Nice 8-1 homestand for the Yanks.  Now they go back out on the road and we'll see if they can sustain it.

Really?  MLB.com can't bother to print the entire power rankings list for MLB?

I guess after the jizzed in their shorts over the Cubbies again they ran out of enthusiasm for the project.

I generally whine that the Mets are underrated, but in this case they may be overrated.

Their defense is terrible.  They have the worst player in baseball (as per fangraphs WAR) in Jose Reyes.  The pen is overworked and not very good.  They can't find a way to play Michael Conforto, who needs to play.

Good chance they right the ship, but the whip needs to be righted.

I like that the rest of the top 20 includes teams that were not that high last week. Showing that they actually put the whole thing together but meh, not bothering to copy the names in for those crappy teams.

/Rangers are too damned high

The Cubs are 8-7.

If that gets you #1 in Power Rankings -- which are as pointless as pillows in a coffin -- then...wait, that covers it.

This.

It's way WAY too early to put stock in the standings. Sure, we're going on three weeks into season and we're able to see some trends- some trends are reassuring, some concerning. But it's still very easy to turn around either a good or bad season.

The only thing that annoys me is when you have a manager brush off a bunch of losses and bad baseball with "it's early" or "it's a long season." Well, yes, but how many times do we get into September and a team finds itself within 2-3 games of being a contender for the postseason? Yes, it's early, but these mid-April games count just as much as the ones played in August and September. Screwing the pooch now can mean you're watching the postseason on TV instead of from the dugout. While nobody should be throwing in towels for the season in April, any collection of losses, especially those due to a lot of fielding or baserunning errors, is something that ought to have them saying "We're going to work on this." Not just brushing it off, but admitting there's an issue that must be addressed. Otherwise you get into June, you're still playing bad baseball, and now you're really starting to become screwed.

Remain?  I thought they were downgraded to 2nd last list.  Not sure if the Cubs are top tier right now.  Hitting has been anemic and the pitching has been questionable.  Still a lot of season to get into the swing of it and they do have talent.

Can we at least decide if we are going to use the MLB or the ESPN power rankings?

Aaron Judge's at bats are so much fun that I actually don't mind John Sterling when he's up.

Cubs needed some 9th inning heroics to pull out the series win against Milwaukee, but they still had a 4-5 homestand, including a 4-game losing streak.

Last season, they didn't lose 4 in a row until June 20-23, and that kicked off a 5-15 stretch which included their only other two 4 game losing streaks of the season, one of which stretched to five games.

The good news? Besides it's still freaking April? Albert Almora looks like he's ready to take over CF every day, Schwarber continues to mash the good pitches and lay off the bad ones, Jon Lester has an ERA+ of 379(!) over three starts, and Davis and Uehara look like solid additions to the bullpen so far.

I know MLB has the Cubs first because they're expected to play better than they have, but you could say the same thing about Houston or Baltimore, and they're already playing well. At some point, you need to address what's happening on the field if you're making lists like this, and if you're going to demote the Indians, a popular pick to make it back to the World Series, for their sluggish start, you should probably apply that logic equally.

That said, it's still freaking April. Bring on the Reds/Pirates/Red Sox road trip!

wow, went looking for the Red Sox around the 12-15 range and did not see them so assumed they fell out of the top 20. Buut at 5?  a little generous there. hopefully JBJ coming back will help - honestly not sure how I feel about Price?  Maybe he takes a cue from the born-again-Panda and comes back with a new attitude, or maybe comes back and acts all grumpy cat again.

Well since MLB.com apparently doesn't know there are thirty teams, why the gel are we linking to their stuff?

Fair point, but the article specifically explains that the Cubs are being given the #1 slot not for current record, but for long-term expectations.

Reeeeally hoping this "9 wins in last 10 games" Yankees team is the real one and not that whole 1-4 start one, lol.

Sure, they're pointless, but we have a 24-hour sports news cycle now, so...gotta talk about SOMETHING.

The season is long. There's a lot of potential there, but I'm still a little skeptical about that rotation. It would be really cool though if CC cleans up, becomes a crafty lefty, and pitches into his 40s.

There isn't a "real" MLB team that persists throughout the year.  They all shift half a dozen times over the course of the year, and all of them are real and exactly what they are then.

The question is whether most of those shifts were productive, and if they're at a high point as the season closes.

Well for the reason that it is basically the same team that won the World Series last year.
