JFC.  15 meters through a water-filled hole in the ground?  In Bali?  What if you got stuck?  What if there was a snake?  I'm on the other side of the planet and I feel claustrophobic.  How bad must that prison have been?

I misread that as bail jail and thought wow, bail must be really expensive at that jail.

Well, since the headline references it, I'd say "no".

Nice. Very chill. I listen to liquid drum and bass and a couple other genres that sound like that. Check out di.fm sometime if you haven't already.

They crawled to freedom through 15 metres of shiat-smelling foulness I can't even imagine- or maybe I just don't want to. 15 metres...that's the length of five football fields; just shy of half a mile.

How dumb do you have to be to escape with 10 weeks to go on your sentence?

Pretty darn bad. Prisons over there make US prisons seem like a spring vacation. In the US, the prisoners are provided food, but over there, in the majority of prisons, you have to buy your food from other prisoners who run concession stands -- which organized crime 'smuggles in' and the guards get a piece of the action. Same with sleeping space. For a fee you might actually buy your way into a cell built for two which only has three other occupants. Beatings by other prisoners are frequent and if a prisoner gets murdered, he lays there until the guards discover him and drag him out. Not much of an investigation into the killing is made.

Corruption in the prison services is rife. Most prisoners are not considered people. Essentially the prisoners pay the prison to provide them with basic life support.

An American criminal winding up in one of those places would long to get back to his previous American jail, where he gets nourishing meals, clean clothing, a bunk, air conditioning, medical care and commissary.

Depends.  What is the over under on surviving those final 10 weeks?  It could be a situation where the Warden wants you to stay alive for most of your sentence, so he can skim money meant to feed and cloth you, but they have an unofficial policy of having the prisoners die of "accidents" right before they are released.

We just had an Australian released after 10-odd years.  He would have been fine.

I know that you don't pick up the soap if you drop it in a prison shower, but really...I find a 15 meter tunnel seems a little excessive.

Must have had a hard time extraditing themselves once they got out of the prison....

that being said, prison reform is a dire need, probably in most places and certainly here.  (USA, i mean.)  but it's so scary to get involved because of the inevitable horror stories.  if that sounds pussy, that's because it is, but it's still true.  and i think it keeps a lot of decent people from facing the situation- it's just too awful to think about until it's one of your own in there.

This is a pretty refreshing approach to the problem.
Usually people there go out of prison by paying the right person.

Also, Bali is really, really farked up. Lived there, never again.
