Mine would know, and she'd squat and pee on the square of tape just to let you know she knew.

/She's kind of a little b*tch, frankly.

My little furball doesn't like boxes open on top. Refuses to go near them. What he loves is boxes on their side. I figure it's the cave appeal.

Neither of my cats seem to care for boxes in any orientation, which is odd.

When Guybrush wants alone time he hides under my bed. LeChuck never seems to want alone time, ever.

I'd like to ask you to do me a favor, and dust your entertainment center.

After you've closed up the PC, of course.

My cat never seems to take much interest in boxes, either. But if I leave an empty drawer open she leaps right in.

I have a wetbar in my basement with a counter and some lights that shine on it and my cat will literally sit in the circle of the light, like a spotlight.  I had no idea I could just lay down some tape.  That's way more energy efficient.

At first I thought, "Damn, cats are stupid!" Then I remembered that cowboys thought a horsehair lariat looped around their bedroll kept snakes and scorpions away, and sorcerers draw circles on the floor to confine demons. So I changed my mind. Cats AND humans are stupid!

I have one that seeks safety by opening a kitchen cabinet and pretending to be one with the rolls of paper towels in there and another who is so rotund and pleasantly foolish he has no concept of danger. Given a taped square on the floor he'd just figure it was a new mat for the food bowl and wait by it accordingly.

I just tried it.
It works.

2017-04-19 12:14:27 PM
I tried it a while back when I first heard about it. The cats didn't care. Sniffed the tape and walked away.

2017-04-19 12:20:03 PM
I was lying on my side placing the tape and one of my cats climbed onto me and hunkered down on my hip.  She watched me finish with the tape and then began purring like a fiend so that I'd pet her.

I guess it worked?

wait...do we share two cats?  I have one that when she wants safety, she opens the cupboard and sleeps behind the potatoes and onions.  One other is rotund and pleasantly unconcerned about anything, and would probably act the same.  He is also the one that will eat the "crumbs" of crunchy treats the girls can't be bothered to.

Honestly any piece of paper on the floor will do. If it's a thing on top of another thing, my cats want to sit on it.

Well, that explains why my cat spends the entire day under the comforter on my bed.

Seriously, I think it's more than that, at least with my cat.  She had been abused, and I got her from the shelter.  She will spend all day under the comforter, and it can get damn hot under there.  But around dusk, she comes out.  I guess she learned that all the bad stuff happens during daylight; once it gets dark, the HOOMANS are in for the night; no surprise trips to the vet or something like that.

When she's out, she'll sleep near me.  She MUST have one paw on me at all times.  If I move slightly, she looks at me, trying to decide if she needs to run away or not.

Actually, I think it's just the humans that are stupid for assuming that a cat is seeking a safe spot. Let's be honest, How many people here would go stand on a differently colored spot on the floor just 'cause it's different? I would. Look at kids jumping from tile to tile on a checkerboard floor. It's the same thing.

maybe? does your round clown also answer to "meatloaf"?

did you maybe roll him in tissue paper and twist it loosely around his tail say, at christmas time, so that he also sometimes called "the reggaeton fattie"?

You have done a good thing taking her in and providing her with a good home.

My last kitty had similar issues. She was an older cat we adopted from the shelter and when we first got her she spent the first week hiding. At first she wouldn't eat unless there was no one around. If anyone so much as came near the kitchen she'd bolt. She learned to trust us but she remained a bit skittish and always hid whenever we had company. I don't think she ever would have gotten completely over that.

But yeah all my cats have loved their hidey holes and perches. If I put an empty box out they had to check it out. They seemed to especially love the closets and nestling among the hanging clothes. Great for them, not so much for the clothes. I made sure my last kitty had lots of safe spaces to hide or perch up high. I couldn't afford anything fancy so I just stacked up some boxes to various levels in a couple spots in my room and let her clamber around those when she wasn't by her spot near the window. I even cut a hole in the side of a box and set a towel in there and stuck it up on top of a wardrobe. Her own little penthouse apartment. I bought her a cat tree but she much preferred the larger computer desk to lounge on. More space to stretch out I guess.
