It's going to be what we see at the first drive-in movie event we go to this year.

Wonder Woman, Cars 3 and possibly Despicable M2 3 are the others.

Should be good fun!

you know, I actually have 2 coworkers who want this stuff. One (who's a big DC fan) keeps ranting about how Marvel's too "light" and needs to be "darker" him and the other guy were going into Civil war going "if at least 2 heroes don't die it's a waste and Disney has no balls."  Which is just the dumbest thing to think going into a movie like that.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL 2. is very fun. Takes the EMPIRE "split up your characters" strategy. Drax is a hoot. Baby Groot steals the show

I suspected they would do that.

Talking movies with those 2 coworkers is almost impossible.  the DC fan, also thinks The Last Jedi should have as little rey/kylo as possible and have Luke going dark.

/DC guy also mistook the cast order on the IMDB page as amount of screen time
//thought the rumored Tom Hardy cameo as a storm trooper was going to be a "Epic part" since he was 2nd on the list on IMDB

That's another thing about GotG Vol 2. Supposedly it has just as vivid a color palette as the trailers promise, so it is also the complete visual opposite of BvS: The Dawn of Desaturation.

you hit the nail on the head. They go into a tizzy and frothing at the mouth if I so much as insinuate the dark knight stuff isn't some of the best cinema of all time.

The funniest bit is the DC fanboy loves Disneyworld, but at the same time hates Disney because he keeps claiming that when DC movies come out with bad reviews that Marvel/Disney are in some conspiracy and paying off the reviewers to say DC stuff is bad.

This is where I don't understand why people don't want both.  Both can be done with quality.  Nolan gave us dark, broody superhero films that took themselves very seriously.  The MCU gives us lighter, more popcorn film fun.  Both are done with a high degree of competence and quality.

DC has shown us how both can be done horribly.  (BvS and Green Lantern, anyone?)  It's not about which is better, it's about seeing both done well.

One thing I find is that the dark and gritty is easier to fark up.

Even with a weak plot, a good amount of humour, actions, and general fun can make movie entertaining. If your plot of your dark and gritty movie is weak the film will probably suck because you don't have those things to fall back on.

2017-04-18 03:47:27 PM
I'll also point out that one of the best "grim and gritty" superhero pics was Logan, which is a farking Fox property, and those guys churned out Wolverine Origins. And they did farking Deadpool. Go figure.

It certainly takes a more practiced hand, and a lot of careful planning to pull off.  If you're going to go dark with comic material, you're taking on a lot of work.  Much like making a light, fluffy gangster movie, or any other time you break the commonly held mood.

It's very easy to screw up dark comic material.  You're giving up "fun" for serious and quality drama.  It's a trade off.  While they got a lot of shiat, I liked "V" and "Watchmen", as well as the three Nolan Batman films.  They did it well.

Yeah but that just shows how much DC fails.  They TRIED dark and brooding in Batman Vs. Superman which was apparently filmed during Gotham/Metroplis' little-known Monsoon season.   And the result was a confusing mess and a thudding bore (batman fought superman but you never really felt there was ANY reason for it other than the plot demanded  it)

Marvel then did "dark and brooding" in Logan and I came away feeling like I'd watched one of the best movies of the year....and I had seen Moonlight, La-La land, Hacksaw Ridge and Hell or High-water withing the last month and a half of seeing it.

DC tried "Light, airy and self referential" but lost thier minds and/or balls in Post production and came away with the glommy mess of Suicide Squad that wasted Will Smith' best performance in a long time

Marvel says "Hold my beer and watch this" and riffs off Dr. Stange, Spiderman AND Gaurdians II

Yah, if you think about the way many movies are headed (I'm looking at Bats v Supes), the 'gritty' super hero was the theme. I don't think there has been a fun, hilarious space opera before.

I totally agree, but it's important to remember that the preview screening of Fant4stic and BvS where mostly not critics but general audience.  A lot of these reactions are from critics.  Also FWIW F4 and BvS tended to have a "Greatest movie evar" reaction instead of the Civil War reactions which specifically hit that "X character is great" or "X scene is great"

Review Embargo lifts next week so we'll get to read them then of course.

To be fair though, Logan worked because it really wasn't a superhero movie. It was a western that happened to have some mutants in it.

I actually appreciate both approaches. The super fun of Marvel as well as the grimdark of DC. Don't see why I have to pick one or the other, or why either franchise has to try to be like the other. The only one they could have done that with would have been Suicide Squad, but they farked that one up from the getgo.

Oh no, if it was an Armond White review, you'd have to start by mentioning that Chris Pratt is Starlord AGAIN then proceed to write only about public policy and ramble on the state of cinema. At no point can you give any proof you actually saw some of the film, just rant about the idea of the film.
