So let me see if I understand the position of the 101st Fark Keyboard Battalion.  We can't attack North Korea in any way because they would unleash a barrage of conventional artillery that would wipe out Seoul (even though 95% of their artillery isn't capable of reaching Seoul).  In addition to that attack, they'd fired off whatever missiles they have, and might actually get lucky and hit something.

Instead, we should continue doing nothing while Best Korea continues working towards their ultimate goal of a nuclear capable ICBM.  Because if there's ever a time to step up and deal with crazy, it's after they have the means to reach out and touch you with nuclear weapons.

I'd call this retard logic, but that would be disrespectful to the mentally deficient.

According to what we know...The US is doing nothing aggressive.  NK are testing nuclear devices and threatening the US.  The US is taking a defensive stance.

If what we know about this is 100% true, then why does NK insist that it is the US that is constantly threatening them?

I know what everyone is going to say.  It's all been said already.  The NK government really is crazy, it's all a show for the people, etc...  But what if you're all wrong this time?

That's a dangerous gambit, as Khadafi and Saddam learned. Anglophone nations tend to make public statements in understatement, and interpret the statements of other nations with the same understanding of meaning.

Thus, we not only take you at your word, we assume what you're really planning is worse. Then the big stick comes out.

I don't think people are worried so much about what North Korea's artillery would do.  Go read the wikipedia entry on the Korean War.  Combined US/South Korea forces were in a good position to defeat the North until CHINA GOT INVOLVED.

As pissed off as China seems to be at North Korea at the moment, fifty years of posturing leads us to believe that if the US bombed North Korea, China would bomb South Korea, and if we used nukes, China would definitely use nukes.

So, which is it? Their military is extraordinarily incompetent that they can't hit a stationary target with conventional artillery despite Seoul being somewhere like 35 miles away from the border? Or they're James Bond villains that are going to wipe L.A. off the face of the earth as soon as they build an ICBM?

How interesting, a thread about North Korea right above a thread about South Korea in the main tab, was that on purpose?  As for Lil Kim, STFU, you know if you do anything your country will end up be a crater and your only allies are so tired of you that they just might look the other way if it happens.  You're the Chihuahua among nations, a little dog with a big mouth but nothing to really back it up.

North Korea claims South Korea as its territory (they are still technically at war); the US continues to arm and train rebels on its sovereign soil.  Considering how long the status quo has been going on, it's a flimsy claim, but it's still there.  North Korea has to continue the brinkmanship for the same reason companies have to actively defend their trademarks or they will fall into the public domain.

Also, which of Trump's tweets about North Korea have not been threatening?  Gasoline on fire.

Well there really are 2 options:

1) Keep working covertly to sabotage (I know you planned it) their nuclear and missile program to stop them from hitting us

2) Preemptive massing military strike

I personally don't believe in killing hundreds of thousands of people, so 1 is probably the only course of action at this moment.

The "Seoul will be wiped out" is just the news-bite version of reality.

Yes, most of the southern portion of the city would be unscathed.
But the northernmost portion of the city is vulnerable, and there are OTHER big cities in SK, like Goyang (1 million), that are even closer to the border and thus able to be hit by the shorter range stuff.
The reason they aren't in the news-bite version is the average viewer isn't even aware of those cities.

The reason the current tensions are more difficult to categorize as "business as usual" is a combination of factors. One, NK is now making realistic if not bumbling progress towards a nuclear tipped ICBM.  And two, the regime is displaying less stability and more rhetoric than normal.  Stir those two together and you have one hell of a shiat soup.

This is not Iraq in 2003 or even the same Korean tension of 1950.  If China can't restrain them without force then we are only left with two other options, risk war on the Peninsula with targeted force or let NK have ranged WMD.  Nobody wants option three.  So here we are, stuck in a position where we may have to choose a costly war to prevent an even worse one.

I want China to sit on them withoutbfiring a shot, I am anti war, I was against Iraq the moment Bush started talking about WMD and I was even against deployment in Afghanistan.  This is different.  We pulled yet another dumb move with the Carl Vinson debacle, but taking a tougher line on North Korea is not the wrong move here.  It would be a mistake to let disgust with Trump cloud judgement on an issue that is very real and has been brewing for decades.  And we need to sober up and understand that we may need to use military power and soon.

The question is how much firepower can North Korea get off before South Korea and U.S. counter battery fire can respond and wipe out their artillery. That has been a factor too. Though I have a feeling that Trump would be willing to risk other people's lives to find out, just so he can say "I was responsible for ending the North Korean threat!"

One question we really can't expect an answer to beforehand is how long will these artillery batteries be functioning.  I'm sure the ROK and US military would make short work of these installations.

That border is why there's a North Korea at all. Had the border been entirely with China, all of Korea would have fallen into the America zone in 1945.
