Wow, how did they protect 7 forwards and not him. At least the Pens had the excuse of the goalie rule.

And man, even though Luango is probably the pick, I would really really want to take Jagr there under the Veteran leadership excuse and because it is fricking Jagr so he needs a new team. He'll actually set the games played record this year so if LV takes him that's free publicity.

I think Ottawa is stuck.  Phaneuf won't waive the NTC and the Sens can't give up young d-men, hence exposing Ryan.

We are starved for Pro sports in Vegas, so the games should draw big crowds the first season. The owners want to make sure they continue to draw big crowds further down the road, however. Especially with the Raiders coming here.

Yeah but there are some risks.  Some guys are getting exposed because of contract size, and Vegas should avoid those like the plague.  Other players are good but old, and expansion teams should always go young.  If McPhee really wants a consistent contender in the 3-5 year range he'll take guys like Fluery and Neal to create a bridge for the draft picks and build the rest with younger, cheaper options.

It's the smart move, I think. Keep in mind that they still have to work within the salary cap, but for their entire draft list (so 30 players instead of 23, like everyone else). And they must draft a specific number of forwards, defensemen, and goalies. Basically, Vegas can force teams to outbid each other to keep their guys.

Don't get me wrong I'm totally okay with that, many teams are in kinda awkward spots and if the price is a 1st to get out of it, so be it. You will have a lot of "away team" fans in the building for a year or two, the flights are cheap even from Canada, but getting a decent team on the ice that can keep up with the rest of the league will really help get some "home team" fans. See Nashville for a model for great home team fans.

Jagr is not on the Florida Panthers any more. He is a UFA. Vegas cannot pick him. They could try to negotiate a contract with him, though.

Don't worry. He'll most likely be back in Florida next year. I doubt he would want to go out to Vegas (unless he REALLY liked Gallant).

\Since I now said that, he will be playing in Vegas next year.

Vegas would be smarter to take Weegar, Marchessault, or Smith from Florida. Luongo has had hip problems the past 2 years, still has 5 years left on his contract, and is almost 40.

He's not a UFA until July 1.  If you look at the list a lot of pending free agents are exposed.  Vegas could take him, or Boyle or other potential free agents if they wanted to.  They'd get exclusive negotiating rights for the rest of the month but that's about it.

Actually, they could work to sign a FA right now and if they reach a deal; that player counts as their selection from his old team.

Practical_Draconian:

Oh big time deals - already set in (non-public) stone.  Otherwise Bieska would have been bought out & Vats already traded (thus locking in Manson & getting something for Vats).  Rumor mill seems to be LV picking Kerdiles along with a trade later for say Theodore (on favorable terms to LV) for someone that they will draft on Wed.

_/with a wild card of Stoner being tossed in to the Theo trade as then it will give the Ducks cap space & will help LV get to the cap floor
_/_/although if I was McPhee I'd laugh at Stoner & draft a much better player with a similar contract...

Yeah, I was watching games while taking care of a lot of other matters. Things finally settled down just in time for a vacation last week to, of all places; Vegas. Where I saw the Pens take the Cup while playing a poker tournament at the Aria, which was the first of 8 I played and got nothing from it.

Hockey coming to Vegas was a common topic of conversation. The locals seem pretty interested. Had a couple of chats about which teams they should try to get tickets to see.

True.  Although they can choose up to 10 players not under contract for next season, it does not seem smart for Vegas to choose an UFA just for the negotiating rights unless that player has expressed a desire to play for them.  It might make more sense to wait until 1 July 12:01 am to try to sign them.  At least that way, they could get a player under contract from a team, then sign their UFA 2 weeks (or so) later.

Or something.

/Remember, there is a reason Vinnie Viola did not call me for the GM position with Florida.

My understanding is that if they sign and UFA, e.g. Jagr, they can't pick anyone else from the team. But what will LV do with Luongo AND Fleury? Plenty of post draft trades coming up...

proteus_b: My understanding is that if they sign and UFA, e.g. Jagr, they can't pick anyone else from the team. But what will LV do with Luongo AND Fleury? Plenty of post draft trades coming up...

Yeah, I'm an idiot. I said they could not pick him, and I was wrong. They could pick him, or Kindl, or Vanek, or any of Florida's (or any other team's) UFA. But that would be their one and only pick from that team, whether said UFA signs with Vegas or not.

With Vegas needing to fill both an NHL and AHL team, picking an UFA during the "Expansion Draft" time, to me, just does not make sense.

/Fleury (as much as I despise him) and Mrázek would be an excellent goaltending tandem to start any team with.

Yeah, like he's totally going to go to yet another team that won't make the playoffs.  The guy is still stunningly good for being in his mid-40s.  Everyone else from his draft year has LONG since retired.

Almost feel bad that he keeps bouncing from crappy team to crappy team.

Hockey fans on the west coast might even fly there to see him play.  I'd fly down to see the Jagr Vegas team play the Sabres.  I have plenty of frequent flyer miles to go to Vegas, so I'd just need tickets to the game and a place to stay.  That sounds a lot cheaper than going to Vancouver, LA/Anaheim, San Jose, and a lot more fun than going to Phoenix's suburbs.
