Seeing as there's no way someone gets 50% of the vote, there's going to be a runoff election. And while le Pen's chances look good in a five way race, in a heads up contest? Not the same story.

Voters have a tough choice.

Do they want Le Pen? Or do they want Le Sword?

It's up to them to decide which is mightier.

At least they have a built in run-off, where the electorate can see "oh shiate, that biatch might win"

There's a big difference between Trump and le Pen, the French are familiar with her dad, and she's no different.

Not to mention that they've seen Trump as President and it hasn't been viewed favorably in France and the rest of Europe.

They are. People like her are exactly who they want in power. They want nationalist isolationists rather than friendly globalists in power. ISIS is an apocalyptic death cult. They want a world awash in war. Attacking France? Do it through Belgium to create friction.

Imagine if Al Qaeda had trained their pilots in Mexico, then sent them across the border among illegal immigrants rather than having them mostly enter the US through normal channels. That's the kind of shiat their Europe based fans are attempting to do between France and the Low Countries, trying to stir up serious animosity among the electorate to rift France from the EU.

And it will always work among a certain percentage of the population. Not that it would stop the attacks.

If the head-to-head polls I saw bear out, in the runoff it will be:

Macon > Melenchon > Fillon > Le Pen

Luckily, I doubt it will work among enough of the electorate at the ballot box, but we'll see.

You're right. They look better in a head to head matchup against: a socialist who wants a 100% tax on any earnings over $400k; the guy currently under investigation for funneling over a million dollars of government money to his direct family; or the guy that's so bland no one can honestly say what his politics actually are.

Taxing the rich? OMG better vote for a literal Nazi.
Politician under investigation? OMG better vote for a literal Nazi.
Guy with "unclear" politics (aka nuanced and growned up politics that can't be summarized into a few soundbites such as "tax the riches" or "kick foreigners out")? OMG better vote for a literal Nazi.

If you believe any of this is justification enough to vote for Le Pen, you are a closet nationalist looking for an excuse to vote for the far right.

France has experienced significant immigration from the Maghreb for a long time, and not everybody was happy about it. Then there's the more recent refugee and EU immigration, and of course terror attacks. Race an immigration are touchy subjects there

THAT SAID... France was occupied by the Nazis, and I'm pretty sure that's still recent enough history that they won't vote in an extreme right candidate.

But you're right, who farking knows these days  : (

MORB:

Preaching to the choir; the frogs don't let me vote.

But my point stands, as my feelings don't matter to reality: 2 out of the 3 likely options in a runoff stand a VERY good chance of losing to Le Pen. The socialist has nothing beyond his 100% tax scheme, not even political savvy. He's also a nationalist that loves Russia, BTW, and largely a dark horse candidate. The corrupt one will be lucky to stay out of jail, since he was caught with his wife and kids on the books as state employees when they never did a bit of work for the government. He's currently under a rapidly widening ethics investigation and has dropped precipitously in the polls; even if he wins, he might still go to jail.

I really, really like Macron, and I seriously hope he wins. Politically a centrist, young and good looking to boot. But he is about as spicy as a piece of 3 week old Winn-Dixie brand white bread, and he goes beyond centrism into 'ok, I'm pretty sure that guy doesn't actually have any policies" territory. He stands the best chance in a runoff, I think; I simply have doubts that a such milquetoast and unknown candidate can out-compete a well known and polarizizing politician like Le Pen.

Besides which, the collective French loathing for anything tainted by Mooslims is one of the things the entire nation is farking famous for.

Le Pen is the front runner. We're not quite in "book it done" territory yet, but we are certainly edging towards "this is a foregone conclusion" as we get closer to election day.

Probably literally, Stalin style.

French citizens should be revisiting their airbrush skillset right about now.

Sorry, big cranky about it I guess. Your country being on the verge of potentially making a dangerously retarded decision tends to do that.

I'm also currently in the "can't vote in this election" group. I'm also hoping for Macron, but getting ready for Le Pen.

Marine Le Pen herself paid her ex sister-in-law 296497 euro for a fictitious job as her European Parliament assistant in Brussels and her own personal body guard 41500 euro for the same fictitious job as her European Parliament assistant - according to the European Anti-Fraud Office. Her father got condemned last year for the same type of embezzlement during his term in the European Parliament, for a series of fictitious jobs financing the FN in France.

Her party is also currently in the headlights for fictitious jobs and public money embezzlement involving her campaign director (who was at the same time working for her father in PACA, for her in Nord-Pas-De-Calais and for the city council in Frejus), while she was presiding the FN in Nord-Pas-De-Calais. She also allegedly used public money of her regional position in Nord-Pas-De-Calais to finance her 2012 presidential campaign.
