Ug these movies are terrible, my wife likes them because of the Rock so I had to sit through it and I just need to know, how can a supposedly car movie know so little about cars?

2017-04-18 08:12:55 AM
Probably in much the same way that a person who goes out of his way to be the first conservative voice in a political thread knows nothing about politics or even reality.

There is a strong contingent of people that love them seriously, sure. But a bug chunk of the newer crowds are people like me, people that watch them realizing how deeply dumb they are, but enjoy seeing them get more and more ridiculous as they go. As far as action movies, it's the only series that consistently raises the bar with the insane things they come up with. It's hilarious.

Also, Ep VIII had a 3 week gap between US release and the release in China. So, yeah, doesn't really compare.

Maybe it is just a reflection of how crappy the competition is?

$532 million worldwide. Of that, $433.2 million was outside the US. It'll do pedestrian numbers in the US like the previous ones because it's not a movie made for an American audience. It'll kill overseas, though.

Ok nerds, listen up.  Many people watch SW movies for the exact same reason.  They don't care about the back story, or the canon, or anything like that.  They just want 2+ hours of pure escapism.  That is all.

I dunno, pretty much every Jason Statham franchise (e.g., Transporter, Crank) seems to fit that bill pretty nicely too. Though to be fair, he's in the FF franchise now too so I guess that statement is kind of redundant.

7 was so over the top ridiculous i couldnt help but think it was awesome. So bad its great. At least I think it was 7, I get them mixed up (the one where they drove a super car out of a high rise in Dubai). Ridiculous.

I'm a car guy, but I never got into them. I like my cars RWD with big displacement, and the firat movie didn't do much to cater to my tastes. More power to anyone who likes these flicks though.

Was Star Wars somehow anything else besides shiat blowing up and spaceships going vroom zoom ? At least the Furious movies aren't so full of themselves.

2017-04-18 08:47:21 AM
So seeing spaceships go "whoosh" and shiat explode is more highbrow?

Sorry to tell you this, but Star Wars movies are just as frickin' dumb.  In fact, they are more stupid than Tokyo Drift, and Tokyo Drift was downright insulting.

You liked that shiat because you saw it when you were a kid and it kindled your imagination.  If you like at the movies with a critical eye, they all fall completely apart.  Bad directing, bad writing, bad acting, bad everything except for special effects.

They're cartoons. People like cartoons. Hell, most of the special effects in action movies are CGI now so they literally are animation. The only question now is whether you want your animated film simulating the look of a cel cartoon or simulating the look of a live action film.

The crazy started with Fast 5 and just got more ridiculous from there. If you can't enjoy Mini Coopers hauling a giant safe through Rio, or a car jumping out of a Dubai tower, then I feel bad for ya.

For me it's an investment in my son. The little guy wanted to see the original Fast and Furious a long time ago so we sort of grew up watching them together.  Fast 7 was heartbreaking for him because of Paul Walker's death.  Fast 8 intrigues him because of whole Dom is now evil aspect.  Over the years, it's become somewhat of a tradition that my son and I enjoy together.  Are we stupid for enjoying them?  Yeah, probably.

It promises you car stunts, explosions, and at least one fist fight. Unlike many other movies it delivers exactly what it promises.

Let's be honest here, there has never been a good Fast and the Furious movie, there has never been a good Star Wars movie.

If you want to engage film as an art form, The Triangle Meets the Square is being released in forty-seven coffee houses this week, and expanding to bookstores sometime over the next four to eight weeks.

In the film, a triangle seeks out true love after the brutal genocide of her people, and a fight for survival in the brutal wilderness becomes the relationship of a lifetime.  The film goes on to expore everything from income inequality, to the election being stolen from Hillary, to Donald Trump not being MY president.

If you're tired of movies being the lowest common denominator, and want to see a REAL film, then look no further than this gripping tale of two polygons, forming an equilateral relationship.

Bullshiat.  The last one did 350 domestic and the two before that both made 200 plus.  That's not pedestrian.

In that same vein, there has never been a good Marvel film, either.

...and part of the fun of these particular movies is the amount that they do without CG.  (I'm not arguing that they don't use it at all, because please.)  Like in the last one when they decided that the easiest way to do the parachuting cars scene was to actually kick cars out the back of the plane....or in the earlier one when they decided do drag a (mock) giant safe around city streets.

Yeah...they're stupid, stupid movies that happen to be a lot of fun.  Honestly, I think that this one was also the xXx: Return of Xander Cage and new Transporter that we deserved.

You sound terminally butt hurt, Subby. Have a drink or something. The success of a Fast and Furious movie has no bearing on your life. It's entertainment. People enjoy entertainment. Don't worry, your French-subtitled schlock will still be produced.

This. A few weeks ago, folks were complaining about how it had been 40 years since it lost the Best Picture Oscar. I love the original trilogy, but have you ever watched A New Hope just as a movie? The special effects and the score are really the only thing the movie had going for it. The dialogue was atrocious, the performances by the young cast were over the top, and Alec Guinness seemed bored in a lot of his scenes. Was it entertaining? Definitely. Is it great filmmaking? Apart from the effects team's and John Williams' contribution, not really.

It is just action porn.  Instead of riding souped up women, you have them driving souped up cars.  Instead of doing the reverse monkey tug while suspended from a sex rig, you have a car versus a submarine.  Instead of impossibly enjoyed money shots, you have explosions.  The only aspect I wish neither has in common is the need to zoom in close to see how pistons work.

2017-04-18 10:07:22 AM
... And there was a time in this country, a long time ago, when reading wasn't just for f*gs and neither was writing. People wrote books and movies, movies that had stories so you cared whose ass it was and why it was farting, and I believe that time can come again!

Jason Statham was my favorite part of this movie and considering The Rock all but rode a torpedo that's saying something.

Superheroes with cars. Just think of it that way. Like a Hasbro cartoon from the 80s.

It really changes the experience.

They're finally making MEG? They were talking about that back when Patrick Stewart was attached. I don't know, there's been so many shark movies on the sci-fi channel.

Yes, they finished principal photography before Christmas.  It was going to hit theatres in March of 2018, but the poop is that Warner Bros. is so pleased with it, that they decided to make it big a summer release instead.

The story in the film sounds as if it's a conglomeration of the plotlines of both MEG, and The Trench, with Chinese characters taking the place of the Japanese ones.  Its major financial backers are Chinese.

Yeah.  Not sure what Han's nationality was supposed to be, although I suspect the character was Chinese, given his name.  But, I'm surprised we haven't had other significant Chinese characters in the F&F films.

The scoop is that that sets for MEG are quite impressive.  Grant Major is the production designer ... he was the production designer on the LOTR trilogy, Jackson's King Kong, and X-Men Apocalypse.

Just so the shark is animatronic and not CGI.

2017-04-18 02:10:21 PM
The beauty of this is that F&F fans can now claim that the F&F franchise is better than Star Wars. This is great because insufferable Star Wars fans kept using that benchmark for decades as to why Star Wars was the greatest film franchise in history.

I'm suspecting CGI, since there's an Instagram photo of Jessica Mcnamee in the makeup trailer, next to a computer screen with a CGI meg on it.  CGI shark looked quite good in The Shallows.  You'd have to have one gigantic animatronic thingee for a Meg.

How about everyone like what they like? I mean, unless someone is forcing you to watch something, wtf is wrong with just letting people enjoy shiat?
