Yeah, we got one. Milwaukee's very own "Bay View Prius Lady" has a tribute fb page. She's a dotty old septuagenarian who's known and loved by thousands of Milwaukeeans who've encountered her downtown or near South Shore Park.

Probably shouldn't say "loved". Mostly it's a weird mixture of amusement, being appalled, and the worry that she's going to kill someone some day.

Sounds like she's a chronic drunk driver. Functional drunk, with enough motor skill to avoid an accident (most of the time), but doing incoherent shiat like not pulling into the left turn lane to make a left turn. She's probably very seasoned with a high tolerance - I bet she's driving around at three times the legal limit.

Can't rule out good old fashioned undiagnosed/untreated mental illness either.  Always a party favourite around here.

Please, folks, when it starts getting dark, turn on your frakking headlights. And don't confuse your daytime running lights for actual headlights, as your taillights stay off.

You know, at some point you just have to say "You can't do that anymore.  No more driving for you".  The worst accident I have seen was from someone who stopped in the middle of the road to avoid hitting a goose.  Someone else swerved to avoid them and knocked themselves and another car into oncoming traffic.  Four vehicles in head on collisions.

Geese are assholes anyway.

Here in DC most commuters on the freeway drive with full lights on all the time. You want to be seen, as everybody is constantly merging and switching lanes and trying to kill you. My windows are tinted and it's hard to see people without headlights when the majority have their lights on (during the day).

When I was learning to drive, one of my friend's grandmother was "that chick".

Eventually she backed into a small pickup truck parked behind her car with enough force to wedge it between a tree and a telephone pole without noticing she had done so. She just merrily drove off to the liquor store while the dude who owned the truck looked on with horror.

At that point her family decided that hurt feelings be damned, it was time to take the car away.

I've started noticing a number of tarmac colored cars driving with no lights on. I've nearly hit two of them. I just don't get it. Unless they're intending to commit insurance fraud.

Dad at age 89 once passed out in the car. Fortunately mom was driving at the time. Saved us all a lot of hassle cause dad took it out on the doctor for clipping his wings and was bitter about lising his license til the week he passed away. Mom gave hers up gracefully two years ago at age 94, admitting she just didnt have the vision or the wits for driving anymore. We're more than happy to "drive miss daisy" whenever she needs to get out and do stuff, bless her heart for quitting gracefully...

Actually, not to be Captain Pedantic, but "ripe" is indeed the right word in this context. Rife means for there to be many of something or for something to be common (and usually unpleasant). Example: This lady is rife with driving violations.

You don't get it?  Here you go:  It's just to wind you up.   The color of my car is none of your business.  Whether or not I choose to leave my lights off when legally permitted to do so is none of your business.

As for fraud, if I'm operating my vehicle without headlights within the period starting one half hour before sunrise and ending one half hour after sunset, and visibility is in excess of 1000 feet, and it is not raining; and then if and when you fail to yield to my vehicle and thereby cause an accident, go ahead and cry insurance fraud and see how far it gets you.

You seem to imply that someone stopping to avoid hitting an animal was at fault in that case, when in actuality it was someone who was following too closely and decided to swerve into another car.

Now, if your whole point is that it was a goose and the driver should have sped up instead of braking, I can support that.

Serious question: Are daytime running lights required in the U.S.?
They've been required here in Canada for at least 15 years.
Just wondering.

No. But many vehicles come that way. Ohio requires lights when wipers are in use though.

Nope. GM pushed for it in the early 90s and again in the 2000s, both times the NHTSA told them to fark off.

A lot of cars here come with DRLs, but they are not required.

From Wikipedia

the agency remains neutral with respect to a policy regarding the inclusion of DRLs in vehicles (...) we do not find data that provides a definitive safety benefit that justifies Federal regulation (...) manufacturers should continue to make individual decisions regarding DRLs in their vehicles.

I'm looking into modifying my older cars to have DRLs. Especially in sliver/gray cars it makes them more visible.
One thought is to just modify things to be like older Subarus, the lights went on and off with the ignition so I just left them on. It was always strange the first evening driving after a shop turned them off just used to them being on all the time.
