(Washington Post)   30-year study demonstrates that moderate drinking results in atrophy of the hippocampus. Fortunately, Farkers don't drink moderately, and even when we do, we're probably drinking to forget   ( washingtonpost.com) divider line

"Repeated use of this drug that changes the way your brain works can eventually change the way your brain works."

I'll file that next to "frequently filling your lungs with any sort of hot acrid smoke can eventually cause damage to your lungs" and "eating more food than you burn can eventually make your body larger" in my file of obvious (yet somehow controversial) medical facts.

Well hopefully it doesn't damage the amygdala because that would cause some serious social issues.

Playing Scrabble as a blood sport for the past fifteen years has damaged my brain far more than my moderate wine consumption. Just the other day I played INGATES and said "I think that's a word" just so my friend would challenge it. Wine might have given me a smaller hippocampus, but Scrabble has turned me into a real jerk.

I was going to post a photo of Woody Allen trading insults with the Count in Love and Death saying, "YOU should have such an atrophic hippocampus" but I saw this,
media2.fdncms.com
and, decided that it must be shown.  It isn't as weirdly sexual as Debbie Reynolds dressed as a football, but it's close...

I don't drink with the Hippocampus.  I drink with Pinky, my pet pink elephant.  He lives in my glove box with my gloves.

Great. So we are asking people with diminished memory function about their habits.
Yes. Makes a lot of sense.

I could come up with a study group that would show this. All I need to do is go into the outback, find 100 people who only drink 2 cans a week and then measure their brains. Try the same thing with laplanders and the results wouldn't be the same.

Learning the finer concepts of poker and using them at the table has gone a lot better for me these last 4 months of being sober than it did for the entire 10 years leading up to it.

It also has at least something to do with taking a minute to review what you learned, and with being willing to set aside time to study when you don't feel like it, neither of which were something I would consider when I was drinking.

Also, alcohol causes cancer and liver damage. Not to mention being a major cause of violent crime and accidents.

Alcohol is probably the worst drug out there, but it's so culturally ingrained in much of the world that people will use it as long as there are people. But it's basically only marignally less bad than smoking.

It's a lot less dangerous than being one of those mouthy teetotalers though. They walk right into fists all the time and die ironic deaths.

Anyone knows that a two a day drinker is actually drinking 3 times that much.

I read a long time ago that excessive drink kills off your brain cells.  I now conclude that new brain cells must generate to replace the lost ones or I would be unable to type at all.  So, I figure I'm way smarter than anyone else because I have so many shiny bright new brain cells.

You know what else atrophies your brain?  Living.

Seriously, I've been a ct/mri tech for 32 farking years.  Most people don't know it, but atrophy doesn't happen when you turn 80.  I  scan people every day who have lived puritan lives...and see mild to moderate ischemic changes, focal atrophy, multi-focal atrophy, and cerebello-pontine myelomalacia.  You know what these people have in common?  Bad genes.

Live your life, have fun, remember moderation.....and remember that these "studies" are coming from ivory tower academicians who live under the "publish or perish" rule.

This sounds a bit like a "Science News Cycle" story. Also, one study only demonstrates that it needs to be repeated. If ten similar studies show this I'll start paying attention.

So... what you are asking for was in a sci-fi novel (a Larry Niven one, I think), some sort of direct neural pleasure stimulator.

Basically in the novel (going from foggy memory), one race enslaved another race because they had an electric brain zapper that caused orgasms in the targets (but no other effects).   The enslaved became addicted to the zaps and would do the over-races bidding just to keep the sweet, sweet O's coming ( heh).

Why do I care about the hippocampus?  I'm not a doctor, I didn't take that oath.
