Looks like we're... on their radar.

If it wasn't a catalyst that could lead to a nuclear war, I'd say sure, let's convert some borscht flyboys to vapor and metal bits.

Umm. They don't have to put fighters up to threaten our planes.

2017-06-19 11:15:58 AM
I'm sure the Russians would just hate to sell Syria more jets to replace the ones shot down by the US.

Don't worry guys: I am sure this is nothing that ending sanctions against Russia won't solve so let's get right on that.

It's the first Syrian jet the US shot down, so not surprising that Russia was concerned.  Though I'm sure they've both (Syria and Russia) been tracking US aircraft for a long time.

Considering it was a su-22, aka flying fossil, the folks at mig are probably ecstatic.
Yuri, good news! Remember when Assad told us " I don't need to upgrade my air force, I still have lots of planes that still fly"?
Well, the americans are working on that for us.

Nobody rational thinks the US Is going to war against Russia.

On the other hand, Trump's people have publicly stated they want to undermine the EU and NATO.

They may not be coordinating with Putin, but they're working towards the same goal.

Chill President Art of Deal has this.

Don't you understand, what I'm trying to say?
And can't you feel the fears I'm feeling today?
If the button is pushed, there's no running away,
There'll be no one to save with the world in a grave,
Take a look around you, boy, it's bound to scare you, boy,
And you tell me over and over and over again my friend,
Ah, you don't believe we're on the eve of destruction.

Why would that necessarily lead to nuclear war?  We've fought Russian pilots before:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Union_in_the_Korean_War#Soviet_air_intervention

And the Russians manned anti-aircraft missile sites in North Vietnam, shooting down US pilots:

I don't seem to recall a nuclear war happening back then.

Perfectly possible for Trump to knock down a few geriatric Syrian fighters to keep the rubes distracted, while simultaneously undermining the European coalition as fast as he can.  Any strategic thinker in Moscow would be perfectly happy with that tradeoff.

It was only a limited exchange. Everybody who remembers the nuclear war, died in the nuclear war.

Think about it: where are the silos? North Dakota. Ever been there? Of course not. Know anybody from there? Nope. Demographically, who lives in North Dakota? A bunch of young men working in "oil fields." Yeah, sure.

Chernobyl was an unexploded ICBM. Study it out.

Logic is on our side: this isn't a case of a world struggle between two divergent ideologies, of different economic systems. Every day your country becomes more socialistic, my country becomes more capitalistic. Pretty soon we will meet in the middle and join hands. No, my dear doctor; you're going to defect because you want to live.

There's waaay too little plutonium in an ICBM to create that big of a mess.  The core of an RBMK reactor is gigantic:

img.fark.net

/ they were designed as a sort of a dual-use power-reactor and plutonium-factory for nuclear weapons, but consequently their cores were huge and contained an enormous amount of fuel

Ground to air missiles are lethal.  That's why they're usually the USAF's first target in any combat area.

Syria decided to attack coalition forces in the deconfliction zone, what part of that account does Putin not understand?
No, this threat is meant for domestic consumption. He must know that his fighters and s400 batteries are too vulnerable to make light of attacking western forces. He's banking on the fact that we aren't in the habit of testing another forces airspace once it's been established on paper.
It's an bold move and all I can say is I hope his fighters ejection seats work as good in combat as they do in air shows.
