John Oliver is annoying as fark. I understand the need for actual issues to be brought to light and discussed, but why does it have to come from such an unfunny smarmy douchebag? His shtick is repetitive and obvious.  I loathe him so.

I really enjoy John Oliver, but sometimes I wish he would stay serious a bit longer.  During the coal segment every time he made a serious point he instantly has to follow it up with an over the top silly joke to lighten the mood.  I know it's a comedy show, but if you're trying to make a point, let it hit home for a second.  I don't know.  I would almost prefer the show to be a serious think piece with a few snark bits thrown in.  They do really good job of looking into and investigating things others don't, and an audience that seems to want to be involved in those issues.  Just my two cents.

I was gon' say. . . this is an industry that (IIRC) gets its employees killed at a higher rate than the military and alters the maps more than nukes would.  What exactly would a legal tangle with a comedian do to a coal company's PR?

Yes, once the polar ice is fully melted, plenty more oil deposits will be so accessible.

You need to realize that you're a Farker, and as a Farker, you have a soul full of bitterness, a heart of stone, and a tolerance -- even preference -- for wallowing in misery at doses well above the LD50 for an average human being.
I don't think John Oliver is funny but I don't watch LWT for the jokes anyway.  But they're necessary because for people who don't have the elephant skin of Fark, the sorts of topics they cover are just so brutally depressing that making an absurd joke every five seconds is the only way to make the subject matter palatable.  It's also probably somewhat cathartic to the writers; they need something else to do besides pore over mountains of documentation no industry outsider was intended to read that are basically psychopathic playbooks on how to take money from the poor, desperate and dying.  If I worked there and wasn't allowed to (badly) Photoshop a donkey in a tutu playing the bongos, after reading up on the 2847th document along the lines of "plan for getting the Elbonian goverment to mandate extracting livers from Elbonian schoolchildren to sell to filthy rich drunks and getting it all paid for with Medicare taxes", I'd probably slit my wrists.

We live in a country that goes beyond enabling psychopaths.  We celebrate them, worship them, and look up to them as wise leaders.  John Oliver himself will die of old age (but more likely burn out) before LWT could possibly run out of topics.

Yeah, I should probably just be happy that people are actually opening themselves up to issues like this that exist and are rarely looked into.

that's highly unlikely

you'd have to run out of natural gas first

especially since coal ain't really replacing much of what we use petroleum for
