Those Russians bombers can be a real bear. But the whole thing could backfire on them.

I remember as kid in the 70s reading about how common an activity this is and how beneficial it is. It provides top-tier, scenario-specific training for pilots on both sides; it tests, assesses, and confirms boundaries; and it allows members of both teams to shake hands in mutual respect. I remember an accompanying photo of a Soviet pilot giving the peace sign from his cockpit.

A US Air Force E-3 AWAC aircraft was reportedly dispatched from Elemendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage and accompanied the Russian planes until they turned around 35 miles from the coast.

What's it going to do if they become hostile? Speed up its radome and saw their tails off?

So the astronaut says, "Back home, we drink whiskey. It's the best."

The cosmonaut frowns. "No. Back home, we drink vodka. It's the best."

Then the stuffed dog says, "I am home and I'll drink your blood."

After that it was quiet.

The Art of War states that a leader who continuously interferes in military matters weakens his empire, and that when a general is on the field, they are not bound to the leader's suggestions if they feel it contradicts the safety and/or the effectiveness of the military.

Just thought I'd throw that in because it seems North Korea is about to also get a good lesson from China on that weak nation that overstates its military prowess portion also mentioned.

This is why the fact they launched a huge disinformation campaign to get you elected is a huge effing problem. Almost like these sanctions are meant to control their militaristic nature! farkING ROCKET SCIENCE I KNOW RIGHT?!?!?

And of course, Putin's been playing Trump like a fiddle since well before the election.  If only the American people weren't so ignorant and gullible.

A general who disobeys Trump and loses is done. A general who disobeys Trump and wins needs to be sure Trump still gets the credit, and no one knows he disobeyed. Trump puts such a value on face he'll kick any costs as far down the chain as he can.

I think he only tolerates Spicer's buffoonery because he views him as the distraction, not the administration.

It was very common then. My dad was an F-4 and F-15 WSO and was stationed in Alaska and Germany (when the Russians would come that direction, as well).  I have some pretty cool photos of F-4s escorting Bears.

That shiat has happened since we started flying airplanes, and will continue through the heat death of the universe.   We would come up on deck and watch the Russians do a flybys while transiting the South China Sea.   They'd have their Tomcat escort, usually wagged their wings as they flew by, everyone took pictures, and life went on.

The pearl grabbing and couch fainting over it is freaking amusing.

It seems silly that we scramble our premier fighter/interceptor to escort such an old Cold War relic. It seems as though F 15s or F 16s could handle it without the risk of incidentally revealing any of the F 22s operational capabilities.
Keep your ace up your sleeve till you really need it.

That would require the TU-95 crew to be able to hear anything whatsoever over the unparalleled roar of their own engines. They're light years ahead of us in engine-noise technology.

You fly the planes you have.   F-15s and F-16s are both cold war relics themselves.  The F-22's capabilities (or lack thereof) are already pretty well known.

Because there is a ton of commercial air traffic going from the west coast to Asia and back that flies in that general area.  The AWACs helps ensure that none of that gets tangled up with a military operation.

Is this a new start of Russian military trolling till Trump blows his boy wad and orders strikes?
Teasing the dumb fat kid till he starts crying and chasing you around with arms flailing?
All of the above?
