, but CNN decided to focus on plane crashes, missing blonds, and giving both sides equal weight, whether that reflected reality or not.

That last thing is one of the reasons we now have  Republican Party in control, a party that thinks killing thousands of Americans each year is okay if it means more money for the wealthy. The same party that loves war but wants to get vet benefits. This is the same CNN that treated Two Scoops as a clown instead of running stories with the people he ripped off, with the women he molested, and with the people to whom he was a slum lord.

So, is CNN better than Twould Scoops? Sure. But, lord, that doesn't make it good.

I find it humorous that a web board founded on the idea that news orgs are mostly putting out bullshiat is now full of pearl clutchers who are fainting over the news that 70% of the population has come to a similar conclusion.

I'm not surprised so many Republicans still support Trump. What else do Republicans have other than religious zealots, incompetent politicians and hateful bigots? Ideology takes precedence over ability with far too many of the GOP.

So now, we have a major American political party that evolved into a collection of our nation's worst qualities, instead of our finest aspirations.

Your local news channel running the same "it's cold during the winter" article every fall is funny. President of the United State Donald Trump and his closet of racistsand liars trying to discredit the media while they're conspiring with a hostile foreign power to dismantle the Federal government is not.

I'm fine with people not trusting the media.  A little skepticism is warranted.  Just apply skepticism evenly to all sides and you're fine.

2017-07-04 09:04:52 PM
CNN, oh CNN. I imagine that the journalists ON CNN mean well. They're just... not good at it.

But the bigger problem is that CNN as a company is not concerned with news, it's concerned with RATINGS. That's why it's a bunch of talking heads shouting at eachother, and they are constantly getting Trump surrogates on there to say absolute nonsense. The guy in charge of CNN came from ESPN, where "people angry and shouting" worked, to generate a lot of ratings. So he does that on all the other shows. "Is the earth round? One of our panelists is a flat earther, and the other isn't retarded. Let's discuss it!" That doesn't accomplish anything.

But a lot of great journalism has sprung up. Mainly printwise. And I'd put Maddow against anyone in terms of journalistic rigor.

2016 saw a systemic polling error of 2 or 3 points. It was a pretty close race at the end thanks to Comey.

The state polls in MI and WI were pretty bad though.

There does have to be a distinction between journalist and "journalist", though. For example, I wouldn't be signing any Amnesty International petitions to get James O'Keefe out of prison.

What does journalists being murdered have to do with being skeptical of the news we get?  I'm not saying to discard all news, I'm saying we should consider how reputable the sources are and the pertainent context as well.  Skepticism is a healthy thing, more so in the current era.

But you?  You can take your unwarranted faux umbrage and stick that.

Not all news media solely focuses on profit, even those owned by corporations, as they are generally consistent on what news they report. The exception remains Fox News which slants its news to appeal to a dedicated audience as a profitable market share and an ideological propaganda tool.

If you really want unbiased, not-for-profit news, try listening to NPR or watching PBS. Pretty high journalistic standards with those two news sources.

One "side" is selling blatant lies, fear and racism. Maybe the problem is judging facts in terms of which side you're on.

Where is this? Why were they murdered/arrested? This comment is close to meaningless without any context.
