I think this one's more realistic.

Hey, whatever happened to that kid that was over in Afghanistan, that they found in the prison? He was American, turned Moslem? I don't even remember his name.

Arresting 4 for murder in Iraq is like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500

Now why didn't Mel Gibson think of having a steroid-pumped Jesus in his movie? That would have rocked.

Didn't see the movie.. but if the big J had been a weight lifter and into self-defense it might have been an entirely different book.

2004-05-21 12:00:19 PM

1) A guy already got a year for just not doing anything
2) several more are facing court martial
3) are you comparing humiliation with beheading?

can we all admit at this point that the events under investigation at Abu Ghraib include way more than the extreme acts of depraved humiliation, including rape and sodomy, beatings, physical duress through the use of foreign objects and elements, attempted murder and murder?

and for the record, no, I am not making that comparison...they are two totally different incidents.

They were arrested a week ago at a home in an area north of Baghdad.

Why are we just finding out now??????????

So the US troops can torture the four bastards for a week without anyone interupting just to find out they have nothing to do with the beheading ?

""We may find out that they have no association with the murder but we will continue to question them for some period of time until we are convinced they are innocent," Kimmitt said."

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? I believe someone has democratic theory backwards.

2004-05-21 12:11:42 PM
Quadriplegic: I have many questions as well. But let me address a few of yours.

What about the pasty white hands?
That they were fat?

Not all terrorists have dark complexion. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad has very light colored skin. He's also fat. Mahmoud Abouhalima has red hair and he's a veteran Afghan Mujahideen and convicted terrorist.

That Berg was wearing an orange (seems like a prison) suit?
One of my questions. They say on the tape that their act was a response to the Abu Ghraib situation so I'm guessing symbolism. However, I think Berg's body was found before the story broke in the major press about Abu Ghraib. That leads to more questions.

That the man who was supposed to be Zarqawi (sp?) didn't limp?
This is disputed information. Originally the CIA believed that Zarqawi had come to Iraq for treatment, but they later redacted that story. Today it remains unconfirmed if Zarqawi has any limp.

That there was very little blood from a severed head?
That a woman's scream was "inexpertly" added to the tape later?

Another one of my questions.

That the US misinterpreted "those who sit and do nothing" (Al Qaed? I'm not sure) as Al-Qaeda when independent translators knew the difference?
I've read many different stories on the translation. There's about ten different versions by now.

There are a lot of questions about the tape, and I'm not ready to commit to a point of view. As I said, the US could easily afford to do it better.

Yes, the US could fake it. But so could Al Qaida. I fall in the uncommitted category.

Okay, can someone just clarify something for me...

Do ANY pictures of Iraqi Rapes exist which haven't be disproved?

If you want to talk about blurring lines, let's discuss Bush's connections to the Bin Laden family and to the Saudi Royal family, hm?

1. Osama Bin Laden wants the Saudi royal family beheaded for apostacy. Saddam wanted them dead for being rich bastards whom he thought were screwing with the price of Gulf crude and putting the bite on Iraq's recovery following the Iran-Iraq war.

2. The rest of the Bin Laden clan has pretty much disowned their "black sheep" son. They're too busy making money on building projects for the Saudi royal family to mess with revolution.

And this involves a conspiracy with President Bush...how?

Who's drinking the Kool Aid here?

2004-05-21 12:13:35 PM
From the article:
"We may find out that they have no association with the murder but we will continue to question them for some period of time until we are convinced they are innocent,"

Translated version:
"We will strip them down naked and handcuff their hands behind their backs. Then we'll bring out our meanest german shepard. We'll have the dog snarling and growling in the guy's face telling him that if he doesn't confess we'll let the dog have a chunk of their junk. If that doesn't work we'll beat them up and try sodomizing them with glowsticks. If that doesn't work we'll pull out their fingernails and toenails, and if THEY STILL don't confess..."

That sure seems like the "American way"... doesn't it?

God, I am sick of you Republicans crying that the so-called "liberal" media is conspiring to destroy your hero's presidency.

Yeah. Whatever.

You can say that, when over 80% of "journalists" admit to being registered dems???

There are a wealth of links I could throw at you, but I'll settle for a few recent quotes...

How do you explain to Americans how you got that so wrong, and how do you answer your opponents who say that you took this nation to war on the basis of what have turned out to be a series of false premises?
ABCs Terry Moran to President Bush at his prime time news conference on April 13.

Two and a half years later, do you feel any sense of personal responsibility for September 11th?
New York Times reporter Elisabeth Bumiller to Bush.

Two weeks ago, a former counter-terrorism official at the NSC, Richard Clarke, offered an unequivocal apology to the American people for failing them prior to 9/11. Do you believe the American people deserve a similar apology from you, and would you be prepared to give them one?
CBSs John Roberts to Bush.

With public support for your policies in Iraq falling off... quite significantly over the past couple of months, Id like to know if you feel that youve failed as a communicator?
National Public Radios Don Gonyea to Bush.

Senator Ted Kennedy said Iraq is, George Bushs Vietnam. Given the fact that, that U.S. forces are committed there for the long haul, what steps do we need to take, Ambassador Bremer, to make sure that Iraq does not turn into another Vietnam?
NBCs Matt Lauer to Ambassador Paul Bremer, the chief U.S. administrator in Iraq, on Today, April 6.

