I concede you were right, I meant Taliban, thought Taliban, but saw Al-Qaeda :P

I will say that there weren't many Stingers in Afghanistan (after a deeper search), but they were being employed by Taliban fighters: FoxNews Search

Um, those cluster bomblets? They found those in Colorado. You see, our military had misplaced them. And yes, they were full of Sarin. Whoops.

Look, you're a reasonable guy. Go do a little research on how hard it is to design a missile warhead that can actually disperse a chemical or a bioagent over a wide area. The old warheads he had would not have actually caused more deaths using Sarin than with a high explosive. The reason that the US and other countries agreed (mostly) to stop using such weapons was not becaus of their potential to cause death but because A) they made aiding the wounded a dangerous proposition in and of itself and B)the method of death from these weapons is truly horrible.

North Korea also lacks the facility to disperse chemical or bioagents in a fashion that would cause thousands of fatalities. In fact, a nuclear bomb is the easiest WMD to build, and Iraq wasn't anywhere close to that.

To date, we have no good evidence (publicly admitted, anyway) of any deliberately concealed Iraqi WMD.

Today's announcement doesn't change that fact.

Lars very informative thank you. I had suspected that the Japanese for years had been plotting against us.

as far as the link to the site explaining about the effects of Sarin, I checked out VX link and this shiat looks a lot more dangerous especially if Russia has some lying around and they can't even keep track of nukes in the breakaway states. And speaking of nukes, remember the story a while back about how a 12 year old boy was able to make a mini nuclear reactor using the rhodium(?) from smoke detectors that he had collected and irradiated his entire neighborhood?
What is to keep the terrorists from running down to the local Wal-Mart and stocking up on detectors

I'm curious. How do they know the shell was Iraqi in origin? Couldn't it have been a munition that came from Iran, Syria, Jordan, Russia, or Pakistan....or just about anywhere in fact and been transported into Iraq to use as an improvised munition. Seems like "jumping to a conclusion" when there isn't definite proof.

2004-05-17 05:59:37 PM
Fails to qualify as a WMD.

Next.

That will not be far off. Of course, I think we'll just let you stay asleep.

As an aside, I think this is the greatest nation ever...think about it: These idiots can't count to 11 without dropping their pants, and yet they have enough dough for PCs and internet. In other countries, that type is left out to die of exposure in infancy.

2004-05-17 06:02:28 PM
Is there a reasonable definition of what is and isn't a WMD? I think the term has been spun and abused. I suspect it might not really mean anything anymore. For example, I recall reading where Richard Reid was charged with attempting to use his explosive-filled sneakers as a WMD. Gimme a break.

I'm confident that a missle with multiple 20-megaton nuclear warheads is a WMD. But I'm not sure a howitzer shell is.

I think defining "WMD" by how many people a weapon can kill isn't necessarily the best approach. Because then it depends a lot on where or how the weapon is used. Remember Great White? A flash-pot is not a WMD, but can be deadly. Same with a gallon of gasoline.

If giving 2 people a bad headache qualifies as "Mass Destruction" then - Mission Accomplished...

If Saddam had it, it probably is American in design. 155mm sounds an awful lot like a NATO Self Propelled Gun.

The mere fact that you think "finding WMDs" are the most contentious issue on the planet today speaks volumes of your worldliness, or lack of.

2004-05-17 06:04:27 PM
So now that one diddly little nothing was found, all the Repubs now move the war's justification back to "Imminent threat from WMDs!" from this past year's "Save the Iraqi people!"

Man, doesn't it get tired shifting your brain to fit any and all facts into a predetermined conclusion?

Apparently a Fark flame war constitutes a WMD in at least three countries, too.

to all the naysayers, i have this: [begin sarcasm] yeah, i'm sure that they had just ONE bomb with gas in it, cause, well that would make sense. ya know, especially when you're fighting the superpower of the world, having only ONE nerve gas weapon would asbsolutley do the job [end sarcasm]

Oh, I never called you stupid. You were the one throwing out insults remember? I merely pointed out that I loved your wild speculation and conspiracy theories and intend to use them as the basis for my next RPG conspiracy game plot. You then insulted my intelligence for not believing your rants on the subject. Pure Art Bell gold!

Rant on, just don't expect anyone else to take you seriously. I'd also suggest you not get too upset if nobody believes you - THEY are obviously in on The Plot.

And your argument seems to imply a secular, brutal nation is better than a theocratic, brutal nation. I see no difference.

You see no difference? In case you haven't noticed, this whole affair has nothing to do with spreading American democracy and sunshine. That's just lip service paid to the flag wavers. The realiy is we routinely betray our ideals and commitments whenever they politically suit us. We HAVE done good business with dictatorships in the past and we will continue to do so again. We do business with China, we installed Augusto Pinochet in Chile and while we may have feared Soviet power, we still respected it. So yes, I WOULD argue that a brutal secular regime is more preferable to a theocratic one. Religion is an extremely unbalancing element to any relationship and only heightens the risk of irrational behavior. What other element could encourage people to send out their young to blow themselves up for the promise of heaven? We CAN live with dictatorships...and we will continue to do so.

LittleCamel

None of this matters. Iraq signed an 'end of hostilities' statement in 1991 after they lost a war which they started by invading their neighbor. These other nations haven't signed a proviso saying that they would get rid of these weapons with complete inspections to verify their claims in order to end a war.

No wonder liberals don't understand this stuff...they don't know wtf holding to an agreement is. We'll, it's this: Saddam *and* yourself get your asses handed to you.

liberals = pwned

Holding to an agreement? How it amuses me when conservatives believe they have some sort of monopoly on reality. Getting back to my earlier point, we ourselves(the US) violate agreements on a routine basis when it's no longer politically agreeable. And that's a "conservative" idea MR. CONSERVATIVE. It belongs to the realist school of international poltics that argues nation states will look out for their own interest above all else...regardless of treaties or agreements. You highlight your own hypocrisy by rooting for a group that ignores the international framework and agreements of the United Nations, yet you cower back onto negotiated "agreements" when they suit your purpose.

2004-05-17 06:05:47 PM
Then again, I suppose for the people who made the loss of two million jobs into an "economic recovery", turning this into the WMD threat is a piece of double-think cake.

It just occured to me:

1. Terrorists are nuts-True.
2. Terrorists are evil-True.
3. They are not afriad to die-True.
4. They want ALL of us to die-True.
5. If they had access to WMD's capable of killing very large numbers of us (they don't care if they kill themselves because they will see Allah with 97 vigins) they would have used them by now-True.
6. Based on the fact that they have not used any type of WMD or Nuclear weapon probably means that they don't have any to use...because wow...would they love to use them-True.

7. I need a vacation-True.
