Then promptly die of a heroin OD, because if the artist was still alive that artwork would be worth approximately nothing.

It's a good piece, I'll give it that. I'd pay $20 (with shipping) for a poster of it.

It really is incredible the kind of things we place a high value on. I do think art has value and can often be too expensive for middlebrow schlubs like me, but this kind of price well and truly ghasts my flabber.

"I almost had to pinch myself to see if I was awake," said Larry Warsh, a longtime Basquiat collector.

I almost had to pinch myself too.  Unbelievable.

"I applaud the compulsion of someone to buy such an iconic and important work."

P.T. Barnum would have applauded too.

All art is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

/or whatever you can fool the insurance adjuster into believing.

I would totally buy a poster of this piece if I could find it.  That being said, I understand that buying art really isn't about the content of the piece itself, etc., but even I'm scratching my head at this a bit.  For that amount of money you could commission someone to do something much more grandiose.

Ah well, it's cool looking and it's not my money.

/still want a poster though.

Basquiat has been an overrated hack his entire life and death.

I'll never understand why his sophomoric garbage is considered good.  Literally any art student in grad school could do better.

Here's another one of his shiatty works of "art".

If you wanted to spend that kind of money so you can have a shiatty painting.  Just have a kid and keep the crap they scribble out when they are in kindergarten.
Then you can at least have someone to be disappointed in when you get old.

The secret to making money as an artist is to be the heirs of an artist that died.

/Extra $$$ if death was untimely.

FTA:  "Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Basquiat died at just 27 of a heroin overdose, leaving a large body of work in his trade mark frenetic, expressive style."

So how incredibly hipster is it to spend real money on garbage?
"A fool and his money are soon parted."

There's no accounting for taste. Which in this situation is bad.

I think I've seen similar works from the kindergarten down the street.

Csb time Cola once visited the Milwaukee Museum of Modern Art. Took pictures, because I didn't know you couldn't. Later, back home from the trip, I showed them to a friend. We both agreed that the junior high school art exhibition at the Museum beat the hell out of these so-called modern works of "art."

Your kid is the next Basquiat. I would save that. It is clear that he was channeling his unconscious. Some people can see that sort of thing others can't. Eye of the beholder
