"Lately"?

I've owned three HTC smartphones over six years, and each time I bought them they were way ahead of the then latest iPhone in specs and features.

My first gen Surface RT could do things like multitasking that the iPad took several years to copy. And they still lack things like proper multitasking, user accounts, tablet and desktop UI depending on how you are using it, mouse support, second display support etc, all things that even the base model first gen Surface RT had.

And today the Surface Pro wipes the floor with the iPad Pro in almost every spec, and Microsoft are leading in innovation with things like the Surfaces Type Cover, vastly better than the iPad Pro keyboard cover, the Surface Book and Surface studio, the Dial, the amazing Hololens (that you can buy and use today) and so on.

There are two areas MS is lacking. A decent flagship phone and a home voice assistant. Cortana is great on Windows devices. Why haven't they bought out a Alexa type device? Cortana on my phone and tablet can actually do a lot of stuff without a network, something that Siri, Alexa, Google Now etc can't.

There's no denying Apple's sales are way ahead of Microsofts in phones and tablets. But then McDonalds Restaurants sells a lot more meals than Heston Blumenthal's. Does that mean their food is the best?

After a bit of Googling apparently it's on the way. MS is encouraging companies like Harmon Kardon to make Cortana home devices. I'll have to look out for that.

Apple is overrated. The only thing getting thinner is ur wallet.
Get a LG, Samsung, or HTC.

I've owned several iPads, and they are the biggest pieces of shiat tablets ever.  My ex wife bought some cheapo Chinese tablet for 65 bucks at Walmart a few days ago, and it works as well or better than any of my iPads.  No more Apple for me.

I will say that the iPods I had were ok.  Not earth shattering, just ok.

"forcing it to move the sensor to an awkward position on the rear of the phone"

Awkward position?

You mean the position where your finger naturally falls when you pick up the phone?

I've got a Nexus 5x and I think having the sensor on the back is great!

I just got an iPhone 7 Plus. (Needed to upgrade from the 6.)

Yes, the loss of the headphone jack is an issue.

But more importantly even with the included adapter the sound on my usual headphones sounds like crap. They are not high end but they are decent enough for what I need. But the sound on them now is so bad I can't even bear to use them.

This is Not. Farking. Acceptable.

/only saving grace is that the factory earbuds actually sound decent. And the speakerphone.
//and I'm digging on the camera

I have issues with some of Apple's decisions, and will never own another iPhone, but for media consumption, battery life, and device construction, my large iPad Pro is my daily driver/bedroom tablet.

Came to comment on this too. I upgraded to a Pixel XL from my Nexus 6, and the rear fingerprint sensor is great. It activates almost instantly and doesn't require extra movements, it's just part of picking up the phone for me.

Surface pro and its type cover makes the iPad look like Fisher Price though, that thing is tits.

After Apple rejected standardized charging ports and opted for ludicrously expensive proprietary plugs years ago, I find it humorous that the author is as far behind realizing that Apple doesn't have the consumer's best interest in mind as he accuses Apple of being behind in innovation.

As someone who's been quick charging my phone with USB-C for 1.5 years now, I can't believe Apple has still that silly proprietary thin connector.  I normally never bother with these threads, but if they do go to USB-C connector on all iOS devices (even if it's some other protocol) that would be a step in the right direction.

It's kinda why I've held off on the new MacBook Pro. However, I'm pretty deep in the ecosystem now so I'm not sure I can easily go full Android + Windows 10 or whatever.

A couple years ago that was a big deal (switch from Apple to Android), now not so much.  I did it with a nexus 6p past year and it was a piece of cake, haven't looked back and get my new Samsung s8 plus today...

You can tell whether or not a particular shift at work predominantly uses Apple or not, just based on the question 'who has a charger'. People either whip out Apple cords or they bring out a USB-C connector. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

I don't know if they're not the best, but I own a £159 Moto G4 and I'm pretty much "does the job" about it. I have 64GB of music on the SD card, it takes good enough photos and video, browses and stuff fast enough. The only thing I don't like is battery life, but even then, I could get a Moto Z Play for £350 that would cover that.

I own an iPad Mini. Just for website testing. It was £320 to buy. And yes, it's nicer and lighter and has a better battery life than my wife's Lenovo tablet, but that's about all I get for something that cost over 3 times as much. And the Lenovo tab even has an SD card that will take a big card, so it's more useful as the machine to go on holiday as I can put as many films I want on cards.

Apple has had issues, sure. Apple tends to have a lot more issues when Jobs isn't around. Anyone remember the boat of fail that Apple was under John Scully? The company had no idea what to do, innovation was, well...weird, and Apple fell apart.

And then Jobs comes back and we get a somewhat solid period of more or less decent products. The Macbook Pro that came before the current iteration of fail, for example.

And that's just it. I think Jobs wouldn't or couldn't export his process to Apple prior to his death. Apple now has the vibe of headless direction mixed with a touch of cargo culting. We get daffy crap like a MBP with a touch bar. Whoever thought that eliminating the headphone jack was a good idea should be repeatedly punched in the balls.

They're either get their shiat together, or they'll drop back to what they were under Scully, second fiddle to Microsoft.

Yeah, that looks cool. I suspect MS is trying to keep their OEMs happy. Apple is Apple, they make the hardware and the software and screw everyone else. Microsoft made their money making software for lots of manufacturers of hardware to use. If MS start looking like they are not only making hardware but giving their own hardware side preferential treatment at the expense of the companies that have been their biggest customers then they might start looking into Android, Linux etc. instead of Windows.

I suspect MS keep the Surface line deliberately priced at the top end of the market to allow plenty of room for all the OEMs to sell their tablets happily. The Surface is the flagship, everyone else can say "It's just like a Surface but half the price!"

/I love my Linx 1010 (last years model to the one linked above) that cost me $160 including the keyboard cover and runs full Windows 10. It's an amazing machine.

Apple has been about 2 years behind the hardware technology in their smartphones since at least around 2010. My Galaxy S6 has better specs than the iPhone 7. I would bet that my Galaxy S6 has better specs than the new iPhone coming later this year.
Apple at least used to be able to make some beautiful hardware. I use a last gen Macbook Pro for work that is still pretty amazing. I just had to get rid of IOS and install Linux.

Google Now actually has a bunch of offline functionality.  Just FYI.  You can do anything that doesn't require the internet.

Actually, there is a middle ground.  Most iusers that have peripherals and battery packs all have micro USB and I'm sure eventually USB C cords because no one wants to pay the extra shiatton of cash when they don't need to.  I've seen BT keyboard that specifically say it's built for idevices...  charging with microusb.  LOL

Didn't know they'd added that. One thing Cortana can't do offline is set an alarm, I guess because i have my alarms and reminders synched to my PC and tablet so without a network I could set an alarm and then blame Cortana when my PC didn't remind me.

I've had only one apple product an IPad 2 from work I tried to setup at home.  Hated having to use ITunes to use it, I reload my computer often so setting it backup was always the largest hassle of the process.

I'm used to just plugging in my android phone or any mobile device and draging and dropping files.

/But on the other side my S8 plus is arriving today so getting a kick
//will use with a pot holder the first week in case it explodes
///Just in case any of you Farkers ordered one and didn't know jump on Samsung's site to get the Gear VR goggles for preordering

I hate my work iphone so much, I chose to walk around with two phones rather than have to deal with it when not on work time. And these ipods are ridiculous.  Why can't you just plug it into your computer and drop mp3s onto it?!?  I recently told two people I can't help them.  Go buy a Sansa mp3 player for $40 instead.
