And congratulations to Blizzard for butchering the patch.

The important thing is that I made a thread explaining how StarCraft is in Early Access, and while Blizzard gets the game ready for launch, people should should try out some of their older games, like StarCraft II.

It was deleted in about five minutes.  Glad to see Blizzard is on top of things.

I always thought Command & Conquer and Warcraft II were better. Starcraft... I dunno, I never really got into the story or characters, nor the rabid behavior of the entire continent of Asia when it comes to that game.

Mostly, though, I got bored with RTS games a long time ago. Click, point, click . . . right click . . . ZZzzzz

Yep - was expecting Command & Conquer as well when I read the headline. StarCraft? Not so much.

Most of C&C is officially free these days. I believe everything up to and including Tiberian Sun, actually.

Remember the groundrules for a StarCraft vs. Total Annihilation flame war.

If you're a fan of Total Annihilation, all competing games are "real-time tactics" and TA is the only game worthy of the "real-time strategy" moniker.  This is because you are a hardcore gamer who enjoys only the most mature games, inbetween marathons of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

If you are a fan of StarCraft, then you need to call Total Annihilation a "dead game" and imply it is not worth playing because nobody else plays it, ignoring that nobody plays the genre anymore, period.  Also, the fact the Koreans turned the game into a spectator sport proves that it's good, because if anyone has good videogame taste, it's the country that banned "Japanese everything" until the turn of the century.

So what I'm trying to say is, you're all casuals, and the true manly man's RTS is League of Legends, because you actually have to THINK about how to aim the skillshots.  Wow.  Such a deep game.

Man, I spent/wasted three full summers playing that game.

I never got any good, though, because I wasn't a fan of the whole "Always play on the same map refining the exact same strategy over and over again", so 99% of the games didn't appeal to me.

I was one of the few who preferred to play Free for alls on random maps, with a random race. Sure, my win-loss ratio looked bad, and it often took a good 10-15 minutes just to find enough players to start a game, but it was worth it.

You misspelled DOTA 2 you filthy pleb. The game single-handedly revolutionized the RTS gene by taking that flaming pile of hot garbage that was Warcraft 3, and turning it into something strategic and playable before eventually becoming the sole light in the darkness that is RTS. LoL is just a cheap knock off, but at least it's not as cheap as that Heroes of the Storm shiat.

I still have my burned copy from high school.

I went to a vocational school in high school and took computer repair, our teacher lost half his hand to a snow blower and the substitute didn't know anything so we set up a LAN and played Star Craft for grades that semester.

Same teacher was in a car accident the following year and we had a smarter sub that wouldn't let us play games, but let us sleep and screw off.

I have no idea how to repair a computer.

Um, there's a simple solution for getting it to work.

YOU MUST CONSTRUCT ADDITIONAL PYLONS

I thought the simple solution was delete your cache and .wtf files, restart your computer, turn off your firewall, flush your ipconfig, and run the game as administrator?

Or just go play Steam games.

I am in love with this idea that Warcraft III was such a bad RTS, it became one of the best games in the world, when someone turned it into an RTS where you control a single unit.

And the joke's on you, Heroes of the Storm is the only dota game which isn't repulsive shiat.  Le smiley face of uncomfortable truth-telling. :^)

Controlling one unit is far more strategic and thought provoking than an entire army. Warcraft 3 was a dumpster fire of a game. I mean, I put in over 500 hours before I ever was introduced to DOTA. Pretty sure I know trash when I spend that long playing it. DOTA just made it better all around. Took the only good part of the game, the heroes, and made it the focus. Not this Starcraft with swords shiat.

Pfft, clearly you haven't played Smite! It's made by the same guys who make Paladins, their games are super original and fun.

The one-note characters and lack of any real story is probably why it's popular in Asia.  Remember that they're not actually playing the game as such, they're using a restricted mode and set of rules to turn it into a procedural 1v1 game.  The less tied to the storyline and progression etc the mechanics are, the better, so C&C would be pretty terrible for it -- highly storyline-sensitive mechanics and scenarios, tech trees much more nuanced than the simple this-beats-that of starcraft, even the ability to highlight units and group them in any combination make it more difficult to boil it down to the equivalent of checkers.

This is basically the aspect exploited in coming up with the MOBA - half a page of character per champion, if that, and players are outright encouraged to ignore a lore that's intentionally gibberish so that they can focus of a simplified pvp scenario with minimal de facto randomness.

I'll definitely grab a copy to introduce my kids to RTS when they get a bit older.

I've bought starcraft about 4-5 times already.  I remember getting it on launch and not having the hard drive space to run it (80mb) but I had a zip drive - so I installed it all on a zip disk.  It ran, but boy was it slow.

As an old fart, I still enjoy an old school 90s RTS.   I'm not going to join a "guild".   I read books for storytelling, character development and insights into the human condition.   I have no desire to test my decrepit  reflexes in a FPS against some 14 year old who plays 16 hours a day in a FPS.    No desire to immerse myself in exploring some digital world during my 2 hours of gaming time a week.    Just give me a single player RTS campaign mission, and let me work on it during football game commercials

We used to keep an image of Windows with Brood Wars on our imaging server at work for after work multiplayer matches over the lan. Multicast the image onto the PC's in the training room, unplug it from the rest of the network and go to town.

Yeah. You can't even enjoy all the eye candy they spent all that time creating. If you (well, if *I*) stop clicking for a few seconds to see how a battle goes, to watch the explosions and lovingly rendered flying bits, I'm suddenly so behind the curve that I get obliterated. I LOVED RTS for a long time, but now I don't know if there exist any where you can pause the game (in single player) and even look at the battlefield, much less give commands.

I prefer C&C to Starcraft, thematically, but I will grant that SC's balance is one of those rare near-perfect systems, especially involving three different mechanics.

I do hope for a Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour rerelease when I see things like this. But alas that game needs more than just an art pass, it would need new pathing, netcode, the ability to zoom out, and more than a few little balance adjustments ala 1.06 community patch. A little too much scope creep me thinks.

^these. I also agree that Rise of Nations and C&C (RA to RA2 era) were easily better than SC. But I cannot deny the role SC played in mainstreaming RTS games. I never really got into SC myself. WC2 was the peak of Blizzard RTS games for me. I loved that campaign so much as a young lad
