It's in the Daily Mail, so I doubt the existence of whales, birth, and Texas.

You can tell how unhappy the orca are by their dorsal fin.

Wild orca have hard, erect dorsal fins:

But unhappy captive orca have flaccid dorsal fins:

Let's hope so... I grew up on a farm eating tasty, tasty animals, but always felt a little queasy seeing them perform.

// rode elephants as working animals, just as I have horses.

Pfft.  I'm seeing the Daily Mail on my computer screen and I now doubt the existence of electronics and light.

:/ it's a damned shame it had to be born into captivity. If the pod the mom came from is still out there, there's a slight possibility they would accept her in the wild and take care of raising the calf

From what I've read, that's pretty much spot on. Orca are some of the smartest animals on the planet, so it wouldn't be surprising if they saw the family resemblance in the calf.

The pod'd be like "you see that little baby orca over there?"
"Hey baby orca, what's your name?"
"I don't have a name. My trainers didn't know if I was a boy or a girl orca yet. Tee hee"
"Oh that sucks. You know, you remind me of someone I used to know. Someone who cut me off. Make it out like we were nothing and 'I don't even need your love'. And she treated me like a stranger and that felt rough. Why did she stoop so low? Just get scooped up by some trawler and disappear. I don't need that though."
"Uh, my mommy was Takara. Did you know her?"
"Now she's just some orca that I used to know."

If Fin Whale is any indication, no. Greasy, nasty shiat that even the Japanese "researchers" have to pawn off from their "research" as school lunches because no one would willingly eat it. Worst "Taco Tuesday" ever.

It's bad.

We wince at older pictures of zoos and how cramped the animals were in their cages, and how they were made to do stupid tricks and stunts to please an audience. Then we, in this day and age, try to do the exact same thing, but with killer whales.

Some of the same people that want to ban zoos and shiat like them, will go home and let their cat/s out to destroy every wild creature smaller than it.

really bad, stinky, fishy-tasting jerky that no one wants.

Put it this way...

If even the Japanese won't eat it as a "delicacy," then it's probably pretty nasty.

It is not "normal".  It's a sign of bad health.  Yes, it happens in the wild... to sick and malnourished orca.

I don't know, every Japanese doc involving the ocean that I have seen seems to focus on just how tasty all the creatures the divers discover are.

That's basically what happens when you let killer whales out, too.

They, cats, and humans are basically the three animals that murder. They're so good at killing things they can afford to be casual about it.

This^

That dorsal fin gets a good workout in the open ocean with the currents, waves, backwash from other orcas (they're moving in herds...they do move in herds!). Plus, killer whales are basically oversized dolphins and nearly as maneuverable. That's why the screw with everything in the ocean, because they can.

Sitting in a big bath tub with no current and occasionally doing a flip doesn't work out that fin quite as much. Plus, no hunting sooooo

If you're a tasty salmon swimming in the ocean and see a killer whale, don't worry about it. It's the 3 you don't see that should worry you

I watched Blackfish out of curiosity finally and I have to say I'm a tad flummoxed about the outrage. Am I the only one who felt that the movie tried very hard to make you upset but not really giving a reason why? By the end, I said to Mr Kirz, "THIS shut down Sea World? I must have missed something." I'm having a hard time with this, probably because I felt like the movie lacked ... something. A lot of things?
Don't get me wrong. Like with elephants, I struggle with how farking stupid people can be in their treatment of orcas. We've proven how intelligent they are but forget that when there is a bottom line. How has someone not been able to develop a better mouse trap? Can we not continue to study and appreciate them in some other close up manner? Sea World has done the world a lot of good when it comes to education and conservation of ocean life, outside of the parks, why does everyone seem to ignore that?
