Meh.

I'll probably watch the first episode, but with all the other superhero shows currently on, I think I'll be skipping this one.  Plus, my angst quota is already filled by the various CW series.

I may have to re-watch that.  10 year old Atomic thought that movie was great, and the bad guy(s) were very menacing.  I fear that the 42 year-old Atomic is going to think that his 10 year old self had terrible taste in movies.

The end scene where the main bad has the kid against the wall and is describing what he is about to do to him scared the shiat out of me.

I collected some issues of this comic way back when I was a teenager, before coming to the realization of what a stereotyped setup this was. Black man as hulking scary looming threat, little blonde girl as pure white untouchable object.

Of course back then I don't think they ever got together, but maybe now they'd actually be able to kiss at least?

just did a google image search. oh the fan art and cosplay ... hahahaha apparently "That's my fetish" is not an uncommon reaction.

I read a few of these Back In The Day. Never really thought of it as a movie or TV show material. What do I know? Here's hoping it's a good series.

I don't recall Cloak being particularly menacing, he just had the cool unique power while Dagger was kind of crap.

It's the really hokey 80's anti-drugs stuff that I remember.  Apparently drug dealers make a habit of kidnapping teenagers to get them hooked on drugs.

... and the bad guys, Mr Yip was all kinds of awesome.

2017-04-20 09:25:33 AM
It's a love story that happens to have characters that have always traditionally been in that age group

...and I'm done. Yet another attempt to rewrite a grim origin story to make it palatable for network television.

It's not a love story, and certainly didn't involve romance. Tyrone and Tandy were runaways, who met by chance and were then captured & used as test subjects for synthetic drugs. Unlike all of the other runaways, who died from the drug, they were changed by it - and used their newfound powers to kill those who wronged them. Their relationship was one of mutual dependency, and it became pretty farking grim later on.

2017-04-20 09:27:33 AM
And the last time I read anything with Cloak and Dagger was during the Spider-Island event. Their powers got swapped.

2017-04-20 09:42:23 AM
The TV series is going to run into the same problem the comic has run into. Cloak's power is one of the more interesting one's in the superhero genre, but a portrayal of villians being subjected to their worst fear every episode/issue can get stale pretty easily.

Dagger's only remerable trait is her custome. Her powers were pretty bland. They will have to have a good writer to make her anything other than generic blond superheroine.

We might get a few good episodes, but I don't think there is enough interesting material there to carry the series more than a season or two.

...which it's why it's going to go like this:

Season 1: The first half will be spent building a "wrong-side-of-the-tracks" romance between two teenage characters. The second half will be spent manufacturing pretexts by which they end up together, in hot water, with their powers.
Season 2: The first half will be spent negotiating painful, manufactured drama about their relationship as complicated by their powers. The second half will be spent manufacturing a villain meant to keep our "star-crossed lovers" apart.
Season 3: Retreaded plot devices abound as they bump into their baddies over & over again - they haven't really gotten this far yet.

It's goddamned Disney, via ABC, trying to capitalize on a Reagan-era "Don't Do Drugs, Kids!" story without either talking about the realities of drugs, or the realities of teen runaways, in the era of "Let's Cash In On Superheroes" content creation. I mean, the farking "Goldbergs" is still a going concern for these folks.

From the trailer, it looks like their powers come from a Roxxon chemical accident and not a new designer drug, so the whole "Just Say No" angle may not be part of the story. Although I'm not sure how you do a story about homeless kids and not have a storyline about an addict on the streets eventually.

Mr. Shabooboo: How will Dabney Coleman fit into this?

Useless fact - he and my grandmother knew each other as kids. That doesn't fit here either (TWSS), but I thought you should know.

// also, came for Jack Flack, leaving via escape route
// i.e. secret cockpit emergency exit ex machina (while walking through flames)

I thought I was a comic book nerd but the last 5 years have taught me I hardly read any comics outside of the big titles.

I always thought their comics were horrible.  Even when they helped Spider Man fight Carnage, they were pretty lame.  Mr. Jip was pretty badass though.

I might watch the show just to see what they do.

2017-04-20 10:42:36 AM
Looks like another crappy teen drama, which I can't stand, and Cloak and Dagger in the comics always bored me,  but it also looks like it's filmed in my hometown of New Orleans, so I'll probably check it out. Also, the girl is kinda cute.

Yep. All Disney saw was "teen romance" and ditched everything else remotely related to the original story. The only thing that was interesting from the original story was the dependent interaction between the two of them - the quiet horror of Dagger feeding Cloak's hunger to stave off the darkforce dimension, the gnawing uncertainty regarding their lives, the realities of living hand-to-mouth in churches and shelters while dealing with something that they don't understand and can't fully control.

It's clear that they're going to tie this bullshiat into the Darkforce crap they whipped out in Agents of SHIELD, and it's clear that Roxxon's corporate espionage & experimentation will be the driving force. That makes this whole damned thing pointless - it's "Cloak and Dagger" in name only, with a largely different, and less interesting, backstory, so that Disney can push a teen drama in the MCU. Feh.

Like, I'll keep up with stuff I'm already engaged in, like the Netflix Defenders stuff and Aos, or the Flarrowverse stuff, but I'm not adding another superhero show into my viewing rotation unless it's Nextwave.

They actually already have rebooted it twice. Once with Warren Ellis putting his spin on the characters with Newuniversal, and then in Hickman's Avengers run when he introduced a mainstream Marvel universe versions of Nightmask and Starbrand. I was kind of disappointed by the Hickman versions because they were built up as being important to the build up to Secret Wars but didn't really do a whole hell of a lot when the Time Runs Out story reached its climax.
