(NPR)   Rock-of-Gibraltar-sized asteroid will pass closer to Earth today than in 400 years. I want to show scientists' full quote about its chances of impact, but due to Fark's character limits can only include: "...the asteroid will collide with our planet"   ( npr.org) divider line
More: Scary, asteroid, potentially hazardous asteroid, Sun, member station KQED, Near-Earth Objects Observation, Near-Earth object, Catalina Sky Survey, contact binary structure

Thanks Fark.

I'm looking with my ocular and can't find the flying barbell.  I don't skip leg or core days so I should be around next time it visits though.

At its closest approach, which should occur around midday ET Wednesday,

And this went green at 5:16 ET Wednesday. So much for suspense.

All we need is a misfit crew of drillers and a nuclear bomb. That and Steven Tyler as backup so he can let loose an asteroid-shattering scream in case things go bad.

How many hundreds of thousands of asteroids have passed by us that we've never known about?

Unless the motherfarker is an Armageddon-event asteroid, and GUARANTEED to hit us in, say, 6 months or less, what say we quit tracking them, mmmmmmmkay?

No need to unnecessarily panic those idiots who are already running to their survival shelters.

Just keep in mind that we are overdue for a fairly big strike. On the other hand, they always hit Russia, so you can relax. Assuming you don't live in Russia.

"the asteroid will be a little over a million miles away..."

That would have fit just fine.

(blank) "...the asteroid will collide with our planet"   (npr.org )

Never leave a fill in the blank sentence where Brantgoose might find it.

a) Chances are negligible that ... (scientific)
b) It is Obama's fault that ... (partisan)
c) It is shameful evidence of the wicked frivolity or insanity of Fark mods that they always greenlight claims that ... (endemic on Fark.com)
d) In the fulness of geological and astronomic time scales ... (Aha! Gotcha! The Correct answer is not inevitalbly "C".
e) Gros nez provacatif. (Whoops. Sorry. That one was an outtake from Cyrano de Bergerac.

About as big as the Rock of Gibraltar, asteroid 2014 JO25 is coming so close that its visit should be visible even to small telescopes.

Hooray, I have a small telescope!

Weather report: Cloudy, 70% chance of rain.

Eff you, weather.

How do you suggest we ascertain we are about to be hit, without tracking them???
