Mars championed the North American Vexillological Association'sprinciples of good flags: they should be simple enough for a child to draw from memory; use three or fewercolors; and never, ever have any lettering or seals.

Sounds like a bunch of party poopers, to me.

Never thought about it like that.
I guess it could double as the Mayor's personal flag as well.
On the plus side it's not been goatse'd yet.

Yet.

Counterpoint: Flags designed by committees should have one unique element that each committee member can point out and explain why they felt it had to be included.

Orlando is in a process of updating our city flag. The current one has a lot of illustration and a font that was trendy in the 90s I guess.
The city council put up a website for people to submit designs and vote for their favorite.
The council included the "vexillological principles" already mentioned in this thread.
But the voters' favorite, so far, is another trendy design that violates the principles.  It includes the letter "O" in a trendy font and other features that are too complicated for a child to draw.

It's worth mentioning, Pocatello is trying to design a new flag. Let this be a lesson; shaming municipalities occasionally works.

debug: Why do we even have city flags?

Identity!
Easiest example I can come up with:  Say St. Paul goes to war with Minneapolis.  You've gotten separated from your unit.  You have no map, compass, GPS, and you don't know which side of the river you're on.
You need to know whether you're approaching friendlies or enemy forces.

This might one day be applied further east:
Brooklyn
www.crwflags.com

Bronx
www.crwflags.com

Queens
www.crwflags.com

All of which violate most of the design rules.

Designer here, it's not that bad, like most atrocities a few small tweaks do a world of difference. For starters it really should only be hung vertically if they can help it, and ditch the seal. Always, always, ditch the seal, unless it's a canton

I love me some flags.  Had I been a physicist (aka Dr. Cooper) I might have produced my own "fun with flags"

One of my favorites below.
Unofficial flag of Digby Neck, Nova Scotia.
Good design, represents the geographical features of the area.

Here's the Google satellite view of the area.
From east to west is Digby Neck, Long Island, and Briar Island.

Your opinion has been noted and flagged invalid.  It hits all the North American Vexillological Association Flag Design Principles:

1.  Keep it simple - The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.

2.  Use meaningful symbolism. The flag's images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.

The large blue triangle represents Ohio's hills and valleys, and the stripes represent roads and waterways. The 13 stars grouped about the circle represent the original states of the union; the 4 stars added to the peak of the triangle symbolize that Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the union. The white circle with its red center not only represents the "O" in Ohio, but also suggests Ohio's famous nickname, "The Buckeye State."

3.  Use 2 or 3 basic colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three which contrast well and come from the standard color set.

4.  No lettering or seals.  Never use writing on any kind or an organization's seal

5.  Be distinctive or be related.  Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.