You say commit more troops. But thats the same thing LBJ did in Vietnam. Do you worry that this is another Vietnam?
Katie Couric to Hillary Clinton on Dateline, April 16.

The CIA came out as a loser in this weeks hearing, but the real loser was [Attorney General] John Ashcroft, with that Joe McCarthy-type appearance this week. He was the only witness, Mark, who refused to give the committee his testimony ahead of time....And then he tried to spring this so-called Gorelick document, and he lied about its meaning and its contents.
Wall Street Journal Executive Washington Editor Al Hunt on CNNs Capital Gang, April 17.

Whatever her aspirations, these days she seems to be the life of the party the Democratic Party. And at times shes received like a rock star. She works on economic development in upstate New York, gives foreign policy and civil rights speeches, shakes hand after hand, signs book after book.
NBCs Katie Couric talking about the popularity of New York Senator Hillary Clinton during an interview shown on Dateline, April 16.

Diane Sawyer: Bruce Willis flew into war-torn Iraq not long ago to thank the troops.
Actor Bruce Willis: They are doing really great things in Iraq. Theyre opening schools, theyre getting the power turned back on. It may take some time, but it would be a terrible sin to abandon the Iraqi people now. I think it would be a drastic mistake to change administrations now while were still at war.
Sawyer: Well, somebody might argue that changing American presidents doesnt mean abandoning the Iraqi people.
Exchange on ABCs Good Morning America, April 7.

There are literally hundreds more.

Oh and your pointing the whole Monica thing only proves my point. If you'll recall, the media spent FAR more time hacking up Ken Starr than actually focusing on the fact that a sitting POTUS solicited a BJ from a dough headed young intern...in the oval office. Hey, but it was just sex, right? Whatever.

This is not a threadjack. My point is, the news media is far more interested in the salacious details an interrogation staged by a few undisciplined retards in the military than in anything to do with Berg. Their motivation? Stick it to Bush.

Yodas Ugly Brother

The rape photos that have circulated around the web previously are fakes, the Pentagon has hinted that there are indeed photos/videos of detainees being raped in their possession. And several detainees have given detailed and corroborrated accounts of rapes that occured at Abu Ghuraib.

This link has more:

"If these are released to the public, it's going to make matters worse. It's hard to believe," Rumsfeld said. "It's not a pretty picture."

Rumsfeld took the same message to the House Armed Services Committee later. "Just without any question, there will be more coming out," Rumsfeld said of the photographs, which he said he saw for the first time the night before his congressional appearance. "And there will be surprises."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., warned of further shocks, saying "the worst is yet to come."

"The American public needs to understand, we're talking about rape and murder here," Graham told reporters in the hallway. "We're not just talking about giving people a humiliating experience; we're talking about rape and murder and some very serious charges

"Statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception."

Where do you get this information? Surely if the liberal press were hellbent on distorting the news they wouldn't report this. Let's see some citation.

"sexual assaults"

http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/zforum/04/sp_world042104.htm

"Aptos, Calif.: Is it the policy of The Washington Post to print the names of American women who have been raped, or who accuse others of raping them? Why is it that The Post chooses to further degrade the victims in this scandal by publishing both their name and number?

Most ethical papers wouldn't treat Americans this way, but it's okay to treat the Iraqis this way? It certainly exposes the victims to further shame in their own communities, and it would have been easy to rely on The Post's integrity to simply say the victim's names were known to The Post, as is usually done in these circumstances.

Leonard Downie Jr.: We have been trying to withhold the names and images of the Iraqi victims of sexual assaults. We also are publishing scores of images of naked Iraqi victims of abuse because of our concern for their dignity.

Rockhead

"The media hammered Monica Lewinsky down our throats for two years"

I think you have the players and their acts completely mixed up. I, for one, am sure that my throat was not involved. Further, the timing was more like two minutes not two years as I'm sure Hillary would have gone looking for him after about 16 months.

Now as for the media, I think its certainly appropriate that we have 70 investigations, an apparently endless flow of pictures sent worldwide and international outrage focused on our entire country over the actions of less than eight reservists. Sure. In fact, why not try and influence the outcome of the war and make this one episode the one lasting image that everyone celebrates.

Lets use it to condemn our President, the Secretary of Defense and our entire chain of military command. Yeah, that makes sense. Certainly, we should then also absolve the terrorists of any blame in the Berg killing too, given their proclaimed love and care of non-Muslims. Yeah, the terrorists would never cut anyone's head off.

Funny you would mention that

By not forgetting to add E
So there's both SherKhan and ShereKhan

That actually has nothing at all to do with democratic theory. What you're talking about is a matter of constitutionalism.

crawlspace ..

stop crying. those are all valid questions that i would EXPECT the media to ask a president who is obviously in over his head. it's pure fantasy to beleive that iraq was handled properly. i mean. it's just not so.

my only wonder is why you failed to provide any of the answers to those questions..

so basically. your argument is the media is biased against bush because they are asking him tough questions that don't really have easy scripted answers. give me a break. those questions MUST be asked and the american people MUST know where their supposed 'leader' is taking our country.

2004-05-21 12:37:38 PM

Agreed, it's not democratic theory, but it's really just a legal principle inherited from Britain. I wouldn't call it "constitutionalism".
