The guy wanted to die.  He didn't make a huge mess in a house.  He settled the open casket debate.

Make your arguments against suicide, but he wasn't a dick about it.

I used to volunteer with the Red Cross as a disaster action team member. Went to a fire where a guy jammed on of those flexible funnel things down his throat, poured in a bunch of gas, poured the rest all over himself then lit it up.

I cannot imagine a worse way to go.

I've struggled with suicidal ideation myself in the past so I get the whole "despondent and want to die" thought process, but jeeze-oh-pete, WHY would one choose this way to do it?

Yes, he was. He did it on the shoulder of a highway which probably shut down the entire road.

Some people sincerely believe they deserve to suffer horribly and die.  Unfortunate as hell, but it's not an uncommon response with specific severe mental health issues.  People will deliberate choose something seriously messed up - as bad for themselves as they can manage reasonably.

First thought was what was he protesting.

Fark's covered a preacher who protested/died for human decency or whatever it was at the time, by setting himself on fire in front of a courthouse

Csb?

Something like this happened during my first visit to Los Angeles back in 98 (maybe 97). I get to the hotel after flying in and turn on the tv to see a local police chase live. The guy eventually stopped on an overpass and sets himself on fire in the car but he doesn't like it and he gets out and takes his burning pants off. So this guy is naked from the waste down on an overpass after just setting himself on fire and then shoots himself in the head. All in live tv. Welcome to LA.

Well, of course he pulled over. He wouldn't want to get a ticket for driving while inflamed.
