Sorry, but eating meat and meat-based products are the only surefire way to keep smug levels from building in your body to the point of veganism.

I have a niece who's a Vegan and expects everyone to not only know this but prepare special meals for her. There was an epic Thanksgiving fight over it last year. Mom had fish but niece didn't like fish. Well, all she eats is fish but that day, no. So she's very particluar about beign vegan and how her food is prpeared.

Fark: she doesn't cook.

Vegans don't eat fish.  They don't eat milk or egg products either.  Some are so extreme they won't even eat honey because it comes from an animal.

Or red wine because they use fish byproducts in the clearing process and can't guarantee no bugs made it in to the juice.

I once dated a girl whose brother was a self-declared "flexitarian."  Which apparently means that he's a vegan, but only when doing so wasn't too much of an inconvenience.  When I heard about this I rolled my eyes so hard it's a wonder I wasn't flung out of my chair by the momentum.  All of the sanctimony, none of the sacrifice.

"If someone's going to the effort to mindfully change their lifestyle, they've probably done a lot of homework on it before even reaching the table."

That's never been true in my experience. Most of them made the decision based on nothing more than one bs article they read on the internet or a an off hand remark made by a friend.

It's kind of like this whole gluten free craze. A couple celebrities decided that because a small percentage of people can't tolerate gluten that it must be bad for you. Suddenly everyone is jumping on board not knowing the first damn thing about it.

Or it's equally possible they're just diving into a fad because they think it's the cool thing to do. I wonder what the amount of time is that most "vegans" actually stick with it. I'd be willing to bet that going vegan has a pretty high failure rate.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I read somewhere that a Jain would eat meat if offered it. The animal has already been killed and prepared. Not eating it and allowing it to go to waste was a greater offense.

Or something like that. I was probably drunk at the time researching whether or not bourbon is gluten free. Conclusion: don't care. Just wanted bourbon.

I don't know what the hell a Jain is, I do know that vegans that think they're making a difference in animals lives, farm or otherwise, by being vegan, are delusional.

That farmer that sold 100 cattle last year isn't going to sell 99 this year if I turned vegan. It doesn't work that way.

i remember going to a ringling brothers circus protest and a  seaworld protest 10+ years ago with vegan friends who would attend these protests year after year month after month week after week.  One cannot deny that they made a difference.  ringling is no  more and seaworld is dying a bit more everyday.  and the world is a better place for it.

you are absolutely wrong if you dont think one person's passion can make a difference.  even when it comes to cow consumption in a world of carnivores.  It DOES work that way.  To say it does not is foolish.

cow consumption would probably drop significantly if people were allowed to tour slaughterhouses or have access to the process of delivering steak to your table.

Jains are the Hindu sect that are so vegan they have a broom to brush in front of them so as not to step on insects, fig class plants, and potatoes, onion, or garlic.

They are 20th level Vegans. I don't think they eat things that have shadows either.

I'm not talking about the circus or aquariums but regardless I agree and disagree. Participating in protests can change things, sure. Just turning vegan does not.

My ex-wifes friend went vegan. She doesn't protest or support causes. She just simply eats a vegan diet. How is she helping? Those are the people I'm talking about which is likely the vast majority of vegans.

And there are plenty of activist videos that have been online for years showing slaughterhouse conditions and the process. Anyone in the world can see what goes on at those places. Hasn't changed a thing.

My point is, simply proclaiming yourself a vegan and doing nothing else but claiming you're helping is BS.

Late addition, long day. As someone who has been on doctor ordered highly restrictive diets a couple times and having several foods that can kill me I have zero patience for those who choose to limit their diet to such levels and then biatch when I don't cate to their choice. I have no choice and just want to know what to avoid, and never expect special treatment. I can go get food elsewhere late if I am still hungry, won't starve.
