Taking selfies while driving is illegal in a LOT of places.  Posting evidence that you committed a crime is a really stupid thing to do.

Ah, OK. I know it's illegal to text in certain cities in my state, but I don't know if that applies to selfies, too. I've seen tons of pictures of friends on FB who live up in the mountains who have taken pictures of the backseat when they're clearly driving. There's not a lot of traffic, but they are mountain roads, so there are turns and elk and deer which are probably more populous than rats.

Right. Except that he hasn't been hit with a fine. The cops responded to his tweet with the invitation to contact them so they can hand out the fine and points. Naturally his reponse was to simply delete the account so they are 'seeking' him.

So yeah. I bet the boys at the Yard are all over this one.

In the UK they are anal about doing anything while driving.
A woman was arrested for holding an apple while driving.
They even sent a police helicopter to track her down.

Just because there's a murder to investigate doesn't mean they shouldn't stop to pick the low-hanging fruit.

Yet. They have is full name, a close-up picture, and the fact that he was getting married the next day, so he shouldn't be too difficult to find. Besides, Twitter can easily be subpoenaed by the police.

Despite all the cop hate on Fark, you'd think there would be a little hate left over for douchebags like this who do unsafe stuff at the wheel of a moving car.

xanadian: I'm just glad the police had solved all those other crimes

I somehow doubt it took much time away from targeting other crimes.  The "Operation Dragoon" that texted him is apparently a road safety initiative, so unlikely to be going after drug traffickers and such.

subfactorial: Right. Except that he hasn't been hit with a fine. The cops responded to his tweet with the invitation to contact them so they can hand out the fine and points. Naturally his reponse was to simply delete the account so they are 'seeking' him.

They have his photo, the date of his wedding, whatever Twitter can/will give them of his deleted account, the twitter account of his wife (which may have some pertinent info) and apparently his name (which is presumably on his driving license).

His twitter handle indicates an interest in planes.  The fourth result for his name on google is this flicker account.  It has another photo of him and the city he lives in (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, which matches the Twitter account of his wife and the location of the police who are after him (Northumbria).

Can't see it causing them too much trouble to find him.

Should he have done this?  No.  However, I am of the opinion that a cop should be physical present, at the time of a civil infraction, as a witness, in order to write a citation.  In our modern age, there is just too much potential for us to find ourselves in a society where every minor screw up results in us receiving a fine.  Tyranny is often good intentions mixed with efficiency.

My idiot daughter proceeded to post a public FB pic of herself and boyfriend, with him driving and mugging for the picture along a highway.  Busted!

Think of this (obviously theydo) as the equivalent of reviewing some CCTV footage and spotting someone smashing a window or, otherwise unnoticed, stealing from a vendor.  Only difference here is this is what USians call a "crime against society" in that nothing else happened (nothing was damaged, nor was anyone hurt or even inconvenienced).

But yeah, despite the article's headline, and given the actual police response (and lack of any mention in the article of any actual search) I'm guessing this was more of a public embarrassment and let-go with a warning.  Sort of a "You know you're a dumbass on multiple levels, right?"

Walker: A woman was arrested for holding an apple while driving. They even sent a police helicopter to track her down.

Every element of both of those statements is inaccurate. She wasn't arrested, she was summonsed to the magistrate's court having declined the FPN issued at the scene. She wasn't charged with holding an apple, she was charged with not being in full control of the vehicle (the reasonableness of that charge is obviously open to debate.) The police helicopter was tasked with taking an aerial photograph of the scene, not to track her down. Other than that, spot on...

Quadra Carriageways are the worse.  You're stuck in traffic because someone is trying to egress from the far left all willy-nilly.  Then, some ne're-do-well on a stallion cuts through the lanes shouting "Hey-all, hey-all! It vexes me to my very soul, it does.

Illegal in the whole of the UK, I believe.  https://www.gov.uk/using-mobile-phones-when-driving-the-law

The road appears to be a UK dual carriageway*, so he'd have to argue that he was out of the country at the time, which is fairly easy to verify.

*Unless it's a private road which looks very much like a dual carriageway, which is unlikely.  Not sure if you can use a mobile when driving on a private road.

I am not a law talking guy - but I believe in the UK, the police aren't interested if you drive under-age while drunk, masturbating and texting at the same time, as long as you do it on private land.

If you injure anyone while doing so, though, the court will find you just as criminally negligent as if you had been on a public road.
