So it's nothing to do with the price per barrel being at a 15-year high?

It's because of the attack on a Saudi oil co office a week or so back, Iraq, OPEC saying they're going to cut production and then not, and possibly Bandar Bush's promise to help his old mate George.

"I just paid $2.20 per gal for gas. If this was a war for oil, how come we still have to pay for it?"

I simply cannot believe that people are still mouthing this one.

The US hasn't paid its UN dues for years, and owes a billion or so.

So if we don't pay our dues, will they cancel our membership. I hope so. What a completely worthless organization.

I'm straining myself to come up with a few positive things that the UN has ever done for the planet......Thinking.... thinking.... thinking.

Nope, I can't come up with anything...

I don't hate MMG, I feel sorry for him and his tiny little nazi mind.

Unlike many leftists, at least my mind wasn't bummed out by the capture of Saddam. And also unlike some of the DU crowd, I've never called for the deaths of more American soldiers so that my president wouldn't get re-elected.

It's pretty clear who really has sick, twisted little nazi minds.

Send the little crumb snatchers off to Gitmo.

Oh, and introduce OBL to the wonders of modern interrogation techniques courtesy of the CIA.

Pippo, it might have something to do with the things you were talking about. I don't honestly know. Like I said, the source of the info I got was unverified and I didn't know if it was true or not.

Who knows, maybe it's both things that is driving the price of gas up. I know Michigan's governor just raised our gas tax here.

re: UN Dues

You are correct, however there is a reason for that. I think the US justification is that we pay the lion's share of aid to UN supported countries, why should we do that and pay the dues. When the financial aid is acquired equally from members, then I would consider our decision not to pay dues unfair.

MMG

This is a fairly long thread now, and still I haven't seen any of these "many" liberals advocating the death of US soldiers (for any reason).

If people hold those thoughts you mentioned, I agree, they're sick. However, you're just waving around a straw man.

OTOH, I see lots of sick farks saying "turn the whole country into glass" and "kill them all". And that is just in this thread.

Go figure.

Colonel Bat Guano:- well, Nicaragua and El Salvador come to mind. Somalia of course. I'd have to look up others. They're doing aid work and mine clearing etc. in all kinds of countries at the moment. Don't believe everything your media says.

Just because there are big chunks of serious corruption at the moment doesn't mean you can erase their history.

Here are some numbers (in millions of USD for 2003) on Official Development Assistance (ODA) as reported by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD):

United States - $15,791 absolute, 0.14% of GDP
Canada - $2,209 absolute, 0.26% of GDP
Norway - $2,043 absolute, 0.92% of GDP
France - $7,337 absolute, 0.41% of GDP
Spain - $2,030 absolute, 0.25% of GDP
Germany - $6,694 absolute, 0.28% of GDP
United Kingdom - $6,166, 0.34% of GDP
Japan - $8,911, 0.20% of GDP

For 2003, the United States was the largest donor in absolute dollar terms. Norway was the largest donor as a percentage of GDP. Interestingly enough, Japan was the largest donor in absolute dollar terms from 1992 through 2000.

"I just paid $2.20 per gal for gas. If this was a war for oil, how come we still have to pay for it?"

Because we're not one of those evil statist, socialist governments of Europe. But it's a nice thought, I could use some free gasoline paid for with blood.

"Hey JimBob, what kinda mileage does your SUV get?"
"1000 miles per American soldier, or 200 miles per raghead, depending on whether you use English or metric. But they don't really count."

Yea just like there were no children on those planes that hit the WTC/Pentagon/field. Just like there were no children at Kobar Towers. Just like there were no children at the Jordan embassy.
You are an asshat. I hope you children do NOT get killed by terrorist that you want to protect.

Thank You! I was about to say the same thing. I'm starting to wonder how old fisherman26 is, considering he only uses the phrase 'right wingers' in everything and seems to thing they're they cause of all the world's problems. Just another asshat who doesn't seem to understand that war doesn't mean only soldiers die. Everyone is involved and everyone is a potential victim. I'm so sick of lefties and righties blaming the other side for what happens. This country is in a war whether you like it or not.

If you ignore the actions of the WHO, UNICEF, peacekeeping missions across the globe, conflict negotiation, relative success of the Convention on Chemical Weapons, Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and so on I guess they've done nothing.

Ohh sorry, you were thinking of things that benefit only the US, well the International Monetary Fund has been instrumental in preventing nationalization of resources/industries by left-leaning governments. Also the WTO has prtty much made the rape of native people and theft of resources acceptable.

How 'bout promoting democracy through democracy, instead of the barrel of a gun? Before the UN, Europe was a battleground. Now they are working to build a union of confederated states.

Don't forget what made America strong. Freedom and democracy. Those ideals have spread throughout the globe with the help of the UN.

Refresh my memory, what's the U.S.'s reason for being in Iraq this week?

2004-05-20 01:18:02 PM
This is nothing new. This is what it's said in every story about this all along. US officials say it's a safehouse, Iraqis say it was a wedding. Either way, it's quite blow'd up and most everybody there is dead now.

2004-05-20 01:18:13 PM
CBG,

Enforcing their own resolutions wasn't the arguement. It was whether or not the UN is an effective global body. It is clear that it is, and that we should continue to develop it for the greater good of all. Part of this will require that members pay their dues on time, and abide by the decisions of the group.

If somebody would throw a pie in the face of Michael Moore and then beat him to a jelly, I promise not to say anything about liberals/democrats/leftists ever again.

It'd take a lot more then a pie to shut his pie hole. Like what my football coach says about really fat people, "looks like he hasn't missed too many meals."

then beat him to a jelly

And I'll bet the jelly he's beat to will be purple like the kind in jelly doughnuts.

Simple minded thinking. When the government wants to control the oil reserves, it isn't doing it for the best interests of you, the citizen, but rather the executive and investor who all want to make outrageous amounts of money

As with most wartime propaganda, the truth probably lies somewhere inbetween the two versions of this event that we are hearing.

So my guess would be that we fired on a bunch of foreign terrorists in the middle of their wedding party.

Hey, terrorists get married, too.

2004-05-20 01:25:05 PM
Also, if anyone has rendered the UN useless, it's Bush. After the cold war, the US had a HUGE opportunity to LEAD the world into democracy through leadership in the UN. Bush's arrogant unilateralism and disregard of the UN has left it impotent, and nearly a century of work by the US to spread our democratic ideals though democratic institutions like the UN has been flushed down the shiatter.

Ummm. OK. A well-constructed bomb might blow someone to pieces at the point of impact, but around the impact radius, any number of grisly things could happen to you. For instance, a piece of concrete could whiz by and, I don't know, take off your head or something.
