(CNN)   I would think that a bug that likes biting humans around their lips and faces as they sleep and then defecates into the wound with feces that harbor an infectious parasite that causes heart disease would have a scarier laymen name than "kissing bug"   ( cnn.com) divider line

Would you prefer it be called "the pooping bug"?
We already have the dung beetle, so that name is kind of taken.

Reduviidae are f#cking jerks. You've got kissing bugs that bite you and then take a shiat on the wound. You've got assassin bugs that camouflage themselves by dressing up in the dessicated corpses of their prey. Their bites are painful as all get-out (what with the injecting of enzymes evolved to liquify prey from the inside, out). Yeah, some are good at killing roaches and other pests, but then you get to worry about one of these assholes impaling their rostrum into you if you look at them funny:

Also, some of their bites take months to heal / stop hurting like crazy.

/why yes, I have run afoul of these little bastards, why do you ask?

Oh I've heard of that.  But it's not the heart disease that usually kills a person.  The parasite attacks the muscles that move food through the digestive system.  Many die from having too much food in their bowels, completely unable to eliminate it from their bodies.

So literally full of shiat, unlike most of us who are only figuratively full of shiat.

Well, gee, thanks for that mental image.

/also, neither the headline nor the (beginning of the article) talk about why it bites in the first place. It can't just be out of spite.

What eats them?   They look too large for diatomaceous earth to kill them quickly.

They're not a problem this far north atm.  I just want tp be prepared.  Pet gecko? Cats?

Great, Chagas presents like flu, seems to go away, and then slowly destroys your heart.

I've been to the tropics, stayed in substandard housing, and had the flu. I guess I'm a goner.

Get back to us after you have an upper GI radiograph with small bowel follow thru.

You get to enjoy your 'milkshake' twice!

CSB:  Hit on radiology nurse after my series, inviting her for a hamburger.  She smirked and said "You go enjoy your burger."  Biatch knew what was about to happen.
