It never ceases to amaze me how convicted and admitted murders always seem to find Jebus just before the hammer falls.

Sorry boys, you may get away with coveting thy neigbour's ass and get forgivness, but it seems to me that when you break the big rule it's game over, don't call us, we'll call you.

2002-01-10 09:37:19 AM
So I assume Texas has a really low murder rate then, capital punishment being such an effective deterent?

2002-01-10 09:39:20 AM
Harmonia, "...capital punishment being such an effective deterent?"

How 'bout capital punishment as just "sweet revenge."

2002-01-10 09:42:39 AM
Capital punishment may not deter murders but for those that are executed, they'll never do it again. Its that simple.

2002-01-10 09:43:00 AM
But does it work tick or does it merely satisfy your well known blood-lust?

2002-01-10 09:50:19 AM
Harmonia, as Jefferson Davis just posted "...for those that are executed, they'll never do it again." That could be considered the final deterrence.

My blood-lust is well known? That is so cooooool!

slackers.

2002-01-10 09:59:25 AM
Now we dont have capital punishment so we ahould have a higher murder rate then, lets see:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/newsid_810000/810522.stm

Home Office figures showed the murder rate in the US in 1998 was 6.3 per 100,000 people compared with 1.4 per 100,000 in England and Wales.

The murder rate in London is 2.9 per 100,000 compared with 8.6 per 100,000 in New York and 49.15 per 100,000 in Washington DC.

A report produced by the US Department of Justice in 1998 would appear to support the Home Office's claims.

It shows the murder rate was 5.7 times higher in the US than England and Wales and the rape rate was about three times higher.

Figures show people are much more likely to get shot in New York than London

The report also showed firearms were used in 68% of murders in the US compared with 7% in England and Wales, and in 41% of robberies in America against 5% in England and Wales.

We got rid of it because too many innocent people were getting hung.

2002-01-10 10:13:39 AM
That speaks more of a bad court system than anything else.

2002-01-10 10:21:52 AM
"We have now freed more people [13] than we have put to death [12] under our system," [Gov. George] Ryan said of Illinois. Though he supports the death penalty, Ryan last month declared the nation's first state moratorium on executions until steps can be taken to restore confidence in the equity of a system that has admittedly put some innocents on death row."

"Bad court system" doesn't even BEGIN to describe it. And that's Illinois. Imagine being a black man on trial for murder in Texas. You're pretty much farked.

peace,

mh

2002-01-10 10:24:50 AM
Put them on death row BUT NOT TO DEATH! So the system is working.

2002-01-10 10:25:19 AM
Better one innocent man gets executed than 100 guilty go free.....The Texas Way

Actually, Harmonia, paintings are "hung," people are "hanged."

Harmonia: Don't bother comparing US crime/murder rates with the rest of the First World. Americans either don't want to hear it, don't care, or can't put 2+2 together anyway. We are the greatest nation on earth in every aspect, remember?

2002-01-10 10:49:49 AM
Harmonia,

If your done tooting your horn about Englands low crime rate read this

According to figures released by the London police, muggings involving a firearm have risen by 53 percent, from 435 during the six months ending November 2000 to 667 during the same period last year.
The number of murders with a gun in London jumped by 90 percent during the same time, from 16 to 30. That's a far cry from the 640 murders - many gun-related - in New York alone last year, but that figure is way down from the peak of 2,262 in 1992.
Street crime in Britain's capital has also skyrocketed in recent months, with 19,248 robberies reported between September and November 2001, up more than 100 percent from the 8,614 robberies during the same period the previous year.

Hand guns were outlawed in Britain in 1997 after the massacre of 16 children and a teacher at a primary school in Dunblane, Scotland. Some 160,000 handguns were surrendered to police. ' I guess the criminals decided since they were already breaking laws what's one more and kept their guns, how shocking'

Dave Rodgers, vice chairman of the Metropolitan Police Federation, said the ban made little difference to the number of guns in the hands of criminals. According to a recent survey, the number of crimes in which a handgun was reported increased nationally from 2,648 in 1997-98 to 3,685 in 1999-2000.

Now how did that happen?

