Not necessarily slavery, but the way they were freed by just dumping them out on the street. It's a pretty unique situation in history.

This is violence once removed against black people aka systemic racism.

The civil war lasted via jim crow until the late 1960s.

Remember this the next time we have a good old fashioned  stand your ground thread or why don't "those people" get some bootstraps.

I wish we could tell and admit the truth about slavery and racism in this country and finally begin some form of practical atonement.

See Germany for an example of what I speak.

Use of prison labor is illegal in many parts of the world. Europe and Australia have laws that say any use of prison labor at any point of manufacture makes importing a product illegal. There are people trying to get Teslas banned in Australia because Musk uses so much prison labor.

The federal government has entrenched prisoner labor. It is codified into law that if prison labor produces a product that the US government needs to buy, there can be no bids or competition and said item must always be purchased from prisons.

More products purchased from prisons, larger breadth or product portfolio, more prisoners needed.

This is sad, of course, but what about the repression of Christians in places like Egypt? Murdered by the score, burnt to death in holy places. Let's not forget the the repression Christians face in Muslim countries, governed by Sharia law, places like Indonesia and Malaysia. East and West there is much suffering faced by those who believe in a God made flesh. We should think about them too and be reminded that suffering is not unique to black folk. White people suffer. Sometimes they suffer a great deal. What about that?

Think of their blond hair in a tumble, their blue eyes crying in the rain, their poor little bodies trembling in fear? What about them? Can't we even take care of our own first? I'm an American - and I believe in "America First".
I don't get to vote in those other countries, nor do I pay taxes in them.
I agree with President Trump, that we Americans should place America first.
So are you disrespecting the President, or just calling him a liar?

Rottherham sex scandal.  1400 British girls trafficked into sex slavery and prostitution over a 15 year period in one city in England by a Muslim gang.. Police refused to intervene because they were afraid to be labeled islamophobic. Maybe the cops were farkers ?

See Germany for an example of what I speak.

The effects lasted into the 21st century.  Companies have been caught redlining as recently as 15 years ago.

And Germany is an interesting parallel.  I wrote a paper in grad school comparing war memorials and monuments between the old Confederacy and the Germans after two world wars.

TL;DR - the Germans got it, especially after WWII.  Their monuments are all styled to reflect the tragedy that was having a large portion of the young population wiped out.  Their go-to is the kneeling soldier, emphasizing loss and sorrow.

Meanwhile, Confederate monuments aren't just about grieving, they're about defiance. There are a few hundred statues in the South where the monument was built, "So Johnny Reb is forever facing north to watch for them damnyankees."  Those monuments try hard to validate their sacrifice as glorious, or honorable.

It's a symptom of the problem of the post-war occupation.  We really should have left national troops and military administration in place for a generation, reshaped the local institutions, and win a war of cultural attrition against the Lost Cause mentality that poisoned the population.  Keep the South from venerating the people who led them to near destruction to protect the planter aristocracy.

/The Union won the war, but lost the reconstruction.

Sickle cell anemia is not directly related to race; it's directly due to malaria. And guess what? Africa, original home of our own species, is also home to many serious diseases, so any mutation that protects against any of them will be favored by evolution. There's a price to be paid: if you have only one copy of the sickle gene, you get health benefits, but if you have two copies you will have endless health problems.

They will not . They do talk about how slavery existed world wide and the difference between a "society with slaves" and a "slave society." America was, like many cultures around the world, a society with slaves up until the mid 1600s, when it became a slave society. The difference is that a society with slaves is just that - a society that happens to also have slavery. Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Asians - they were all like this. Societies with slaves have existed throughout most of history.

But a slave society is one in which slavery is the predominant economic and cultural factor of society. That is what we Americans typically think of when we think of slavery; America from mid 1600s up until the civil war. Nothing like that currently exists in the world.

/IMHO, slavery is wrong in any form.
//Despite being a leftist myself, I do condemn any Islamist for conducting or condoning slavery.
///I also condemn any Christian, Hispanic, Asian, Russian, or anyone else involved with the modern slave trades.

Southern Plantation culture combined with the evangelical "Great Awakening" in the 1700's probably did more damage to America than the Puritans ever did...
