Concern troll.  These tools are always thinking up new ways to say "You libtards are meanies.  Just shut up and take it or we'll vote for Trump again.  So there nyah."

Ain't happening.

Trump's solid basis of support is relatively homogeneous. It is fed up with foreigners, with foreign entanglements and with the political class as a whole.

They are mostly just scared  people. Otherwise they wouldn't be cheering so hard for his cabinet full of the political class and rooting for an unwinnable war in Korea.

"A substantive, centrist response to Trump has a chance of releasing his hold on the GOP and the country. A sneering, dismissive, dehumanizing, conspiratorial, hard-left-leaning response to Trump is his fondest hope."

Yet another idiot refusing to admit that there is nothing normal about what is going on.  The car's already over the cliff, and you're a sh*tty backseat driver anyhow.

President Bannon will handle it.

Stop sneering at Comrade Combover?

Yeah, that'll happen.

Trump is dangerously unfit to be president by every metric and is corrupt AF as well.

These facts cannot be over emphasized whether conveyed through late night comedy shows, straight news pieces or snarky internet commentary.

There is no nice way to put this. Trump sucks by every available metric.

Concern duly noted though, opinion writing guy.

A dialogue, in one act:

Wow, seems like right-wing authoritarians have been doing really well recently by playing to people's fears and resentments. Gosh. How can we counter that, mister Very Serious Person?

"Well, the same way demagoguery is always defeated, of course -- by substantive academic dialogue on the macroeconomic implications of the demagogue's policy platform!"

How can we do that? It sure seems they like to shout a lot about how awful we are, and they're winning. Maybe we should shout some too.

"Why, no, it's simple. If liberals just patiently sit down and explain that the naturally imbalanced baseline ratio of return-on-capital to GDP growth results in the national Gini coefficient trending asymptotically towards 1 absent the ameliorating effects of transfer payments, then by golly we're sure to convince the heartland to take off its red MAGA hats and start raising the red banner of international socialism."

You know, that makes a lot of sense! Thank you, Very Serious Person! You're the best!

"Ugh. I should hardly think such unseemly displays of emotion would be effective on a political level."

I disagree with this idea. Sensible Americans must point out that almost half of the voters chose an awful person to be president that will likely make their lives worse. If they are reminded enough, perhaps they will crawl back under their rocks and stay home next election since they obviously can't trust themselves to be decent judges of character. They were told by both political parties that he would be a bad president and they voted for him anyway. They should be reminded of this everyday.

They won't see whatever war Trump gets as 'foreign entanglements'. It'll be viewed as 'showing them who's boss'. Entanglements are things like NATO, the UN, Paris Climate Agreement, or any kind of foreign aid.

For my money, it doesn't get much more entangled than "colluded with hostile foreign government to undermine the election and enact every policy that benefits them with all the subtly and spy craft savvy of an angry, blind moose."

But hey, they think Putin is strong and powerful and decisive and makes them feel funny with no shirt on, and Trump hates all the right people domestically, so they roll with it.

I've always been a little unclear as to why I'm always being admonished not to sneer at conservatives and yet, no one ever admonishes them not to sneer at me despite the fact that their entire political movement is built on sneering at others.

When the article started criticizing Samantha Bee, I was reminded of when Jon Stewart went on Crossfire and in response to criticism reminded the hosts that they are journalists and that his show comes on after the show where puppets make prank phone calls.

You and me both.

2017-04-21 07:46:08 AM
The sneering liberal late-night shows serve several purposes.

1) The Late Night shows aren't afraid to call bullshiat, while journalists have to treat every claim equal and at face value. Unlike journalists, the Late Night shows don't fear access, and can say what they want.

2) Which is effective. Trump soured on Bannon because of an SNL skit where Bannon got to sit in the President's chair and Trump was forced to sit in a kid's chair. Sean Spicer being portrayed by a woman also really hurt his relationship with Spicer. Authoritarians hate being mocked, and Trump in particular is incredibly thin skinned.

3) They serve as a balm to liberals. Having someone saying "Can you BELIEVE these idiots?" and making us laugh helps us get through.

If conservatives are acting based on what comedians are saying about them, then the problem isn't the comedians. I'm not going to change my behavior based on what Hannity or Steve Dousey says..

Maybe conservatives shoudln't be such snowflakes.

For all the "Just try to understand them" articles aimed at liberals to sympathize with Trump voters, I've yet to see an article aimed at conservatives to sympathize with liberals.

It's weaponizing the liberal's desire to be considerate and empathic. "You're wrong on this issue." "You just don't UNDERSTAND me." "Gee, maybe you're right..."

The MAGA cult is beyond reason.  They are dead to me and I'll not wasting any time or concern on them.  The non-voters, Johnson/Stein voters, newly eligle voters, and even the reluctant Trump voters, those are the people who may be reached with reason.

That's why, for similar reasons, jeering and booing at congressional town halls doesn't work. Surely those GOP moderates in competitive House districts opposed Trumpcare out of personal morality, not because of any potential loss of constituent votes.

So just sit back, shut up and watch everything good get torn up and taken away, and try harder to understand the assholes who are doing it.
