I'd say Ledger and Nicholson are hard to pin down. They both did phenomenal jobs, but were playing the character differently on purpose.

But yeah, Hamill's the man.

Mark Hamill, because his Joker wanted to be a homicidal maniac, but knew he was on a kid's cartoon and the censors wouldn't allow it.

I have all sorts of conflict issues within my household and with my HM (Ex-) and her adult son..but..one thing that's always been able to be counted on is that if the conversation is *anything* comic/cartoon/anime/sci-fi/fantasy related, the son and I can suddenly get pulled into hours-long conversations that are amongst the most enjoyable things I have to currently look forward to in my life..   Pursuant to this topic, I just went and asked him the headline question..

Me:  Who's the greatest Joker of them all..movie, TV, animation..?
Him:  (thinking)  There were at least three different 'types' of Joker..
Me:  Best of them all..?
Him:  Mark Hamill, of course..

I think Hamill's portrayal will outlast and outshine all the live performances as time moves on..

/..popped in the thread absolutely knowing there would be no other answer from any posters..

Nicholson and Ledger's Jokers are completely different characters so it's sort of apples and oranges. Although Jack was pretty much just playing himself as usual. I'll take everyone's word for it and vote Hamill.

Hamil has the benefit of doing a great body of work, let it marinate in public consciousness for over a decade, and then come back and do an evolved performance.

That really isn't fair to the contender Ledger who only has one movie performance.

I almost feel like they should both win because they're different mediums: hamil gets animators while Ledger has to emote.

But put a gun to my head I think Ledger is just simply more iconic and pure in that single performance. By a hair.

One thing that B:AS had, and the 90's movies didn't, was villains with understandable motivations: Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, etc.  Then they had this Joker... a destructive force of nature that even Batman could barely survive sometimes.  Your best bet for surviving the Joker was to hope he never noticed you in the first place.

I'm not saying Romero's performance was better than the others, but you do have to admire his loyalty to his mustache.

I have to go with Heath Ledger. He steps into an ongoing series, so he's got the challenge of just carving out a space for himself. There was already an iconic, for movie audiences, portrayal of the character to overcome. And the style of the movie is more crime drama than comic book, so he has to do it serious even though he's going to be in clown makeup the whole time. Then, not only does he make it work, he not only nails it, he creates an all time great movie villain.

2017-06-19 02:41:06 AM
If you can get past the small unorthodox changes in appearance, Jared Leto's Joker is fantastic. Especially his voice.

2017-06-19 02:44:58 AM
Put me on the Ledger list. That was an awesome performance regardless of his death.

2017-06-19 02:46:19 AM
Ledger's Joker just hasn't stood up to the test of time. At the time TDK came out I remember everyone was head over heels regarding the Joker, and his death probably had more to do with it than his talent.

But now years later, when we've finally gotten through mourning Heath Ledger, and watching TDK all over again, I can't really say his Joker was all that good. He ran away with the role and made something else entirely with it. He basically let the make-up artists and wardrobe create his look, and then he did an impression of Tom Waits for his voice.

That's not really anything big. Aaron Eckhart brought more depth, feeling, and genuinity to the role of Harvey Dent/Two-Face than Ledger did with the Joker. Eckhart really seemed to understand the purpose of the character, and how he was in the comics. Ledger on the other hand went on record saying he hated comic books and comic book movies and would only play the Joker if he could do whatever he wanted, and Christopher Nolan agreed to it.

That doesn't make Ledger a great Joker, it makes Ledger a decent actor. But when you're comparing Jokers to faithfulness to the comics, even Romero's Joker beats Ledger because at the time, he was pretty much channeling the Joker in the comics at the time, which was just about as campy as the TV show.

Ledger's Joker, on the other hand... never really was in any of the comics, except maybe in some alternate reality version somewhere, but DC Comics never had any interest in making the character more like Ledger's portrayal, but truth be told it's equally possible it's because DC Comics makes a lot of dumb decisions.

That's pretty universal, think.  The list in TFA fills in all the other animated voice guys on the ladder somewhere.  I'd say how you order Romero and Nicholson is a bit of a coin flip, too, or at least YMMV.

Not a comic book person here, just giving my opinion as a movie/TV fan:

Hamill is overrated in the role by aficionados. Good, yes, but the best? A voice? Eh... no.

Ledger is kind-of a wild card, because he played a unique cinematic version. He did well, better than anything else he ever did as an actor IMO.

I grew up loving the Romero role. He played his own part very well, more pranks, but with some intelligence behind his plots.

The Nicholson role was great, "Love That Joker" and story around his character and sense of humor were well (if not oddly) developed relative to other movie franchises.

In other words... until Kevin Spacey plays the Joker, I have no opinion on the matter.

2017-06-19 03:02:16 AM
Ledger's Joker was okay, but I can't watch him without thinking he's just Tom Waits gone criminally insane.

Hamill is the definitive Joker. He's funny, but frightening. When he goes over the top it always has an edge  to it, instead of just being hokey like others.

And frankly, if they could put makeup on Nicholson and make him look like a convincing Joker (even though he just played himself, basically), they could have made up Hamill, too, and it's a shame they never tried.

All I can really say in regard to that is it's an opinion, but I've always felt that's why Hamill does win the Joker contest for me.  He can make me like that character that much, despite the fact that he only controls the voice and not the other elements at all.  Pencils into my book as all the more of an achievement because of that, really.  I was pretty "Wait, what?" when that part of the voice casting was made known - but it won me over pretty quickly.

I liked ledgars performance when it came out.  TDK was a good movie, but in hindsight, ledgar wasn't 'the joker' he was just a smart psychopath.  The joker is kind of something else entirely and I think hamill captures that better (as well as the writes of the cartoon)
