Well done!

Good thing we don't torture people to death any more in CIA black sites.

Or do we?

So uh, even taking into account the fact that this kid taunted the dynamite monkey that is North Korea, am I the only one who feels way too creeped out at how blase everyone seems to be about the fact that they basically murdered this kid?

Yeah, it was dumb as shiat for him to go to North Korea, but that does not give North Korea the right to farking murder him.

Can we crowdfund a group of mercenaries to go over to North Korea and put bullets in the heads of all the leadership?

I had little sympathy for him when he was detained, but this is too much. Poor kid. This is not right.

So the moral of this story is don't go to north korea.  I feel really bad for the kid and his family but those asshats in the north are not sane by any definition of the word.  I'm thinking they couldn't break him so they tortured him.

Maybe? I think that the reaction to the poor dude's fate is what it is because nobody is surprised that NK would beat him to death over a poster or whatever. Had this happened to him in Spain or Canada or Japan, people would probably, rightfully, freak out.

I think they tortured him DESPITE breaking him. As entertainment and instruction in what you do with Americans when you get your hands on them.

Seeing as they have detained Americans at a rate of almost 1 per year over the past two decades, I would assume the moral should have been learned long ago.

If people want to go to North Korea, awesome, more power to them. It's a weird time capsule kind of place that might be interesting to see firsthand. Just don't touch anything, do exactly what your handlers tell you to do, and assume that if your handlers aren't nearby that you're still being watched.

At the same time it's well known that a lot more people die in that country than just this one person, it's just that they're not US citizens.

I don't think anyone is blase about it, but I think that "not surprised" might be a better way of phrasing it. Much in the same way they would not be surprised to learn that a guy who wrestles alligators winds up getting eaten by one.

Why anyone would voluntarily go to NK is beyond me and why anyone would think it's a good idea to vandalize while you were there just blows my mind.

No, but there seem to be plenty of Farkers who think Wesley should have been executed for smashing the greenhouse glass, because the area was arbitrarily out of bounds.

They don't think it's him in that grainy security video, either. There's a lot of Nick Berg and Danny Gearhart to all this case...

At the bookstore, I idly flipped through a tour guide for Korea. They had a brief section on the North, recommending against going. They said that, if you DO go, do what your handlers say (bow to statue of Fat Boy, lay flowers at tomb of Fat Boy's dad, whatever).  They said it's not just for your own safety, but for the safety of your handlers who may suffer punishment.

Should be executed? No. But if you run up to a grizzly bear wearing a suit made of salmon and honey, and get eaten, well I'm not going to feel bad for you.

I disagree with that. Their hard currency is going to support the NK regime. It might be a drop in a bucket, but for me it's a issue of personal morality.

Nothing however excuses that kind of maltreatment and murder, however.

It shocks me that American citizens still insist on traveling there as tourists. Anything you could ever see in person given the current regime's tight control over foreign visitors is hardly worth the inordinate risk.

Yeah. They go over all the rules before the trip starts, more than once. Many of them are stupid rules, because that's the kind of place you're visiting, but you still need to follow them, because again, that's the kind of place you're visiting.

All that said, I feel terrible for this kid. No one should die for making one stupid mistake. And there is some dispute as to whether or not he even tried to steal the poster in the first place, making the whole thing all the more bizarre.

I don't think it's being blase, it's more just "Yeah, well.... they'll do that.  That's best Korea for ya."  I mean are you surprised in any way that they would do such a thing?

Let's have them retake the Pueblo while they are at it.

I don't believe he did what they said he did.  The charges make no sense, and the video evidence was one of those potato-videos. Why would a rich kid attempt to steal a poster so a church would give him a used car? It's just senseless. They murdered him.  Torturing prisoners is normal there.

2017-06-19 05:17:01 PM
On one hand, I feel very sorry for the family and it's shocking what they've gone through and now have to deal with.

On the other hand... Don't pull stupid shiat in North Korea. Ever.

What surprises me the most in all this is that he was apparently not proselytizing for Republican Jesus. He was just an adventurous, daring kid who wanted to visit someplace new.

RIP, handsome dude. Condolences to your parents.
