One of the biggest hits so far this year(and arguably one of the more important as it relates to new IP) features a female protaganist.  2.6 million units sold and counting as of March.  It's almost like Gamergaters are nothing but a small group of man-babies who aren't representative of gamers as a whole.  Or all that concerned about ethics in video game journalism.

Not that I doubt there are whiny crybabies out there, but this may be another case of Sony / Ghostbusters remake overhyping to get a free marketing angle. Sure there are complainers about stupid shiat. But it's usually just a very few.

Ignore them.

Every time I play Mario Kart, I choose Daisy or Rosalina.  Ms. Pacman is a better game than Pacman.  Women's underwear is much more comfortable than men's underwear.

Wait a minute...

4chan taught me that graphics don't matter, and gameplay is what makes games great, until the main character is a woman and/or black.  Then suddenly, graphics are very important.

I find this curious.  Very curious.

Ignore the idiots, because they are a loud, but extreme minority. Ignore the stories about them because they are about ad clicks, not outrage. This whole thing becomes a non-issue.

The irony is that the main character is the only thing in that game which they got right.  And it still managed to piss someone off, lol.

The fun part is that nobody thought girl characters were a problem, ever, until the internet rustled everybody's jimmies in every direction.  I'm convinced that "EWWW, A GIRL CHARACTER"  roughly translates to "RARRGH ANITA MADE FUN OF OUR GAEMS".

I don't care if the main character is male or female.

Having said that: I read something about a female stormtrooper. Is she a Jango Fett clone with a Y-X chromosome transposition? Did they use a different source (a female) for a new batch of stormtroopers? Or are the people in the article just idiots and she is an imperial agent, but not actually a stormtrooper?

I'm more bothered by the fact that they're calling Battlefront IV Battlefront II.  There was already a Battlefront II, in 2005.  It was confusing enough when they released Battlefront III as Battlefront, but this is madness.

Warning: post contains nuance and therefore may not be suitable for the internet

If - and I stress if - there is a point here, it's that in the universe fluff (back before a bunch of stuff was relegated to Legends), the Empire was sexist as hell and generally didn't have women in positions of power.  I don't know if that fluff came across to the new canon or not.  If it did, then there's a valid point only insofar as the protagonist should have her gender justified, given the existing institutional sexism of the Empire.

It's also important to remember that protagonists by definition break the "norms", and people need to learn to farking deal with that fact (see also: Rey).  As a protagonist, even in a heavily-sexist Empire, it shouldn't be totally impossible for a female to end up in an elite command position.  I'm rather looking forward to see if/how it's justified.

Granted, this isn't the tack these hate-filled farksticks are taking, and they're being a bunch of, well, farksticks about it.  The protagonist's gender and position raises a question about integration with previously-described given circumstances in the Star Wars universe, and the question should ideally be answered in the game.  That's it.

I couldn't figure out what was going on, either. Curiously, someone linked to Encyclopedia Dramatica, and the article wasn't as horrible as I expected. It kinda explains it.

Clone Troopers fell out of favor around the time of the Battle of Yavin because of their rapid aging process and the expense of keeping the ranks full. Most Storm Troopers post Ep. IV are regular recruits, not clones

I believe that's the actual official canon explanation. I could be wrong but a brief google search seems to indicate that to be the case

Actually it is confirmed as canon in Star Wars: Rebels (which, I've been pretty lax in watching)

Rebellion era storm troopers aren't clone troopers. The cloning facilities on Kamino were destroyed duringbthe clone wars so they switched over to normal enlistment armies.

And don't forget that historical accuracy is of the utmost importance when determining whether women can be knights or just damsels and prostitutes, but entirely irrelevant when it comes to magic and dragons.

I am a quasi-starwars nerd, but not enough to know about the downside of cloned troopers and why they fell out of use.

I can understand the argument that they can't get as "immersed" into a character of specific gender.  I'm kind of the same way.  I spend far too much time playing video games, mostly RPGs.  I identify with my character, I get invested in them, and I have realized that it's sometimes more difficult for me to get invested in a male character (I am female).  I much prefer it when there is a choice, like Fallout, or Mass Effect, or Dragon Age.  I bought all three Witcher games as a set, and started playing Witcher 3 first.  I wasn't thrilled with the camera or the controls.  It actually made me a bit nauseous. I really think though, that the reason I didn't soldier on through and learn to deal with it is because the character itself didn't appeal to me.  I've heard it's a heck of a story, so I may, at some point, go back and play it just so that I can experience that.  I'm not holding my breath though.  I have played over 2200 hours of Fallout 4, finished the game 8 or 9 times (with dozens of restarts that went bad due to my overuse of mods) but I have never completed a single play through as a male character.  I've started a male four or five times, but never finished one.

Having said all of that, I have seen the story modes on shooter games (my son plays them) and they don't seem to be very long (though I can't speak for this game as I've not seen it).  I could probably get through 10 or 20 hours playing as any type of character, even a hutt.  And also, I've recently completed Mass Effect: Andromeda as Sara, but I have heard that the voice actor for Scott is better, so I will probably do my next play through as him to see how he voices the lines.  Funny, now that I think about it, the female voice actor seems to have been better in all of the games I mentioned above.  Perhaps that's what draws me in or at least plays a big role in my enjoyment of the character.

What I can't understand is the vitriol that spews from them people screaming about the gender of the story mode character.  They do seem to be a bunch of little boys worrying about the cooties of little girls.

Yes but the Knight is more maneuverable and versatile, and is represented by a horse!  And what's that saying, hung like a horse?  Only MEN can be described in such a way, so obviously it is saying that woman can move in many directions but can't get over obstacles, while men, even when limited, can still get past obstacles and succeed!

/I really need to stop watching MRA videos for laughs.
