Funny how this is not why Trump signed an ExecOrd to make it legal to shoot hibernating animals, but it is the only possible reason that makes even the slightest shred of sense (and it really doesn't anyway.).  Shoot them while they are asleep and they won't wander into traffic.  Problem solved.

Whenever I think of Reagan and Freeways, I always think of these posters that were pasted all around Los Angeles in the 80's. Kinda unsettling when you're a kid and these things are always under the dark overpasses and on-ramps.

FTA:  "Two vehicles struck and killed the bear Thursday morning on the southbound Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in Porter Ranch."

This is my neighborhood. There is no southbound 118. It's an east-west freeway.

This.  Freeways, (interstates, anyway) have even numbers traveling east-west and odd numbers north-south.

Author must've been sucking on the fumes from the natural gas leak a little too long and forgot which way the freeway goes

Sadly, the bear was only trying to impress Jody Foster when the incident occurred.

Except the 101 through the valley. It makes a cut east to west, so in LA the signs are N/S in SFV they are E/W and then switch back in Ventura county.

Neither the 118 nor the 101 are interstates, though.

I'd rather have a live bear than a dead Reagan.
Or any Reagan.

/No, I don't know what that means, but I still dislike that shriveled old pr***k.

They're talking about putting one in over the 101 in Agoura Hills. If that works, maybe they'll do one where the 118 cuts through the Santa Susana Mountains.

Interstates work that way.  US highways work that way as well.  Interstates don't use banners like "Loop" or "Spur", however, if the interstate has 3 digits, the parent route is the last two digits, and if the first digit is even, it's a loop that returns to the parent, and if it's odd, it's a spur that doesn't return to it's parent.

California state highways also follow the even/odd convention that US and Interstate highways do.  But not every state does this.  Oklahoma, for example, started numbering highways in the order in which they were built, then tried to retcon a system to it, then gave that up, and has no rhyme or reason for most of it's numbering, and some cases, the same number refers to two different highways in very different parts of the state, with OK 20 being signed in all four directions (since it's roughly L shaped) and OK 351 being signed eastbound going from Tulsa to Muskogee and northbound from Muskogee to Tulsa (it runs diagonally).  And then there's Missouri's supplemental state highways, which get letters, and thus aren't even or odd, but if it's the same letter twice, then it's a loop or spur of the parent route (of just a single letter).

It does that again in Washington State on the Olympic Peninsula.  With the bonus fark-you sauce of it paralleling itself.  Also amusing:  rare example of a parentless three-digit US highway.  For it to work with the existing numbering scheme, it should be US 99...
