Mexico exported 1.1 tonnes of sugar to the United States in 2016, according to government figures.

That's it? I'm pretty sure my local Costco has a ton of sugar on hand

Imma root for Mexico on this one. I'd rather have cheap cane sugar than corn syrup.

I buy maybe 1 lb of sugar a year.  Costs something like $1.16 (had to buy brown sugar today).  If the price goes up 35% that's maybe $0.40 per year.  I'm thinking I can deal with that.

/ don't eat processed foods
// nor drink sodas
/// so unless sugar is in my drugs I don't really need to care

ADM bought Nixon and got him to set a protective sugar policy to make their new corn syrup seem cheap.

Most of his works have proven to be mistakes and yet we can't dismantle them.

Do we even grow sugar crops anymore in the US? Either cane or beets.

I guess we could go to Jamaica, Cuba or Puerto Rico

If you bake you will buy a lot of sugar in a year (bread, cakes, cookies mostly). Last year I probably went through at least 10 lbs and maybe 15 lbs of cane sugar (but I do give away about half of what I bake) and don't use it for anything else. I can't remember the last time I drank a soda, if I want a sweet drink I'll have juice instead. Not because I dislike soda but because the frozen can of concentrate weighs a lot less and takes up a lot less refrigerator space than a case of soda.

We can. The desire to vote along those lines is not high enough to dismantle the two political parties, which is what it would take. They are currently in the business of telemarketing lobbyists, and as long as federal elections use anything but public money for funding that isn't going to change and we are stuck in our Nixonian world.

Besides, cocaine comes from South America, not Mexico

So corn farmers, who are subsidized by the U.S. government, are upset that Mexican sugar growers are subsidized by the Mexican government?

Being an American, this makes total sense.