2002-01-10 10:59:59 AM
Hey what's up guys? No response to this. Don't tell me this new info is a show-stopper.

2002-01-10 11:01:20 AM
I live in Texas and I am all for the death penalty for scumbag murders. They should broaden it for child molesters and the like. I just wish it were on network tv and much more painful, no wussy lethal injection. Although our legal system sucks because you are guilty if you cant afford a lawyer.

2002-01-10 11:05:31 AM
Yup Cap, did you read my figures on murder rates?

Less people shot in this whole country a year than in one major US city a month.

Keep your gun laws if you want but no-one here wants to go down your road here.

2002-01-10 11:07:12 AM
One more point, how many of the thousands shot in the US every year were shot with legally held firearms?

In our case no-one can own a handgun, even the police dont carry guns, and we like it that way.

2002-01-10 11:07:17 AM
WorldCitizen, of the three choices you provide....hmmmmm...I personally choose "don't care."

2002-01-10 11:11:55 AM
Hey Harmonica--

The murder rate in London is 2.9 per 100,000 [it's rising rapidly, by the way] compared with 8.6 per 100,000 in New York and 49.15 per 100,000 in Washington DC.

This is very interesting. Thanks for the post. BTW, Washington D.C. probably has the toughest gun laws on the books here in the States.

2002-01-10 11:12:09 AM
disHarmonia,

Judging from the fact that the number or murders with guns is going up like Anna Nicole Smith's waiste size, you are headed down our road. Hell street crimes period in London are up 100%, fark your in the HUV lane on the crime superhighway. You better make sure your doors locked.

2002-01-10 11:14:38 AM
Harmonia,"In our case no-one can own a handgun, even the police dont carry guns, and we like it that way."

You like the fact that the only people in England, besides the police, who own guns in England are criminals. I guess that makes you law abiding citizens easy pickens.

2002-01-10 11:14:52 AM
Whoever wrote the Fark headline to this article should be sent to Texas and be summarily executed as it said nothing about G.W.Bush and the supposed 9 day record.

Harmonica:

What's the murder/crime rate in Switzerland where everybody is REQUIRED to own an automatic weapon?

2002-01-10 11:18:55 AM
"BTW, Washington D.C. probably has the toughest gun laws on the books here in the States."

Yeah, but that doesn't mean shiat being that DC is a very small territory that is a 10 minute drive from places without strick gun laws.

2002-01-10 11:20:08 AM
"I guess that makes you law abiding citizens easy pickens."

But a hell of a lot less likely to get killed.

2002-01-10 11:23:56 AM
MayoBoy,

I am going to guess that the crime rate in Switzerland is ridiculously low. I say this because if I were a burglar there I would be terrified to enter a home knowing with absolute certainty the owner was armed.

2002-01-10 11:26:38 AM
What's even the point of comparing two foreign cultures? If I really wanted, I could cite crime rates for Saudi Arabia, where public executions are not only for murderers, but often petty thieves as well. Percentages don't really mean jack, sure England may be safer, but that doesn't necessarily mean better. People living under the Spanish dictator of the 1960s were really damned safe, of course they lived in a police state, too.

2002-01-10 11:27:39 AM
Capigula: There are a million things that go into crime and murder rates, including guns. I'm also guessing the Swiss don't have the poverty that we have. Then they probably don't have the gangs that we have. Their education statistics are probably better than ours. This also applies to many of our First World cousins. Again, not really a black and white issue. US gun laws are only part of the contributing factor to our insane level of slaughter compared to other developed nations.

2002-01-10 11:28:12 AM
WorldCitizen,"But a hell of a lot less likely to get killed."

But judging by the numbers that is becoming less and less true. And less likely than who, not the people in Switzerland I would venture to guess. Anyone know for sure?

2002-01-10 11:28:45 AM
Well its not as simple as that in good old Switzerland.

All male citizens have automatic weapons but thats cos tey are all in the military and under military discipline and woe betide anyone who used their gun for amy other reason than under orders.

Also most of the crap jobs in Switzerland are dome by guest workers, who make up nearly 30% of the population but have no access to weapons.

But as I said, pointless things, banging your head of a wall, kicking inanimate objects and arguing with merkins about guns.
