George Bailey from "It's a Wonderful Life" would like a recount.

Marlin lost his kid once and then got a brain-damaged babysitter who has no long-term memory.

Don Vito had Sonny AND Fredo.  And Mikey was a wife-beater.  Oh and his daughter was a spendthrift slut who picked up gold-diggers and eventually became Cruella DeVille.

The movie does little to portray his role of father to his kids.

He didn't risk his own life, he risked this if his children. Without the intervention if Boo Radley they story would have been very different.

Atticus acted out of principle without awareness of the potential cost. While this is noble the cost without BIO's intervention would have catastrophic.

So the moral is don't stand up for injustice unless you have a hermit bodyguard lurking in the shadows for protection?

Apparently, or if you have to stand against injustice make sure your defendant is white.

Anyway, bottom line, while Finch knew Bob Ewell was a bad man, he obviously didn't think he would go as far as attacking children in order to get revenge. Yes, Finch made a serious, costly error in judgment, but it was not a moral error. It didn't mean he did the wrong thing by making a principled stand for justice. The moral blame for Ewell's attack is 100% on Ewell.
