The gift that keeps on giving. Taliban, ISIS, AL Qaeda. After a quarter century of beating up evil Muslims, shouldn't we be done by now?

A quarter century? Ah we been going at it much longer than that. Hell, you've been at it in one form or another since pretty much day one.

As someone who spent too much time in Helmand, if there's one province in Afghanistan that will never be on the side of the GIRoA or the U.S. or the Russians or anybody other than drug lords, it's Helmand.

Going back into Helmand province in 2017?

GLWT

Helmand is key cos of all the opium bucks the area is awash in.

That never seems to get mentioned.

"Are we going to change the game? I don't know; we'll find out," he said. "It's going to be a very challenging mission. Helmand and the Helmand River valley and that whole area is right smack-dab in the middle of [Taliban territory]."

Shorter answer:  No, at least not in the long run.

What the hell is the point of this? Even the Commanding General is, out of the gate, lowering expectations. We sent 15,000 coalition troops in 2010 for Operation Moshtarak and the assault on Marja, and they were mired there for the next 3 years (rotationally speaking); that's not even to speak of the whole province.

Now we're going to send in a what is, given the unit and size, a slightly reinforced company? Are they just going to sit on Camp Dwyer the whole time? They can practically do nothing except be targets.

And yes, I know they're going to be a "force multiplier" for the ANF, but let's be real. If the ANF, or Afghan government for that matter, were a force in that province, then we wouldn't be sending our troops. This is literally pointless.

/we've always been at war with East Asia

How do you change the situation there? All out invasion. Kill anyone who doesn't like us. Grant American citizenship to all children born after the military government is established. Sit there for the next thirty years, protecting the rights of the American citizens who live there, extending Constitutional rights to all who meet our qualifications for permanent residency and then citizenship, with everyone who doesn't play along not extended those protections. Then have the American citizens there vote for one among them to take the mantle of territorial governor until they qualify as a new state. Authorize several new states from the territory so they have adequate representation and regional differences can be honored.

Simple. A PR nightmare. Requires a much longer time commitment than would survive our politics. But I'm not sure that anything less would "fix" the problems in Afghanistan. We have already had a long term commitment to military action there that keeps being revived. It would take structural changes among their population to not end up with this same issue over and over again.

My point is, there is no plan because there can be no plan. Unless we decide to claim Afghanistan as our own, there is no way to keep the Taliban out of power there in at least some areas. Admit it and let it go, or go all in and buy the whole damned country.

My New Fighting/Filing Technique Is Unstoppable isn't about Engrish - it's about hip smack talk. That is one old school online comic, and it pretty much conveyed all that is suck with America At War post-9/11 (comic was around before that, but got really fired up around that time).

Also, ya, I looked again, and there's grammatical/punctuation slop. Not Engrish, though. That's bonafide U.S. of A. bad grammar.
