A Ponzi scheme? In Utah? I don't believe it.

/the SEC and FBI investigate more cases of affinity fraud in Utah than any other place. So many grifters and thieves use church connections to steal money from people that basically invented the prosperity doctrine. I believe it.

You don't go from "I won't seek reelection" to "I won't finish my term out" unless something's about to hit you hard, and especially in the space of two or three days.

Maybe it's to do with Russia or not.  Whatever it is, though, spooked the everloving shiat out of him.

You guys and your rumor mills. I have it on very good authority that Chaffetz is retiring from the House to launch an acting career - taking the leading role in a Leave it to Beaver sequel series called "Don't Be So Hard on the Beaver".

The casting is uncanny.

while rumors are rumors and shouldn't ever be relied upon for any sort of explanations....its VERY out of character for a power mad, money grubbing bottom feeder like chaffetz to up and announce out of the blue that he might not even finish out his current term, not to mention that he apparently now isn't running for re-election either.

hmm.  almost makes me wanna start believing in conspiracy theories!

fair point, and well made at that.  But....you have to admit, this move is out of character for Chaffetz.  i'm not saying the rumors are true mind you, *all* i am saying is that Chaffetz does not strike me as the sort of person to give up a cushy government job without a very compelling reason to do so.  what that reason is, I can't say....but i'm curious to find out.

There's the adage of not attributing to malice that which can be explained with incompetence but, it certainly does seem that all of the people in our government who should be interested in investigating the Trump/Russia link aren't interested in doing such investigations.  Sadly, You'd like to think it's because they are playing for their party.  That still may be malicious (un-American and treasonous too) but, I'd certainly prefer that to the concept that the ties go much deeper and to many more people in positions of power.

The one consistent trait about Chaffetz is he's always looking to the next rung on the ladder. Investigating Hillary was a really solid way to raise his profile and propel his political career.  Investigating Trump will only anger a chunk of the GOP base. At  same time, Trump is so blatant in his corruption that not investigating DJT will get Chaffetz voted out of office, especially if Evan McMullin runs against him in a primary.

Instead, Chaffetz sidesteps his oversight duties. He will accept a politically acceptable job (rumored to be a gig with Fox News). He keeps his face in the public bashing Dems for a few years, all while ignoring Trump. When time is right, he runs for Senate or Presidency.

Yes, they do.  At all times except bathing/swimming.  And they are extra vigilant because 'you're more susceptible to do it influence in/under water.'

No way. If he's embroiled in the Russian thing through his benefactors at Nu Skin, he's turning (state's evidence.)

The one thing we know for certain about Jason Chaffetz is that he's a craven asshole who's going to, first and foremost, look out for Jason Chaffetz's best interest. The rule of thumb is that the first people to turn get a better deal and he's such a weasel that he'd just as soon rat out the others and hope for some sort of leniency.

Personally, I'm hoping sex scandal simply because the whole myth of the dedicated, conservative, family man needs to have the curtain pulled back on it and the occupants kicked in the balls. But either reason would be aces.

well, that and covering his ass should something go wrong.  he's really good at finding ways to deflect blame for his own mistakes onto other people.

so what we've got here is a guy with a well established track record of being a spineless greedy jerk who always looks to advance himself that suddenly and for no reason anyone can figure, decided to wake up and just quit his cushy well paying job where he's the boss and is largely permitted to steal anything not nailed down....and he'll never be held accountable for his actions.  this is his DREAM job, and he's just giving it up all sudden like?

As much as I'd like what's coming down the pike re: Chaffetz to be a sex scandal for the very reasons you stated, I'd prefer he be a traitor and turn states evidence. It'll help kick the "Republicans and Trump sold America out to Russia for personal gain" shiatshow into high gear. The president is a traitor; he is surrounded by traitors. They all need to swing for it, and the sooner it happens, the sooner we can begin to repair the damage these assholes have done to this country both domestically and on the international stage. My fondest wish is to see Trump, Pence, Sessions, Ryan, McConnell and the rest of the treasonous cabal frogmarched in handcuffs.
