you'd think they'd be used to death threats after 8 years of being associated with the "dark one" and the more unhinged among us being fed unadulterated hate.

I am a little surprised that threats aren't a more regular thing for both parties given the way things have been going the last few years. Maybe they are but this kind of thing is being taken more seriously now?

I saw it all. I was having a bite at that little cafe over on Franz Josef and I saw this dude standing nearby. He seemed like anyone else, just looking around like he had nowhere to be. The next thing I know, he takes off across the street, pulls out a gun and shoots that archduke guy whatshisname and his wife as they're driving by. Craziest farking thing. Just a lone gunman, of course, obviously a madman. Terrible tragedy, to be sure, but they caught him right away, so at least that's the end of it.

Take another check from Wall Street and screw with people's livelihoods some more.  I'm sure it won't push those a little more...mercurial...over the edge.

Frankly I'm surprised this didn't begin 3 or 4 years ago.

I have a feeling that if congressional shootings become a somewhat regular occurrence, gun control measures will be passed pretty quickly.

Similar to how we'd probably have much better healthcare in this country if members of congress didn't already have their own single payer system.

/I have a theory most people operate in their own self-interest.
//Also explains why people generally get more conservative over time.

It's almost as if decades of fomenting intense partisanship in talk radio and news, obscuring facts and tailoring the interpretation of events via selective omission to fit the narrative of your political slant didn't turn out so well.

Damn, who could've seen that coming. I'm just going to shoot up this speedball over here. Since it makes me feel good nothing bad can come of it.

I doubt anyone couldn't see this coming.  Someone called yesterday's shooting the "Reichstag Fire" and I replied that it wasn't, but it was going to be a precursor to some nasty shiat.

I blame Ailes, Limbaugh, Hannity, Jones, O'Reilly, et al for creating this hate-filled environment that is ready to explode.

You guys do know that this behavior goes way beyond political ideology, right? Too many Americans are over the top and subject to rage about, well, everything. Fuses have been becoming shorter and shorter for a couple of decades now. And it's not the first time it has happened.

My wife thinks the current iteration is caused by the internet. She may be right.

I was verifying my claims and found that I was wrong.

Congress doesn't have access to a single-payer system (they must go to ACA exchange), but, their employer pays 75% of the cost of a gold level plan on the marketplace, and if ACA is repealed they will go back to FEHBP which is one of the best insurance plans there is.

So who would you believe?

2017-06-15 11:02:59 AM

Weaver95: And so it begins....

In modern memory it began when a guy went into the Capitol to gun down Tom deLay, back in 1998. Two capitol police, John Gibson and Jacob Chestnut, were dead soon after.

The Capitol Visitor Center was the cynically named guard house then created to keep armed lunatics from turning the Capitol into a shooting gallery.  It was one step on the way The separation of church and state is nothing compared to the separation of Congress from the people. Step by step. I hear they now requiring a suzerain pledge to the president, without a reciprocal pledge from the president, I'm sure Congress now has the motivation to up the ante for Congress, too.

I assume making death threats to a politician is a felony?  If we're lucky enough Trump supporters will lose their voting rights in key states this shiat will correct itself in the coming elections.

I agree.  It's far too easy to live in a little bubble online, surrounded by people who say the same things, think the same things, and are fed news by websites (or cable news channels) that pre-digest it into an ideologically-suitable pablum (whatever your ideology may happen to be).  While "diversity" is celebrated in most ways, diversity of political thought is taboo in most circles.

At least "back in the day" when there was one newspaper in town and maybe 2-3 TV networks, we all got the same facts.  Maybe we'd interpret them differently, but there was one uniform "reality" to serve as a starting-point for discussion.  Now we can no-longer even agree on what is real or not -- true or false -- ("alternative facts?").  Consequently, the "other side" seems to be totally detached from reality, and it's hard to relate to or compromise & deal with "crazy people," yet political compromise is exactly what's required in order for a democratic republic to function.

Modeling civil discourse was too much of a side effect to let stand. It would only lead to severe disappointment and violence it it ever ended.

"Did you NOT expect this? When you take away ordinary peoples very lives in order to pay off the wealthiest among us, your own lives are forfeit. Certainly, your souls and morality were lost long before. Good riddance," the email said.

I'm being stone serious here when I say that that's not a threat.  An angry grievance?  Sure.  But the author is only saying he/she thinks they deserve it.  And if they're Republicans, they do.  People have woken up to the fact that the GOP is actively rigging the system to keep wages low and life spans short.  Why shouldn't those that suffer under such policies wish death upon their oppressors?

GOP Congressperson gets called out on bullshiat, claims it's a threat.  By next week the GOP will be trying to have critics arrested because all criticisms are really just veiled calls for revolutionary violence.

This is why literally no one feels sorry for the GOP given what happened--all the Republicans together literally can't scrape up a single good deed between them across the past 30 years.
