The worst part is this week you only get to take home 3/5ths of your winnings.

2017-06-18 07:28:11 AM

If you read the article, the racists are the people who assumed that just because women were black they were slaves rather than tour guides at a historical site that didn't hire people to play slaves but also didn't discriminate against having black tour guides.

Whoopsie - People obsessed with social justice were so strident they missed their own racism. Slow your roll, morans.

Using a plantation manor as a symbol of Southern Charm is like showing a concentration camp commandant's house as German Charm.

The slave re-enactors don't make it any worse.

Also, slaves would never have clothes that nice, not even house slaves.

Maybe they were the type of slaves who was treated good by their masters. Most slaves were happy. Liberal agitators forget that.

lol biggest mountain out of a molehill of allllll time

F'real though I've got a cuhrazy idea Wheel of Fortune: "Southern Charm" can mean places like Charleston or Nashville or New Orleans or Asheville, maybe don't roll with the patronizing yankeefied idea of what "Southern Charm" means and you won't have people whining about "slaves" in your B-Roll footage

Having been to Oak Alley Plantation (beautiful place, great restaurant on site), those were likely mannequins portraying the typical clothing a slave (pre-Emanicipation) or servant (post-Emancipation) would have worn during their daily duties.  If these people are freaking out over what is literally a historical exhibit, they probably would have swallowed their tongues at what was about 100 feet behind the camera:  Real slave quarters filled with histories of former slaves, chains, shackles and other binding instruments used on slaves, slave masks and Scold's Bridles used to punish slaves that had attempted escape, the typical beddings and accoutrements a slave would have been entitled to (spoiler alert, it's quite depressing), and one particularly interesting story about how the soft-shelled pecan was actually "invented" by a slave that mastered limb grafting to create a new hybrid of pecan with more favorable qualities and was given an award for it in the back half of his life after he was a freed man (his slave master had accepted the award when it was first handed out).

May have had too much tequila myself.

The picture was from 2005. Yeah, it's not great, but don't we have some more important things to get upset about these days than a 12 year old picture on Wheel of Fortune?

If we delete all the photos from the internet that means slavery never happened.

So are people now just assuming that two black women, who appear to be pretty well dressed, in the background of a photo taken in the south are slaves?

2017-06-18 02:52:40 PM
Hillary Loeber, a spokesperson for the Oak Alley Plantation, told the newspaper that the plantation employs tour guides that wear period clothing similar to what was worn by the women in the image.

Loeber also said that the plantation hires people of all skin colors for those roles.

OH MY GOD THE OUTRAGE!

This is what I am talking about when I say "outrage culture". People seem to jack off to being outraged these days

I know, right? Who would assume "slave" when someone is posing in 1850s costume, in front of a house built by slaves, which was staffed by slaves, and was the center of an 1850s work farm which had an large work force of slaves, in a state where virtually every black person was a slave.

What a crazy leap!

Because human slavery should only upset people the same color as the slave?

If I were a Southerner, I'd be pissed that the Wheel Of Fortune people thought a plantation was the perfect example of Southern Charm. It's like if someone used a picture of James Huberty to depict the typical McDonald's customer.

No. Because white people always have to jump in and be offended on behalf of other without bothering to find out if others are actually offended.  They still seem to think that they are the "great white hope" helping out the poor ignorant POC who don't understand what is happening to them.

Yep.  Which is stereotyping when you think about it.  Or bigotry.  Or both.

I don't have to wait to find out if others find something offensive to find it offensive because I have my own morals and am capable of thinking. I don't find building "graciousness" on the suffering of others wrong. Don't you?

Social networking sites need to be shut down, or at least we need to shut down all the "news" sites that cover them.
