The side of the American troops on the ground.

The side of the civilians, the ones who have not been killed, who protested peacefully for a democratic revolution.  All 3 of them who are still there and alive.

Not according to WaPo,
A statement distributed by the Syrian military said that the aircraft's lone pilot was killed in the attack and that the jet was carrying out a mission against the Islamic State.
"The attack stresses coordination between the US and ISIS, and it reveals the evil intentions of the US in administrating terrorism and investing it to pass the US-Zionist project in the region," the Syrian statement said, using an acronym for the Islamic State.

Seriously- Can they take it to the UN though?

I know the UN doesn't have teeth but it would be a blemish on our actions. Pro-Assad militias and forces are hitting US backed forces. Before we could claim defense against pro-Assad militias. Now we are using direct action against Assad Gov't forces.

What if next time it is a Russian plane hitting US-backed troops? Do we smoke a Russian bird?

More in the sense of non-security council sense. Like a letter of condemnation from the general body. not direct action.

No. Even though President Dicktard is our leader, we're still the good guys. We're not going to get a strongly worded letter. Not unless he starts cluster bombing schools and hospitals like the Russians... and even they don't get one. Why? No one gives a flying f*ck about what happens in Syria. No one.

Genocidal government say what?

Seriously, Assad and his government are deeply, deeply horrid people. They routinely target civilians, including hospitals and children. They use chemical weapons against those civilians, and most of the slaughter (they've killed about half a million civilians at this point) has been conducted by air strikes. Shooting down a Syrian government plane is not something anybody at the UN is going to even think about condemning. Well, maybe Russia would vote for it, but that's pretty much the entire list. If you're getting worked up about the US shooting down a plane and one pilot, who was, with near certainty, directly responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians, and not the deaths of those civilians, then you have some seriously farked up priorities.

18 years?  Clearly our fighter jet technology is insufficient.  We should invest in the F-.25, so we can shoot down one enemy jet a quartet.

We already bombed one of their airfields, and the rest of the world didnt give a ghost of a dead man's fart about it.

No one cries about what happens to Assad's crusty ass; the Russians don't even really care.

Open war is getting closer. We had been fighting a war by proxy with the two sides in Syria as our avatars. That line is blurring quickly as both Russia and our forces escalate with direct action.

Well we spent $60+M to blow up a couple of hangars anyway. I think I saw that only like 25 of the 59 missiles launched actually reached the target and apparently none hit the airstrip. They were using the runways to launch attacks like 10 minutes later.

/WINNING!

well to be fair the US has a long history of out murdering, murdering psychopaths, responsible for more dead than nazi germany and also made nazi germany possible by selling weapons to hitler and financing hitler, and then you elected the grandson of a nazi profiteer, no one complains because the US is so violent and murderous that nothing is shocking any more

Won't happen.  Russia won't get into a conventional spat with us because they will get their arse kicked.  Their great equalizer is nukes, and they won't use those unless we actually invade Russia, something we will never do.  It will just keep going as it always has when it comes to them and the west - they will sabre rattle, and follow that up with still more sabre rattling,.

LOL.

Won't happen while The Donald is stinking up the Oval Office.

You'll need to wait until at least November 2018 for that.

This, MAD is still in effect, nobody has anything to gain in a nuclear war, and a conventional war between NATO and Russia would almost certainly see Russia getting it's ass handed to it.  The US & Friends can put troops in Moscow, Russia has no real friends and an antiquated Navy, so they can't put troops in DC.
